“Still the very best in Motovun”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

I go back to Motovun several times a year and as usual, headed straight to "Pod Voltom". I am always amazed by the fact that, however full they may be (and believe me, they can be very full because good news travels well), the service is always first class and the quality and standard of the food is the same. Excellent. I had the fillet steak with truffles which was one of the best I have ever had, superb quality and cooked to perfection, and the pancakes with chocolate and walnuts - simply divine. Beware, pancakes in this part of the world are NOT crepes, they are soft and pliable and delicious. My kids (fussy eaters) had the vegetable soup which they proclaimed the best in the world in true teen bombastic fashion, and chips and sweet cabbage salad, firm favourites throughout our stay (they serve them this since they won't eat meat or truffles and the owner likes to make sure his guests are happy). What can I say? Kids don't appreciate the finer things in life. My husband always has the parma ham and sheep cheese starter, then the steak. We had thehouse red wine, produced by the owner and so very different from the bottled stuff one can buy in the shops: smooth, non-acidic, slips down easily and leaves no headache. :-))) Other favourites are the four cheese gnocchi and the "fuzi" (fusilli) made by hand by the owner's mother and served with a variety of sauces. And in the summer, dining in the evening in their outside space by the city walls, is about as romantic as it gets - not only do you get the most superb food, you also get to watch the sunset over the valley below. a MUST for all foodies!

“truffles, truffles, truffles”
Reviewed June 24, 2012

A very good family run Istrian restaurant - Italian flavours with a local twist, and great truffles! A cosy, attractive brick voulted interior, with friendly staff in a lovely hilltop medieval town..

“Superb food, service and views”
Reviewed November 25, 2011

I have eaten at this restaurant on numerous occasions and at all times of the year. Pod Voltom is a traditional-style Istrian family-run restaurant and it shows. The food is always perfectly cooked, the service attentive without being intrusive, the owner/chef happy to try to accommodate even the most difficult of requests. During the winter all food is served in the restaurant itself, a traditional Istrian style room, and often there is a live fire in the fireplace for added atmosphere. In the summer they have tables set up on the lower square, by the city walls and overlooking the magnificent Mirna valley. A delicious dinner while the sun sets is about as romantic as it can be.
The food itself is well presented, the selection of dishes quite large, but this IS truffle country and many of the dishes contain truffles. (You CAN ask for the same but without the truffles if you really don't like them.) The parma ham and cheese platter is always exceptional quality, the soups are truly authentic and home-made, the steak simply superb, the panna cotta, chocolate cake with truffles and pancakes divine. Their signature dish, the "Pod Voltom" medallions, are cooked with pancetta (bacon) and mushrooms and served with a fries; the stroganoff is incredible; the fusi (fuzi in Istria) with white truffles just amazing. Yes, I know I am gushing, but you do have to try it to believe it! :-)
Every time we go to Motovun, this is where we head off to first.
