Hotel Istra is fab! The grounds and hotel are kept really clean and tidy. The room was bright and the sea view was lovely. Checking in was very quick and efficient. We had a problem with our safe so phoned reception and someone came within half an hour and sorted it out. The boat crossing to/from Rovinj is lovely but can get very busy at times. Lots of people from Rovinj come over to the island for sunbathing etc but there are so many places around the island that you don't have to be all squashed up by the main beach areas. The pools were mainly used by families so we found good areas around the island...where it is still possible to get into the sea. Snorkelling around the island is brilliant!
There are tennis, volleyball and basketball courts...the green tennis court was the best as it was out of the way and nobody could watch!! The entertainment in the evenings was varied and very amusing! Some of the reviews on here complain about the food but it really isn't that bad!! There is so much choice...lots of things the same each night, like the salads etc but also a variety of meats and veggie things each night! If you can't find anything you like, you're too fussy! Big plus: Free wine/beer included with the meal each night!
Rovinj is also lovely...the Bell tower has amazing views from the top but you take your life into your hands getting up there....wooden steps that are a bit of a health and safety risk! We hired a bike one day too and rode along the cycle path through the park, along the coast and you had good views of the hotel from over the water! We booked through Thomson.....flights were fine, transfers were well organised, rep in the hotel was very helpful and friendly, paid for a sea view room and got one so no problems with Thomson at all!
All in all....a brilliant hotel and holiday!

I stayed at the hotel istra during July 2012 with my husband and children aged 11 and 14. We had a wonderful time. I was a bit concerned on arrival , as there had been a storm and the ferry crossing to the island was quite rough. Generally the crossing was fine but it is something to be aware of if you are not a good sailor. Our rooms were spotlessly clean and bedding and towels were changed frequently. There were many free activities during the day run by a competent and cheery team which we did together as a family and really enjoyed. Rovinj is beautiful and the views from the hotel are lovely with some beautiful sunsets and plenty of boats to watch. Our only disappointment with the hotel was the main restaurant which we found a bit canteenlike and were not impressed overall with the quality of food - although it was adequate. There was a really good pizza restaurant which opened at lunchtime though and the a la carte restaurant was excellent.. Pools were good but be warned beaches are stoney.

We travelled as a family of 5 in 2 rooms. Apart from 2 things the Hotel/Holiday was great. Firstly with 3 kids on the booking (12,13,14) i expect our 2 rooms to be adjacent esp when booked 9 months ago. Also we booked 2 sea view rooms which had been originally allocated 333 & 336 but 333 was crossed out & 380 written in. Lara Poropat the Reception Mgr was totally disinterested and waved me away. Very unprofessional. The 3rd bed was a chair bed & really uncomfortable. Throughout the stay we heard English people complaining to the Thomson Rep about Sea View.
Secondly we booked the Thomson Day Trip to Venice......& 300 people were abandoned in Porec. (Going to do a separator review for this) Unusual i know but I would not recommend this trip with Thomson under any circumstances. We were given 50% refund.
The rest of the hotel was fab.
Pool - Need to be up at 7am to bag a parasol round the pool. Some saddos were getting the towels out at night. Water nice. Very clean. Towels are exchanged for £2 per day. 2 Pool Bars with quick service.
Food - Could imagine getting a bit fed up after a week but always hot, tasty & freshly cooked. The kids didn't moan anyway. As much to drink as you want. The hotel does not do lunch unless it is bought at one of the Hotel bars/cafes on the Island.
Beach - No crowding problem always room for 1 more. Our kids did Wind Surfing lessons but as it is sometimes too windy don't buy a full course book day to day or you'll lose money.
Entertainment - TBH didn't go as too busy on bar terrace. Looked empty most nights.
Wi Fi - Whole world was on their PC's & I Pads in lounge area.
All in all apart from the Room debacle in first 5 mins the Hotel was great. Staff very nice & friendly.
Would not book this hotel with Thomson.....get a Pula flight and book hotel on a booking site. Thomson were poor in our opinion.

Room Tip: Book a Sea View room which overlooks the Pool side & not the 'front" as this overlooks...

Idyllic location reached by a 15 minute boat trip from Rovinj. Quiet and peaceful. Beautiful seaview pre booked with Thomsons, good food with a wide choice. Lovely room with a very comfortable bed and pillow which is a first for me on a package holiday. Perfect location for couples and families with young children. I suspect teenagers would get a little bored unless they are into watersports and are not bothered about night life. If you want sandy beaches Croatia is not for you as the beaches are rocky or shingle.

We spent a week at Hotel Istra returning a few days ago. If you are having any doubts about booking a holiday here or have done so and worried - please don't ! You will have a fantastic time - only of course if you want to! There have been a few negative reviews which seem a bit harsh - I suspect some people go through life disappointed.
We travelled with Thomson - no complaints. Booking in at the hotel took less than 2 minutes - tell them your name, hand over passports, receive an envelope with yours keys and other helpful details and find your room! Couldn't be easier. We booked 1 sea view room and 3 doubles (non sea view) - we had views over the tennis courts which frankly were fine. The sea view room was great but to be honest don't let the absence of a sea view room stress you - it's not a holiday breaker. The rooms are all modern, clean and do what they say on the tin - have beds to sleep in!
Others have mentioned the initial wait for the ferry when you arrive. They leave from the "dolphin" jetty on the quarter to the hour. If you view it as being part of your holiday, relax, enjoy the views you'll be fine. If you are a control freak and worried if you'll be abandoned on the jetty and never get to your hotel book yourself in to the "Priory" for a week of therapy! Once on the ferry you will soon relax and drift quickly into holiday mode. I found the journey to the hotel really served to start the holiday. You will know what I mean!
So onto the food! Yes they really do serve boiled veg and brussel sprouts for breakfast, but they also serve fruit, omelettes, bacon, and all the normal things you'd expect. Would it surprise you that people from other countries also visit the Hotel Istra? Would you not expect the hotel to ensure their dietary requirements were also catered for? Remember people from other countries might look strangely at what we eat! There is plenty of choice and fresh. No it's not a la carte but for what you pay it's good value! A nice touch is the complimentary beer and wine with dinner! Very nice! We tried to make a dash with full glasses after our meal and were told off - naughty!!
In summary - you'll have a great time. I have stayed in some of the best hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur), this is a good hotel trying its best and doing a good job. There are a few minor points they could improve, more staff serving drinks, but the location, scenery, snorkelling, swimming, and just relaxing are hard to beat! If you go have a great time - I wish I was still there!

Hotel Istra is in a wonderful location on its own island with excellent facilities.
However once the high season arrives it can be overrun by day trippers (both tourists and locals)
Do much so that the small beaches and secluded swimming spots are very over crowded.
Contrary to previous reviews we found the food plentiful varied and well cooked
Although sometimes a little unusual (sprouts &steamed veg at breakfast )
Although this maybe because of the large number of Russian guests.
The hotel was clean & well maintained, the rooms well appointed and modern.
The staff always efficient and polite.

Have just arrived back today and can honestly say it was a perfect holiday from start to finish. We arrived from Birmingham in just 2hrs 20mins, and the heat hit is as we stepped off the plane. Our luggage appeared in no time and we were shown to our coach. On arrival at Rovinj we were unloaded by the harbour and told where the nearest cafe and toilets were, literally just in front of us, and we waited for about 20 mins for the free ferry, our cases were loaded on for us and we relaxed on the short boat trip. When we arrived at Red Island our cases were unloaded and taken to reception for us, whilst we were left to check in. A few minutes later we took our cases up to our room (239) which had a beautiful view of the swimming pools and the sea, we were very impressed at the cleanliness of the room as was the rest of the hotel. The room was a decent size and beds were very comfortable, there was plenty of wardrobe space and shelving and also a free safe which was very useful. The bathroom was a decent size with a bath and shower which was very powerful and again was very clean. The air conditioning was a godsend as it was extremely hot both day and night, although there was a slight breeze which helped to make it more bearable, the balcony had a couple of chairs and a table and was quite pleasant to sit out on as you were not overlooked by other peoples balconies, there was also a blind over the balcony if you wanted more shade. The hotel was very spacious and airy with modern furnishings.
Food at both breakfast and evening meal was very good, plenty of choice and very nicely cooked and laid out. There was always plenty of fresh fruits and salads, admittedly there were some strange things served for breakfast like sprouts, chicken, chips etc. but there were people eating them. At both meals there was a vast choice and we found the food to be very good. We never had to queue to get a table, incidentally we aways used the dining room on the left. There was free wine and beer with the evening meal which was self service.
Red Island is very beautiful and whilst the pool and surrounding areas were quite busy, you only had to walk a little further round the island to find a quiet spot. It was very relaxing to sit and listen to the constant sound of crickets and the waves lapping around the rocks. We were a little worried that we might feel 'trapped' on an island but this was far from the case. We did venture into Rovinj which was again very beautiful, full of character, with lots of little cobbled streets, plenty of places to eat and drink and lots of little shops, also a doctors and pharmacy which was useful. We also went on two trips one to Motovun
and the other one to Opatja and Kastav, the latter being the one we enjoyed the most, although Motovun was enjoyable, very quaint, we got to sample the olive oils, wines, brandy licquers, cheeses and hams.
It was nice to get back to 'our island' at the end of the day. The evening entertainment left a little to be desired but was greatly surpassed by the amazing sight of the sunset, with a cocktail in your hand it was the perfect end to the day. We have only just got back and are already missing it, I think that says it all. Just waiting to book again for next year, but hopefully before they change to euros in July.

Room Tip: A sea view is a must.
