We stayed for 11nights in the hotel istra , yes it is not a plush hotel but it is very nice, lovely and clean, nice and pleasant staff, also very helpful. There wasn't much in the way of entertainment but it looked like the staff were gearing up for more of this both in the hotel and the water sports, we were quite happy with this as it was less hectic and we had gone for a bit of a relaxing break. The food was good
, something for everyone, only thing missing from breakfast was baked beans and sometimes it wasn't always very hot. The old town which was a short boat ride away was lovely a great place and very pretty, lots of little cafes and restaurants where you wouldn't expect them to be, it was great just coming across them, good to sit and have a coffee or glass of wine and watch the world go by. Great ice cream too. A short walk across to another island and in the middle was a restaurant which was lovely to sit and have lunch looking out over the sea, we had lunch twice and both times was really very nice and great people serving. Worth going to croatia.

Room Tip: Request a sea and pool view, well worth the bit extra.

What a beautiful place Rovinj is, unspoilt as yet and a pleasure to explore. When our ferry arrived to take us to the island on which the hotel was located it was quite exciting as it was more like a motor launch than your bog standard "ferry".

On approaching the hotel the staff were there to take our luggage and show us where to go and the hotel reception had all our keys and details ready for us. They told the whole group what to expect which saved a lot of time instead of telling everyone individually. Our room was ready for occupation and what a room it was. Beautifully clean and well appointed directly above the spa with magnificent sea views.

I think previous reviewers must have poor eyesight as there were plenty of eggs, fried, boiled or scrambled and bacon for breakfast and chef made omelettes to order . Plenty of alternatives in the form of fresh fruit ham eggs and strangely sprouts and mixed veg ! Each to their own hey.

Evening meal had plenty of choice and of course the free wine beer and soft drinks was a pleasant addition. The deserts were plenty.

The free ferry was available every hour to take you to Rovinj and back a most pleasant part of the holiday. The trip to Venice was great but the weather wasn't therefore the ferry back was very rough and Venice is sinking. Too many cruise passenger but well worth a visit.

The staff were lovely and very helpful, always pleasant.

The entertainment was almost none existent however and a bit disappointing therefore cos the telly isn't very good unless you pay.

Overall it was an extremely pleasant holiday and we would definitely book again.

Room Tip: Always pay for a sea view otherwise you might be put in the Annexe and that wouldn't be good. R...

just returned from a weeks break in june 2013 at hotel Istra Rovinj, having read some of the negative reviews, i wonder whether my wife and I stayed at the same place. A great start to the holiday with a pleasant ferry crossing to the island, the 15 minute journey presented great views of the old town, the coast line and other lovely looking hotels, followed by the views of the hotel Istra and adjacent restaurant and bar.
Hotel Istra on arrival we were greeted with a complimentary drink during check in, which was very brisk, we were given our room key restaurant pass, and ferry pass which is to be shown to the ferry staff when leaving for the main land, the reception area was a very pleasant place very bright and 70's style furniture,
we had a room on the third floor over looking the spa, which was pleasant enough for the amount of time spent in the room and on the balcony, the room itself was plenty big enough for two, with plenty of wardrobe space, the bathroom had a great powerful shower, and its own hair dryer the towels and room were cleaned daily to a very high standard.
the pools and terrace area had plenty of sun beds and plenty of room around you,the sun beds were surprisingly very comfortable resulting in several day time naps. there is the option to hire towels at the pool, scattered around the rocky beach area were other beds, the walk around the island and adjacent island was not to demanding and would take 40 - 45 minutes to walk around both there were plenty of benches to sit on to take in the sea views, there was a play area for children set just away from the hotel near to a bar on the main island and a further bar on the adjacent island having a had a pizza each we found one between us would have been enough and the food was a reasonable price, the hotel restaurant was buffet style for both breakfast and evening meal, breakfast there was bacon sausage etc cereals, toast and the usual continental style, on both sittings there was plenty of choice, the evening meal there were plenty of quality meats and fish and pasta, and desserts with your evening meal there was both red and white wines and beer included we found that by going for our evening meal about 7.45 - 8 there were plenty of tables free and we missed the big 6.30 rush
With the ferry leaving the island on the hour and starting its return on the half hour, we would go out for lunch at 1 , eat on the main land and still be back by 3 or 4 p.m giving us 3-4 more hours around the pool.
The main land was very pleasant place to visit, having taken up the offer of a free tour of the old town by Igor from the animation team, when we returned alone we were happy we could find our way round the cobbled streets, the prices of food and drink in the town were very reasonable, the return ferry from the main land to hotel Istra from 22.30 hrs is shared with the ferry for hotel katarina. so there is no need to panic if you don't see the Rubinum, .the last ferry to the island is half past midnight
the coast line is wonderful place to go taking you through the nature reserve and along the coast, the easy way to see it is on a pedal cycle, and at 40 kunas each approx £10 for 2 good bikes for four hours its money well spent, and nice to stop off at the local coastal bars. the ride itself takes you through a rocky area where you can watch people climbing the rock faces you then go onto a gravel path. nobody should be put off by age a lovely couple we met in their 70's also took in a bike ride, the age range of persons taking part in bike rides ranged from families with young children with child seats on the bikes to holiday makers in there 70's
this being our first visit to Croatia and having read the negative reviews we were not sure what to expect , What i can say is everyone has different expectations and experiences, I can honestly say our experience was fantastic, the staff at the Istra were very pleasant and helpful the Thomson rep was one of a kind helpful , funny and passionate about his role and Croatia, the age range of holiday makers was from young families to the older visitor, we fell in the middle age bracket and found all very pleasant and friendly as such we are looking to return in 2014

Room Tip: pay the extra for a sea view if you want to waste your money, a room over the spa was pleasant, onc...

Better than we were expecting, rooms of a good size maintained well and very clean. Food was good especially in the evening and to our surprise wine and beer on tap. Breakfasts were a little disappointing as there was no English cooked breakfast but plenty of cereals, pastries etc. Location was amazing set on its own island, very clean, lots of birds and lizards! Not really any evening entertainment but rovinj only a short boat journey away with boats every hour. Staff couldn't have been more helpful, and our Thompson rep was fantastic advising us on places to eat in the town, trips and local attractions to visit. Whilst staying at the hotel we visited porec and lake bled which was truly beautiful (worth the long coach ride). Food and drink really inexpensive with a cocktail around £4.50 and a large bottle of Croatian beer £2.20 one day we bought 2 sandwiches 2 cakes and a drink for £4.50 at a local bakery. We said we really would go back to this hotel as we had such a great holiday and definitely value for money.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a sea view, we met some people who had a room on the top floor and had trouble wit...

we booked via thomson and did half board, the island the hotel is on is amazing and it is great getting to and from the island on the boat. this is on the hour from the island and on the half hour from the main land. i even saw dolphins on one occaison.
the hotel is clean, practical and does what it says. the food at b/fast and dinner is good, there is a good choice and plenty of it. lots to drink as well if you want it. overall impressed with the food and drink side. the decor reminds me of bauhaus style in a good way. we took a seaview room and this was a good choice. there are no tea and coffee facilities in the rooms which was a bit disappointing. the pools outside are good and clean, plenty of loungers avail. public areas are clean, bright and welcoming. this for us was an amazing location with all we needed for a great holiday.. i would recommend a sea view room and take your own beach towels, they charge for them per towel.... not a lot but enough for me to take a couple..
we went at the beginning of the season, so i assume this will be a very busy place to stay in high season.
i would stay here again... Istria and rovinj are amazing.

Room Tip: take your own beach towels, for the pool and beach.. and get a sea view it is worth it.

This was my first trip to Croatia, so I really don't have anything to compare it to; I don't know whether this place was typical of the area or not. So I'll just list my thoughts, and if you're a regular visitor, feel free to compare them with what you know.
THE GOOD: Grounds were IMMACULATE. Beautiful pools, stunning views, nice access to the water.
Great dinner buffet-- probably one of the best I've had in Europe. Calamari, gnocchi, veal chops, wine, a billion desserts-- yummy. The breakfast buffet wasn't as great, but still a step above the cereal-and-OJ you get at a lot of places.
Other restaurants seemed reasonably priced-- I ate only ate at the pizza joint (REALLY good), but they all had attractive menus.
Free ferry service to Rovinj.
On-site currency exchange.
THE OK: Ferries only run once per hour, so you're at the mercy of a schedule-- depending on what kind of travel you like, that can be a bit annoying.
Rooms were VERY small--even by European standards (but again, not sure what the competition offered).
Decor was a bit garish.
THE BAD: PAPER thin walls. Make friends with your neighbors, because you're going to hear every conversation, sneeze, toilet flush,....um, other activity....so yeah. Just be aware of that.
No laundromat services on site.
The front desk staff was CRABBY. Even during routine things like check-out, they had this attitude like we were bothering them. If you ask for something they don't do (we asked about possible day-trips to Venice), be prepared to be looked at like you're an idiot.
I won't say DON'T stay here, because it has some pretty good things going for it, and I don't know-- this just may be the norm in Rovinj. Just be prepared for some things that may be different than what you're used to!

Croatia has always been a favourite of ours but we'd never stayed in Istria before. We'd visited Rovinj on a day trip during a previous holiday and decided it would be a great destination for a family holiday to celebrate our retirement. We travelled as a party of 8 viz Grandparents, our two daughters & partners together with our 2 grandchildren [aged 10 & 3]. We chose the Hotel Istra and weren't disappointed.
Manchester to Pula takes just over two hours with a 45 minute transfer to Rovinj before embarking on the hotel's boat, the Rubinum, for the 10 minute or so crossing to the Istra on St Andrew's Island. The hotel is modern and is no architectural gem but we found it to be clean, comfortable and spacious. Our rooms gave peaceful sleep quality and had great sea views, one faced Rovinj, the others faced the smaller Maskin Island connected to St Andrew's Island by a short causeway.
The guests included several nationalities: with similar numbers of British; German/Austrian; Italian, French; with some American and Japanese groups. This cosmopolitan mix didn't seem to have problems in the dining room - food was plentiful with a good choice, free drinks were available at dinner, not top quality but very palatable - we heard no complaints. The price of drinks and snacks at the bar were very good - much cheaper than one would find in the UK.
The facilities at the hotel were very good; plentiful sunbeds; 5 pools: 4 outdoor & 1 indoor; a good gym and a very good Wellness Centre. Our grandchildren loved the indoor play area and were very enthusiastic with the facilities at the outdoor equivalent.
Walking around both Islands took less than an hour even if you were just strolling; the flora & fauna were well managed and there were plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the views. Many people took to the rocks on Maskin to sunbathe.
We had read complaints in previous reviews about the hotel concerning the attitude of some of the staff - we found none of this and didn't observe any either. All staff were friendly and welcoming.
If there was one thing that could be improved it was the evening entertainment, or lack of it - with no alternative on the island we think this is a definite area for improvement.
We wouldn't want to end on a negative note so we would like to unreservedly recommend the Hotel Istra and Rovinj to would-be holiday makers - we enjoyed it - we hope you will.
