My wife and I heard about this restaurant in gorgeous Rovinj/Rovigno from the owner of Valle Losco from Volosko near Opatija. This place is a nice small establishment that offers mainly fish and seafood. The service is nice and attentive, FULLY fluent in Italian and Croatian. Bus boys should be a bit less rough around the edges, but our waiter was great. We had baccala mantecato a bianco, gamberetti di forno and some gratinated scallops. Baccala could be smoother in taste and texture, we have seen bigger scallops but gamberetti were excellent. Our main course was a San Pierro fish grilled to perfection. Accompanying greens with boiled potatoes should be less powerful (cut down on pre-made MSG-rich seasoning). We finished our meal with a selection of their desserts oh which milefoglie and chocolate cake were the best. For drinks we started with two glasses of sparkling wine and continued with local Malvasia Grotto. Finally, the house offered a shot of local sweet liquor called "biska". We would visit this lace again, but not go out of our way to do so.

We ate here 3 times during a recent stay in Rovinj (2 dinners and 1 lunch) and enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much. We chose to eat inside each time, as the outside area looked a bit "touristy" and sterile and inside was the place where the locals (mainly Italians or Croatian/Italians, I would guess) congregated. The fish and shellfish were excellent, as were the pasta dishes. Desserts were good too, especially the chocolate cake, panna cotta and apple strudel (no, we're not pigs - well, only slightly - they do a tasting plate of assorted desserts if you can't decide which to have).
We tried "quality" wine and the house, which comes literally on tap, and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the latter (red and white).
The staff were very friendly and spoke good enough English (better than our "restaurant Italian", which caused some good-natured amusement).
The decor is eclectic - think a Swiss chalet furnished and decorated by a magpie - but somehow it works.
We would return if we were to come back to Rovinj (which I think we will).

We went to Giannino after hotel staff recommendation. The location is good you can choose between the outside terrace or the inside which is similar to a small pub - restaurant.
Food was OK not as good as the recommendation but average. I recommend La Lanterna restaurant which is by far better even if it is slightly more expensive.

On the way to Rovinj, we met the brother of the owner of Giovannino. He recommended it to us and we weren't disappointed. It isn't on the water but there is outdoor seating in a very quaint part of the old town.

Very good restaurant off of a quiet street in the old city center of Rovinj. Service was not bad, and everybody spoke English. The menu was simple and not touristy at all. Delicious local fish and seafood. We had mussels, clams, squid, and fish, and all were great. I highly recommend ordering the grilled squid.

As one reviewer noted below, not much for ambiance or surroundings, but the place has local charm, which, in my opinion, is more important. You can choose from indoor seating in the pub-style interior, or outdoor seating on a lighted terrace. If you want to sit outside, make a reservation ahead of time; otherwise, you should be OK just walking in.

For dessert, try the chocolate cake. Seems very authentic (Italian--I believe the owner is from Italy).
