An amazing part of the world, if you're in croatia it is definitely worth stopping by! I recommend staying the night before and night after so that youcan spend the whole day, otherwise you will only be able to do the shorter walks and not see much as there are tonnes of day trippers on guided tours that walk slowly.
We stayed at "hotel sven" and it was lovely and great value with a small kitchen to cook stove top and microwaved meals. There is no need to book a tour as there is ample signage for all the routes.
We took the longest route so we could see the whole park and it was worth it. It was a bit muddy so wear enclosed shoes. If you're of an average fitness the long walkis closer to 5-6 hrs and not 8. It's not very strenuous, most people could do it.

Lastly, buy food and get the cashout you will need in whatever city you are coming from as there is only one ATM in the whole park in one of the big hotels, and hotel and not all the restaurants were open when we were there. There is a small convenient store which would get you buy if you didn't bring anything but if you would like some choice definitely buy food before you arrive.

I can't recommend taking a trip to the lakes enough. It was pretty deep in snow during February but the main paths on route K had been cleared. I decided to be adventurous and get up and close with the lakes and take route A that was waist deep in snow. A little dangerous in places and benefited from having one person ahead of me who had already put prints in the snow to step into.

I would recommend taking a packed lunch during this time of year as only the cafe at the beginning of the park is open and there is nowhere else in the park to purchase food or drink and it will take you a few hours to walk around.

Took the 206 bus from the main Zagreb bus station (you can buy a ticket in the terminal or on the bus) which took just over 2 hours. Around 90KR to get there and another 90 to get back.

This is one of the most magically beautiful places I have been to. I have been a lot of places and seen a lot beautiful things but this will be one of the most memorable. The crystal clear water and fascinating hiking paths was like something out of a movie. It was so hard to not jump in the water! Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and be ready to get your workout on. Lots of up and downhill trails and small pathways. I would highly recommend taking a day trip to this wonderful treasure, I can promise you will not leave disappointed.

The lakes were still beautiful, covered in ice and the ground was covered in snow. There were hardly any tourists, which was fantastic! However, we were only charged 1/2 price entry fee because more than half of the lakes were inaccessible [due to the snow], walking tracks were closed, and no trains or boats were operating - for obvious reasons. Still worth a visit!
