Nice restaurant the site of the former shipyard. Simply decorated, with good food. The menu is written like a newspaper, with interesting information (you can take like a souvenir). The waiter was very professional and very polite. The food is very good. Very nice homemade warm bread and good olive oil. Good prices, excellent atmosphere. It's hard to find a free table.

When I lived in Rovinj, it used to be a an old restaurant favored by locals & fishermen. Now new owners turned it into a fantastic local restaurant where food means everything and they are not afraid of pushing their limits.
Had an amazing time & excellent food in Kantinon, thank you for a wonderful experience!

Rarely have I given so much thought to writing a review. The restaurant offers good food at very customer friendly prices, a chosen few of top Croatian wines at truly acceptable markups, excellent location in an old stone building in the very heart of the old Rovinj harbour (not accessible by car!)… But still.

Why does the strong local hotel monopolist Maistra, boasting some formidable hotels and one high class restaurant, use one of the very best sommeliers, headwaiters and wine experts in Croatia to head such a down-to-Earth project, wasting his time and knowledge? Why do they assign menu creation to one of the top Croatian chefs when the dishes prepared are pure (mainly Istrian) tradition, prepared in the same enjoyable way by many a good cheap »konoba« in the region?

The dining hall with sizable capacity is quite formidable with its high ceiling; the whole concept of a konoba excludes any hint of posh formal settings, including table cloths, so it is wood and stone only. Comes the first complaint – why are cables and other installations rudely left to hang high on the walls? Supposedly a reminder of 18th century – or just saving some money unnecessarily and spoiling the experience? Looks really ugly. Restrooms are fine and well kept, nostalgic Croatian and Italian music of the sixties pleasantly filling the ear. A bilingual »newspaper« replaces both menu and wine list. Neither of the two lists is exceedingly long, but both look good. Service was good in a nearly empty hall, slightly slower and less attentive with three more tables occupied, but I believe the overall high quality was mainly due to the »commanding officer« initially mentioned, Mr. Perdec, as the waiters do need some more competence to reach the faultless status.

Food… Very tasteful and simple, portions quite big – the very essence of what the average hungry tourist will seek. In its philosophy the kitchen offers a welcome contrast to the ever present fried calamari (squid) and grilled (frozen) white fish. Old inland and coastline specialities, perfectly prepared. But – how can it happen that two out of three cold appetizers come presented on the no-longer fashionable rocket (Eruca sativa) leaves? Faux pas. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed the arrays of both cold and warm appetizers, tried a lot and consequently (and regretfully) had to skip the main course to reach the disappointing deserts. All in all, 11+ is what I can heartily attribute to the kitchen (on a 1-20 scale). Thereagain, I was expecting more creativity from such a renowned chef, even when it comes to traditional core cuisine.

Eventually, when it all comes together, I definitely recommend the place to each and every hungry traveller wanting to explore the Istrian food without having to search inlands. Price vs. quality performance is definitely far better than in the other, cheaper eateries noted by some fellow commenters. You do not enjoy a view (just one single table outside), but after all, that's what you do for the rest of your holiday experience. For a sworn gourmet and a formal occasion, there are two top restaurants nearby, The Wine Vault in the brazenly expensive Monte Mulini hotel, and Monte (with the highest Gault-Millau mark in Slovenia and Croatia) right below the Rovinj cathedral. Both clearly far more expensive…

If you like good honest local seafood for lunch and a nice glass of local wine together with very friendly and efficient service the Kantinon is the place for you to go.

Whats its not , its not a novel cuisine restaurant but its not what you would expect it to be to begin with.
