“Disappointing and overrated”
Reviewed September 19, 2006

There's no doubt that Plitvice Lakes is a stunning stunning national park and well worth a visit at any time of year - we had a wonderful time in the park and were in awe of the lakes and waterfalls.

However... the Hotel Jezero left us distinctly uninspired. Having stayed in a 4* Hotel all the previous week (Diamant in Porec - amazing hotel!) we were less than impressed with the tired lodgings that greeted us in the park.

The rooms were fine, but NOT 4*. If it was a 3* and we had paid less, then fine, but we hadn't! The view was stunning (ask for lake view rooms on floor 4 Green wing), and the hotel was like an alpine lodge. However, there was no shower screen, a lightswith was hanging off and when you emptied the bath the water erupted from a metal plate next to the toilet and flooded the place!

The 'A la carte' restaurant is just not worth it. Don't even bother. It is 4 or 5 times the price of eating out elsewhere in the area and the food is very mediocre. The staff are something else though. Our waitress was so uninterested we were tempted to walk out without paying - I don't think she would have even noticed! The lobby bar staff were equally uninterested and downright rude. I walked up to get a beer and the waitress slammed down her cloth, sigh and rolled her eyes before taking my order.

The reception staff are nice and the hotel is clean. There is no evidence of the advertised 'pool' and the 'gym/health centre' seemed to be a room with some stacking chairs in... There is a free large jacuzzi but you have to pay 40 kn for 1/2 and hour in the sauna.

For the money and the lack of services, I would urge anyone to book one of the many guest houses in the area, many of which are close to entrance 1. I met someone who had stayed in one for £30 for 2 people per night. The room was clean and the land lady was friendly.

Overall, If Jezero was a 3* hotel I wouldn't be writing this review. However, it says it is 4* and it most definitely doesn't offer 4* service. As they are a tourist trap for hundreds of coach tours they seem to have a captive audience and don't care about retaining customers.

  • Liked — The view from the balcony
  • Disliked — The exceptionally rude bar staff
  • Tips/Secrets — Book a local sobe/zimmer/apartaman - rooms in local houses - cheap and exciting!

Very well located in front of the National Park Gate ¿#2?, and very suitable for early morning walks...

Rooms are OK, but A/C is required if the outside temperature is to hot.

The thing to improve is the Restaurant: We were in a group of 40 people, and in the restaurant waiters were not friendly at all. In the morning breakfast there was a large cue to get something to eat...

The shop is very expensive, if it's raining buy your plastic raincoat in the Park-Entrace shop. (there is one @ gate #1).

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is certainly a "must see" and one of Croatia's treasures. The lakes and waterfalls here are far better than those at Krka, further to the south. Krka can get mobbed with people, and while Plitvice is certainly busy, the layout of the walkways around the lakes means that the numbers are more "filtered" - you can walk around without feeling you are part of a huge mob. You should allow at least 4-5 hours to make the whole tour at Plitvice. For this reason, it is a good idea to reserve a night's accommodation in the Park. Of the available hotels, the Jezero is generally reckoned to be the best. My wife and I found it a pleasant place to stay; as with other reviewers, I would agree that a/c would be a useful addition, particularly in July, but travelers sometimes have to sacrifice one thing for another - here you are sacrificing a/c, but in return you get to visit an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Jezero's restaurant was good for both breakfast and dinner. The lakes are a comfortable drive from Zagreb.

  • Liked — Convenience for the lakes
  • Disliked — Lack of a/c (but for one night, it was fine)
  • Tips/Secrets — Worth staying overnight at this hotel if you visit all the lakes and waterfalls, as you need about 5 hours to do so.

The hotel has been renovated to a good standard, presumably quite recently. However, we didn't feel it offered good value for money and the advertised swimming pool didn't exist: just a small triangular jacuzzi. One other thing: if you visit the Park and want to stay in one of the hotels (they appear to be a chain) for more than about a day or two, you'll need a car. We didn't and were forced to endure the hotel/park restaurants which all had the same menus and were expensive for what was offered.

  • Liked — Clean rooms and recent refurbishment
  • Disliked — Value for money, no pool, expensive menus and average food
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay at Plitvice for no longer than two days or take a car to get to external restaurants

We stayed just one night at Hotel Jezero. The hotel was average and very tired. We had heard that its the best of the 3 hotels in the Park, so hate to think what the others are like. Thankfully the setting - the lakes and park - make up for it (the park was probably the highlight of our trip to Croatia - just fantastic experience walking over and around the lakes and waterfalls). Food was actually quite good - wouldn't have expected so from the look of the restaurant.

The big plus of this hotel is the location. There are only 3 in the national park and this one is right next to one of the entrances to the park. You can walk to the entrance in 5 minutes.
It is one step up from basic but if you get a balcony room on the lakeside to the right of the reception (they class the two sides of the reception blue and green, blue is the right from memory), you can sit on the balcony and hear one of the waterfalls.
It is feels like a state run hotel with functional breakfast, but the rooms are OK albeit not air conditioned.
We never ate in the hotel apart from breakfast. If you have a car, turn left out of the car park and head for one of the grill places on the main road. You can sit outside, OK on the main road but it`s pleasant enough with your fellow travellers and the prices are reasonable. Don`t expect epicurean delights but then that`s true of the whole of Croatia.

We stayed for 1 night in May 06. Our reception was quick and efficient and we were very impressed with the speed of the reception, processing coach loads of guests in double quick time. The room is basic but clean and comfortable and the location of the hotel couldn’t be more convenient. Breakfast is adequate; dinner was excellent, with great service and good reasonably priced food. I can imagine no aircon would be a problem in
Summer, but it wasn't an issue in May. Plitvice Lakes is a must see if you travel to Croatia, stunning.
