“Lovely Surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2012 via mobile

This was our first time staying in a Sobe (like a bed and breakfast) in Croatia.

The staff have excellent English and German, are very friendly and helpful.

The board includes breakfast AND dinner.

Whilst not haute cuisine, it was great solid home cooked meals and plenty of it.

It is located close to one of Plitvice park entrances. You walk there via a local supermarket where you can stock up on picnic items for lunch in Plitvice.

Staff (apart from young girl) was aloof and not overly friendly. Given it is a "homestay" and not really a hotel it would have been nice for the staff/owner to be a little friendly..

This hotel (more like a B&B; not sure why its not listed there) had it all. Great rooms, food and service. Even a jacuzzi on the patio; great to relax after a long walk in the National Park. What I liked is that Vlado (the owner) doesn't skimp on anything; all is first class. Especially the food; fresh trout for dinner. Vlado used to own a restaurant; he knows food!

The prices are on the high side, but worth it IMHO. The downside; he doesn't take credit cards so I had to bring cash. But he does take euros and US dollars (I paid in both!).

Accommodation wise the Villa Mukinja was fine. Rooms were reasonable size, bathrooms were clean. Location was a short drive to parking for visiting the lakes ( we didn't walk due to rain and time constraints). The nice thing was the supply of waterproof raincoast that were available for use. The girl working here was very helpful and had lots of information about vsiting the Lakes.
What dissappointed was the food and the general attitude. I picked the Villa Mukinja based on glowing reviews of the dinners here. Maybe there's a different cook now but the food was really just ok. First course was a nice local cheese with prsut, bread and pepper spread. Main was veal chops grilled.. or rather overgrilled..with no seasoning or sauce. Served with fried potatoes. Dessert was...nonexistant. Wine was not a good value at 20 Euro a bottle, especially since we'd had some very good wines for much less cost. Different groups were served different meals..it appears if you stay more than one night you get better food as the table of 6 got beef tenderloin!
The thing that was most offputting occured after dinner. First we watched a video that's been produced by the owner and is offered for sale. Then we were invited by the owner to follow him in our car to a local "shop" where local crafts people had their work on display. It was 9:30 pm, raining and we'd all been drinking! We were assured it would be interesting with no pressure to buy and was only 10 minutes down the road. We declined.
Breakfast was the stingiest of all our trip and also the only one with no hot food. Finally we paid cash, not a problem, but received no proper receipt and at no time were our passports verified for the tourism agency. I do not recommend staying here.

We stayed here one night only to visit Plitvice National Park. It's a short drive to the entrance of the park. It is a chalet style building and we found the hosts friendly and welcoming. Dinner that night was a pleasant surprise (especially since we didn't realise it was included) The host showed us fresh rainbow trout that had been caught that morning and it was superb and tasted wonderful, cooked to perfection. Dessert was a slice of an enormous frosted cake full of fresh cranberries and chocolate cake and cream. It was also delicious! This was a highlight on our travels throughout Croatia. Host was very helpful on how to visit park more easily and had plenty of maps.

Room Tip: Quite a few stairs might be harder for elderly visitors.

This is just as "below standard" bed and breakfast which is priced at deluxe Hotel. We are over 50 traveling a lot, and this is the first time I had really the feeling to be swindled.
We booked the only left room and it was three beds room. Half-board included and we have been charged for 3 dinners even if we just a couple. And the coffee I have asked after the dinner has been charged 4 Euros (more expensive than in Paris).
Saying that the location is good (walking distance from the park). the room we had was small, no air con, and not so clean, the owner is nice and helpful (but for the price he asked, this is the less he can do), dinner and breakfast are served in the basement (no view). The food is just ok, do not expect fresh bread or home made cake in the morning. For dinner you will get is grilled fish the first day and grill veal the second day. The qty is there.
I will not recommend that B&B. I am sure we can find better for half the price.
