A very good meal was marred by the cold attitude of our waitress...who knew that not being fluent in German would be a problem in Croatia. Our attempts at Italian (we were lead to believe that Italian was acceptable in Istria) were met with a sour face. We observed a difference in congeniality with the German guests, who were at every other table. On the other hand, a waiter, who shared some of the table services was very friendly and informative about local wines.
The food was delicious. We had for a first course of Istrian gnocchi which was exceptionally tasty (with seasoned slow roasted beef, like a beef stroganoff sauce). The second courses of grilled squid and fried sole were seasoned to perfection. Unfortunately, our not-so- friendly waitress never delivered our espresso. But the professional waiter offset the lack of coffee with a gratis Rakija.
