We stayed from the 21st May to 4th June and we were disappointed. The rooms were OK but the window and door to the balcony had paint peeling off it and the door did not fit making it very draughty. The weather was not very good, it rained a couple of days and it was cold especially in the room. The bath is very small with very high sides so it is difficult to get in and out.
The food was not as good as before and in quite a small area. There were several coaches of people in at one time which made it very difficult to get to the food. The desserts were very boring and not very good. Rice, semolina or fruit in small glasses, tiny pieces of gateau and ice cream every day. Breakfast was good.
We paid for a safe which is in a locked room behind reception. They are more like lockers than safes. The reception staff just gave you the key without checking you had a safe and when we went there one night and asked for the key they said someone was already in the room, when we looked there was no-one there but the door was open with the key in the lock - not very good security.
We went to Rovinj for the day which was really nice and also the trip to Kastav and Opatija which was very good with a very nice guide. In Opatija you can go in the hotels (we went to the one with Cafe Wagner) and have coffee and cake for about £8. We went with Thomson as their trips are the same as in the town.
We love Croatia and have been there 6 times, the last time we stayed at the Pical was 2010 but we would not stay there again.
If you want nice coffee and gorgeous cakes in Porec go the The Cafe del Mar it is very reasonable and the Peach Bellini was heaven.

The moment our bus arrived at the Hotel Pical I was disappointed. This hotel certainly doesn’t match up to a 3* Thomson Hotel and I am surprised that Thomson has chosen to represent it. Previous reviews of this hotel have stated that it needs a lick of paint however, in my opinion it needs knocking down and completely rebuilding. The reviews which depict the hotel as a prison are not wrong, I was surprised that we weren’t given orange jumpsuits instead of a key when we arrived. Apparently the service of the friendly staff and the award winning food is supposed to make up for disappointing first impressions however I did not experience either of these.
Upon our arrival the receptionist greeted us extremely abruptly with “your room isn’t ready” as opposed to a friendly “Hello and welcome to the Hotel Pical”. Unfortunately this tone and attitude continued throughout our stay. What’s more the food which has been given rave reviews was terribly disappointing. Yes, there was plenty of it but the quality certainly didn’t match up to its quantity. What’s more the restaurant itself has the atmosphere of a cattle feeding shed with the attitude of staff being: get them in and get them out as soon as possible, thus making it a most unpleasant dining experience. Also, as drinks were not included in our holiday package it was necessary to buy a beverage with dinner as staff refused to give us a jug of tap water.
With a 3* hotel I am not expecting Claridge’s however wherever I go I do expect certain standards of service. Unfortunately the Hotel Pical failed miserably in this category and quite frankly I couldn’t wait to escape the atmosphere of the hotel. If you fancy staying in a concrete block which is noisy, has terrible food and appalling service then the Hotel Pical is for you. I however certainly won’t be reoffending and repeating my stay in the Pical Prison.

We had read the reviews before we went so knew what to expect. It's a concrete building with tired looking rooms, we had an old TV with a remote control held together with tape. We went in early May and the hotel had lots of guests but no queuing for food, although I could see this would be a problem in the high season. Although the rooms were tired the public areas had been revamped, bar, reception, dining area, pool. The whole place was waiting for the season to begin proper in June, many of the souvenir places out of the town centre were shut, the hotel's children pool was not in use. The brochure mentioned an internet café, which was one computer which was broken, when asked about a repair we were told it had been broken a long time and there were no plans to have it repaired. We enjoyed the pool, which is set out in proper swimming lanes. We stayed in the main block and we had requested a quite room and it was quite so we had a good nights sleep every night, even though the live music in the hotel was very loud.
The stroll into Porec (pronounced Porridge) was OK, short walk through the industrial area does spoil it somewhat, mainly a coach repair garage and a waste disposal centre. There were 95% Germans in the hotel and in Porec itself. The other 5% being Austrian, Swiss, French, and English. The Germans do not have an aperitif before dinner and we were the only ones in the bar, however after dinner the bar was packed. Prices in the bar were quite expensive and you pay top dollar for local plonk. There are lots and lots of tennis players as there are continual local tournaments.
You can walk along the coast northwards, the Pical side, for miles, past other hotels and camp sites. The same on the south side and we found the south side a much better area and I would recommend a hotel in this area. There are lots of people on bikes as well as pedestrians, mothers with pushchairs, the occasional moped and a tourist train. All these on a small paved track about 6 foot wide and I'm sure this would be a health and safety issue in the UK.
We went across to Fortuna on the island, which seemed to have a lot more English guests and I would recommend a visit to get a different view of the town.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday, the staff were friendly and helpful and as long as you know what to expect you should not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Live music almost every night so ask for a quite room.

The Pical hotel is a large NCP car park type building with some additional strange features to disguise the concrete. It wasn't what I expected when I arrived and the building is very ugly that has a strange open plan mezzanine type feature between floors which resembles a prison.. However, saying that after a while we got used to it and had to remember that its origins stemmed from when Yugoslavia was a country with limited funds. The whole hotel needs a massive cash injection to get it up to expectations. The rooms are okay, clean but you can hear through the walls!! The balcony resembled an eastern block council tenement..and it's not the nicest place to sit and relax.
The dining room was a bit of a scramble to find a table which was laid up after the other guests had been in, and we were often left wondering around looking for a clean table. Avoid peak times at the buffet where you will have to get to the back of the queue and wait for your freshly prepared food. There was a good salad buffet and like in most European dining buffets the choice can be a bit repetitive, but we did not go hungry. Reception staff were a bit grumpy and certainly not keen to be of service.(.unless you are German) The hotel is very busy with sporting tennis players. The pool area is clean but again it is a concrete jungle. Location wise it is in a good spot. The walk to Porec old town is not far but enough to have a stroll and the nearby beach area is very good. I looked in envy across at the Hotel Fortuna which is situated on its own island across the harbour, but it is owned by the same hotel chain and seems to have a few of the same issues of the Pical. Basically, it is okay. I didn't pay for a budget holiday but felt as though I was on one. Advice maybe to pay a bit extra and get yourself something worthy of your money.

The hotel has a perfect location if you ever are going to visit Porec, and the surroundings were nice. The hotel itself was like I assumed it was at the time t was buildt, probably in the early 70's. That was however very charming. Old-fashioned keys, bathtubs,, LIve music at the evenings playing dance music., A tiny TV on the rooms and almost no computers. I loved it!! Neccesary modernising was done, as everything was in perfect order. The breakfast was marvellous, and the people working in the hotel was very nice and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to everyone who wants a relaxing stay.

From the moment that we arrived, until the very sad moment that we left . We had a fantastic time. The food was out of this world. Good selection. Great waiting staff. Dont be put off by the auster facade of the outside. Inside has been revamped and is great. Well kept gardens. Very clean pool area. An easy walk into Porec. Are my wife and I going back.....Can we go back again. NOW.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 4th floor at the back. Ok so you look out over the back garden and not the front...

We stayed at this hotel during the first week of October 2012. Overall the hotel was of the usual standard that is found in many places around the western Med. countries. The rooms were clean and had enough storage space. There was one complaint and that was that the bath was very high to get in and out of; I have long legs so it might be dificult for someone short.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was a bit better than the average 'All Inclusive' meals I have had. There were no noisy guests so we managed to sleep well.
The entertainment, singer and group, was in the bar area and the drinks seemed cheap to us compared to UK.
The guests were made up of mostly elderly British and later in the week a big German tennis playing group came to stay.
The hotel is in a very nice location and the swimming pool and grounds are very pleasant.
It just takes about three minutes walking through some trees to get to the sea front. There is no beach but there is some seating and steps down into the sea. A nice wide path has been made along the coast; we walked it both ways for several miles and it is flat and very nicely done.
When you turn left along the path, after about 30 mins you will find yourself in the centre of Porec, which is a lovely medieval town set on a small peninsular.
We had perfect weather which always makes a holiday so much better.
We also managed to get out to other parts of the country and into Slovenia, where we visited Lake Bled, which is beautiful.
