“Ancient Basilica”
Reviewed December 25, 2013

We visited the Basilica on Christmas eve so we did not pay an entrance fee. The mosaics around the alter are amazing along with the fresco above the back door. Well worth a visit.

“A beautiful and ancient seat of Christianity”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

Located in the centre of Porec, the Basilica is a real jewel. To visit the museum and tour the entire Basilica you have to pay an entrance fee. Whilst it is free to enter on Sundays and at other times when church services are taking place, the whole of the site will not necessarily be available to view. There are incredible late Roman mosaics and remains. Please be aware that this is a Church and there is a dress code. Shawls for ladies with bare shoulders are available from the kiosk / shop.

“Great history, somewhat neglected”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

I am a little more sceptical than most viewers. That's true, the history of Istria is fascinating The basilica witnesses the story of Byzantine rulers trying to regain at least partial control over the heritage of Roman Empire tormented by variety of "Barbarian" tribes- this is surely one of the less known episodes of European history and you are in the middle of action. The basilica is a great example of old Christian archtecture and worth a walk inside and around. The way it is exhibited (and priced) a compromise between an old fashioned "historical" museum Warsaw pact style, often seen in eastern part of the continent. Great mosaics exhibited in the way that would interest fellow medieval professors rather than the public. A lot has been made to make you feel that you are visiting a musem but not the real place where people lived, died and prayed. Views on Porec are really great and the very old town itself gives more feel of authenticity. Want to see (and walk) the same age mosaics shown in real life place and authentic medieval climate? Visit churches in Grado on the other side of the sea.

“Over a thousand years old”
Reviewed October 2, 2013 via mobile

We loved the beautiful mosaic tiles and the old stone architecture of this Byzantine/Venetian church. However, the most glorious part was the gorgeous apse that shimmered with all the glory of its day in the center of the Basilica. Do take the stairs up to the bell tower and see the magnificent views of Porec.
