My wife and I were looking for a week long break in May and wanted to go somewhere different. We had called into Dubrovnik on a cruise about four years ago so we decided on Porec in Croatia and after looking on Trip Advisor we booked a late half board deal with Thomsons at the Valamar Riviera.
When we first saw the hotel and its location we thought that it was ideal,on the promenade, with a terrace and overlooking the marina and a small island across the bay.The narrow cobbled streets, jewellers, market, cafes and restaurants were just what we were expecting and looked forward to.
The staff at reception were very welcoming and pleasant, as indeed were all the staff.throughout the holiday. However, when we went to our room we were quite disappointed. It was much smaller than we had thought after seeing the room depicted in the Thomsons brochure, although it was clean, modern and comfortable. We were expecting either a sea view room or one overlooking the rooftops of Porec,we were not expecting to overlook a building site
As it turned out we were one of the lucky Thomsons guests who had arrived on the same flight! One couple had only a concrete wall to look at,and another couple had a neighbouring hotels air conditioning right by their window,Unfortunately we were all informed that there were no other rooms.available.
The buffet breakfasts in the hotel were good and and nothing was too much trouble for the cook behind the counter, she would cook you fresh scrambled egg or omelettes and have it delivered to you table.but the evening meals were another matter. We never go on holiday abroad and expect British food but we struggled to find something we really liked for our main evening meal. The starters and desserts were fine but the choice for the main meal was not the best,in fact we ate in Porec town about four evenings and we really enjoyed the food and ourselves. The Croatian people are very friendly and have a very good sense of humour!

It may be that because we booked with Thomsons we were allocated a small room, and if we had booked direct we would have had a much larger one, however that is something I have taken up with Thomsons personally.

Just returned from a superb week with my wife at Valamar Riviera.
The hotel is newly refurbished and positioned in a fantastic location facing the seafront / harbour with the beautiful rustic old town, just behind, this s the perfect base to explore.
Now I have stayed in many hotels, all over the world, and I have never found more accommodating, polite and enthusiastic staff ANYWHERE!!! Truly the staff here cannot do enough for you, always with a smile, and NOT because they expect tips. They really love their jobs, and seem to care about the guests enjoyment immensely.
They happily ferry you about in the minibus to the other group hotels with swimming pools, went into town to buy tickets for a music festival that we wanted to attend, make reservations for you, advise you on where to go eat / etc. Just as a hotel should be, but all too often isn't!
Great terrace out the front to eat and drink on too, quality is great and prices extremely reasonable.
Only drawbacks for me is due to the architecture of Porec the windows in the rooms are quite small (but I think this is right to stay in keeping with medieval town - so I'm happy with this) - apart from this the rooms are luxurious & beutifully kitted out to a very high spec (loved the heatlamp idea in the bathroom!) Also top central location means no pool, but you have 3 other Valamar sister hotels all within 5 mins free journey with great pools & one with a private beach - so don't let this put you off.
Our particular room was near the cleaners store cupboards and I found the noise woke me on one morning, but I spoke to reception and it wasn't an issue after that, although I do think the walls / soundproofing were a bit thin in general if I'm honest.
Restaurant food was very good, service again amazing, if I had to be picky would say the buffet serving islands were a bit small, but never seemed to be much of a queue.
If you want to experience great service in a wonderful central location, look no further. Truly amazing happy staff.
They have a bit communal tip jar in reception, so rather than tip as went along (like I say they never expect) we made a very healthy contribution as we were leaving, as this then gets distributed fairly, so the cooks, cleaners, bar and reception people who made the whole experience great for us get a share.
First time in croatia too and intend to go back next year - fabulous place - didn't see a McDonalds, Starbucks or any litter! And as for safety not a single policeman in my whole time there outside the airport - which speaks volumes!
Go visit if you can!

Room Tip: If you want a balcony room (very few available) please note these are 30% smaller than other rooms b...

The staff couldn't do enough to help. It was a pleasure to leave a tip for the chambermaid, who almost kissed us goodbye!
Excellent disabled parking free of charge right outside the hotel.
The room was small but had plenty of cupboard space, but the balcony overlooking the harbour made up for that - especially as I am a smoker. The shower was huge with excellent water pressure.
The satellite channels included BBC World and Sky News and the wifi was good enough to get iPlayer in the evenings.
Bar prices were fair and the breakfast adequate - although bacon and sausages not anywhere near UK standard. Seeing as the majority of the clientele were German or Austrian, there was a good selction of ham, cheese etc. Synthetic orange juice and stewed coffee seem to be the norm in most hotels - there is room for improvement here.
On the wish list - an ice machine on each floor would be brilliant.

Room Tip: If you smoke, you must have a balcony to avoid constant trips outside.

I travelled with a friend on a fairly 'last-minute' holiday with Thomson. I have always wanted to visit Croatia and wasn't disappointed. The hotel is centrally located and is very stylish without being pretentious. All the staff were very polite and friendly and seem happy to work in the hotel. The package holiday included the buffet meal, but you may also choose to eat in one of the many inviting restaurants in Porec. Hotel guests can use the indoor pool at the Hotel Diamant and also the outdoor pool and beach on the island. There is a lot of sea bathing opportunities - from rocks - and sea was warm and clear. Travelled 11 May, had two days rain and the rest sunny and a little breezy. Nearby Vrsar and Rovinj worth a trip.

Room Tip: Room 120 spacious, shower, overlooks street. May experience a little noise from kitchens but not int...

Wonderful hotel well located on the harbour side and within a short walk of the town.

Stayed in room 313 overlooking the old town, nice view and great in room facilities... The room was spacious with a fab bathroom, mini bar, kettle, air con and satellite tv.

The staff were very friendly, giving advice on local food options and driving us to the sister hotel to use the indoor pool.

Being on a half board option we were pleasantly surprised by the range and amount of food on offer - including 'show' cooking at both breakfast and dinner. It was always delicious and the staff happy to accommodate requests.

I'd really recommend staying here - not a resort (no pool) but a super hotel close to all the action. Can't wait to get back there!

My husband and I spent a few days at this hotel last summer in July. Stayed in one of the rooms facing the City Center and Adriatic Sea, what a VIEW!!!! Very friendly hotel staff, nice clean hotel & rooms, grade A bed linens, GREAT complimentary hot breakfast, lots of restaurants, clubs and shops all nearby. You can also take a ferry to the beach which is a 10 minute ferry ride to Sv. Nikola Island and spend the entire day on this magnificent beach. Ferry runs every 1/2 hr all day long. The outside front area of the hotel is decorated all in white, white couches, tables & oversized umbrellas. Great place to hang out anytime of the day and have a glass of wine, nibble on domestic Prosciutto & Cheese garnished with olives and warm walnuts. It was perfect. The only one thing I would like to point out is that there is music ALL NIGHT LONG so if you are a light sleeper, I recommend not staying in the area. This is a 4 star hotel and won't disappoint. See you in a few months Valamar:))

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the hotel are a bit quieter during the night.
