“Horror night”
Reviewed August 15, 2012 via mobile

I had a horrible stay at this hotel! Up on arrival at the hotel, we tried to check-in. The hotel informed us that our triple room (the room we have booked and paid) was not available. The hotel gave us a down grade to a double room. My sister had to sleep on the ground with not even a matrass!!! I really don't recommend this hotel to any of you!

My partner and I stayed at the Hotel Pical from the 10th to 24th July 2012.

Hotel:
In common with the other posts the first impressions of the hotel on exiting the bus is that it needs a facelift and a lick of paint. I don’t want to give the wrong idea though. The Hotel was built late 70’s in Tito’s tenure and as such is very eastern European in design, made mostly in concrete sections and it is the unpainted sections that make the building look dowdy. The hotel is however in very good condition, is immaculately looked after and is spotlessly clean. Every morning there was an army of cleaners, gardeners, maintenance and service staff who looked after the hotel. I cannot emphasize how spotless every room, area and stairwell was.
This hotel is big with large areas being unused including a full sized indoor swimming pool that we found by mistake. The unused areas are well screened from the public and most would not even notice them. The restaurant is on the 1st floor and can only be accessed by two sets of stairs. I have read people complain about this but it did not appear to be a problem for even the most elderly occupants. The swimming pool is a gem of a place. Actually set in the forest, the trees on two sides of the main and childrens pool come to within 5 yards of the pool area. I thought this was fantastic as I could lie in the shade of the mature pine trees just a few feet away from my swim. The pool and poolside in line with the rest of the hotel are in good condition and also immaculately clean. The pool is served by a bar in the children’s poolside and a restaurant/bar joining the adult pool. There are also outdoor and indoor showers, a sauna and steam room attached to the main pool and free to use for residents.
The 5 floors are served by three lifts and a main stairway. The lifts can get really busy during breakfast and dinner times so most times we opted to use the stairs, exactly 101 to the fourth floor. The interior of the hotel is like the exterior 70,s early 80’s in décor but we actually liked that we thought it kind of quirky. It would have been a problem if it had been like this and dirty or in bad repair but this is definitely not the case.

Room:
We stayed on the fourth floor with a sea view. The room was small but adequate for our needs. No coffee or tea making facilities are provided but being aware of this as we are coffee junkies we had already planned to buy a kettle from the local supermarket and that’s what we did. It cost around £7.00/70.00 Kuna. We had a twin bed and the sheets where changed every day on request or every other day if not. The room and bathroom was cleaned everyday without fail and so were always spotless. There is an excellent laundry service with a 1 day turnaround that saw our clothes returned ironed. Just leave the bag and the form and the maid did the rest. The balcony was big enough for two with a wooden bench and plastic picnic table and chairs and with absolutely stunning views over the pool area, the Adriatic and Porec town. There is no air-conditioning in the rooms and they got really hot. We wedged the balcony door open to allow a welcome sea breeze in so it was not so bad. The beds and pillows were fantastically comfortable and extra pillows and covers are provided.

Food:
One word to describe the quality and range of food in the restaurant: Fantastic. We ate there 11 out of the 14 nights and there was always plenty of choice. Meat , fish and cold dishes along with fruits, puddings hot and cold, a pizza bar and drinks dispenser always ensured we where happy. Add to this the excellent waiting staff and I would say that this was without doubt the best hotel food I have ever come across. The restaurant has won multiple awards and it’s easy to see why. Most of the hot food is cooked right in front of your eyes and there was never a problem with shortages even at peak times.

Staff:
What this hotel lacks in looks is more than made up by the quality and number of staff. It’s obvious that the staff are very highly trained and you can expect a level of service that far exceeds the three star rating this hotel has. I will give two examples. We wanted to hire a car for our second week and asked Dusan the receptionist if he knew of any firms we could contact. Dusan personally called the hire firm and arranged for the rep to come to the hotel with the car and all paperwork within an hour. The second example is that at breakfast I chose pancakes and honey. My partner saw what I had but mistook the honey for syrup and asked one of the Chefs where the syrup was. Of course there was none. She returned to the table and within a few minutes the restaurant manager came up to us and apologised for not having syrup for use. This was at peak times with probably in excess of 100+ people dining. We were super impressed by this. All of the staff without exception where approachable, courteous and eager to please. A special mention though for our maid Dorvilla (room 436) Keil, Helena at the pool bar, Helena and Ksenija in the restaurant and Dusan and Robert at reception. They really are exceptional staff.

Location:
The hotel is located in pine forest around 100meters from the sea. There are no sand beaches but you can bathe from the forest edge or set down in the manmade promenades with access to the sea by short ladders , exactly like a swimming pool or access the sea from the natural pebble/rock. The walk into Porec town takes 15 mins and is just a nice place to be, with couples and families, cyclists, roller skaters and individuals walking their dogs in the cool of the evening. You can chose to take the small noddy train into town for £1.00/10 kuna however most of the time it was full up by the time it stopped at the Pical. You can also use the bicycle rickshaws peddled by some really fit guys, this cost £5.00/50.00 Kuna. There are various stalls that line the road into town selling everything from fresh fruit and olive oil to beach gear. Although the walk is lined almost entirely by forest on one side so good is the atmosphere that we always felt extremely safe and at no time where we nervous walking back to the hotel , even at one or two in the morning.

As you have guessed we loved our two week stay at the Pical Hotel. I cannot recommend it enough and in fact we are going back next year!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 4th or 5th floor to avoid the flat roof.

Can't fault the hotel except for the lack of air conditioning, therefore only average score but everything else food service location etc very good. Croatia is a beautiful country and wouldn't hesitate to return but choose a hotel with air conditioning.

We spent three days here at the beginning of July. Good location in a very quiet area in the woods next to the water and a fairly short walk to the town ( or you can take the little train most of the way) The hotel was very clean and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfasts and dinners were above average and had a different variety of food each day.

The hotel itsef is an old concrete design but is very spacious and is not noticeable most of the time. Although there is no air conditioning in the rooms and it was very hot we kept our west facing room we had the first night (booked by a 3rd party) even though we had reserved a room at the back. The great view to the sea was worth any extra heat - we kept the drapes closed most of the day and the room was very liveable and we had no trouble sleeping. There was a nice private balcony which include a rack for clothes drying - very handy.

Overall a very nice relaxing time - we also enjoyed the large pool and the adjacent sunloungers.

Just had almost a week at the Hotel Pical, should have been a week but coch broke down and we had a night at a Service area and a night in a hotel in Austria. Moral is I shall go back but this time fly. If you do go by coach make sure that from UK there are TWO overnight stops.
For the five nights I had at the Pical,. I would not wish for anything better except air conditioning. Lovely situation, fantastic food -lots of it cooked to order, the omelette cook at breakfast even remembered what I wanted from day one.All staff in the bars in the dining room were exceptionally welcoming and seemed to recognise you from day one Dinner choice was always more than you knew what to have, the cleanliness could not be bettered, with a named cleaner and reception staff always welcoming and friendly. forthcoming with advice and there is a facility to arrange excursions. Entertainment by the Pool on some nights was very good and it was easy to get into Porec with lots of friendly bars and restaurants, Particularly recommended is one just across fom the Dotto train terminus adjacent to a _Park. Excellent food,(lots of fish and great salad) the cheapest beer I found and frequented by lots of elderly local gents just dropping in for a beer and a natter on the terrace overlooking the sea. Downside is the road just outside which seems to lead to the Police station and is quite busy.
All in all I loved Porec and the Picalt is a hotel I would feel like returning to again and again, and I shall do

Have just returned from the Pical - ok, the decor in the rooms is dated, but, the staff, food and cleanliness definately make up for it.
Every single member of staff we encountered was smart, friendly and helpful (espesically Kail).
The food was excellent and again all the restaurant staff were lovely.
The cleanlines of all areas of the hotel were second to none - it was spotless.
The actual resort was really good there was loads to do especially water based activities which in my opinion were 'glossed over' in the brochures. Porec is within easy walking distance and is a lovely town with plenty of shops , bars, cafes and restaurants.
Also the nearby bars are well worth a visit with friendly welcoming staff and reasonably priced food and drink.
A beaurtiful country with exceptionally friendly people.
We will definately be going back!!!

Just spent a week at the Hotel Pical and it was fantastic. The food was the best hotel food we’ve had to date, with plenty of choice and all freshly prepared. There is a large pool and more than enough sunbeds for everyone. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was well placed in a pine wooded area just yards from the sea and only 10-15 minutes walk from the centre of Porec. The Thomson Rep Tanja was one of the best who really took care of her guests. The only down side is the lack of air conditioning in the rooms so the advice is to book a fan for the room as soon as you arrive which is what we did and had no problems. With air con this hotel could easily be 4 star.

The resort of Porec was beautiful, with a Roman basilica and quaint Venetian style alleyways bursting with small shops and restaurants. We also visited picturesque Rovinj and Pula, with the latter housing an impressive amphitheatre, but the best trip was to the Plitvice Lakes. It was worth the 5 hours travelling each way as it was one of the most beautiful places we’ve been to, consisting of a national park of waterfalls and lakes with vivid green and blue colours.

The holiday overall was a wonderful holiday experience and we shall definitely return.
