“Enjoyable stay”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

We spent a pleasant few days in Pomena in Hotel Odisej. When we arrived we were very surprised by the number of small coastal cruise boats in the harbour, one of which was playing very, very loud music which could be heard all over the village. We at first thought we would like to be moved to the back of the hotel, as we had booked one of the more expensive sea view rooms but, after chatting to reception decided to try the room for 1 night. I am glad to say that was the only night this happened, and is apparently more common at weekends. Our room was comfortable, as were the public rooms. Breakfast was fine with a good variety. We had one dinner in the hotel Tavern which was quite good but not anything to rave about. Island is beautiful and perfect for a short break (we stayed 4 nights). We found reception staff very helpful, especially Sanja. Probably wouldn't return as there are so many other islands to visit, but enjoyed our stay.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Odisej. Reception staff were superb. They even arranged at no cost to take us down to Polace where we wanderd around the Roman ruins. We caught the National Park minibus back to Pristaniste and walked back along the lakeside path. There is a super bar/cafe here. A good place for a beer and take in the amazing views. You can take the boat from Malimost to the Benedictine Monastry.Local seafood restaurants are friendly and good value. We were able to enjoy a 4 night for the price of 3 at the Odisej and thought the equivalent of 96 euros a night good value. We booked direct with ALH and paid when we left. The receptionist suggested a room away from the front of the hotel to avoid noise from the 'party' boats that line up and party the evening away. Our balcony room had a super sea view. When you buy your National Park ticket make certain you mention you are staying at the Odisej otherwise you will get a one day ticket. The price is the same and includes your ferry ride to the Benedictine Monastry.Turn up early in Dubrovnik when you buy your Catamaran ticket! Beware touts turn up and buy blocks of tickets. They jump to the front by going to the back of the kiosk on the jetty! You cannot buy the tickets in advance.

Room Tip: Ask for a side room with a balcony

We arrived to be given a inferior room to the one we booked,we had paid for a balcony. We were moved quickly which was good but the comment by the receptionist that it was going to rain anyway so we wouldn't be needing it, was probably unessasary! As with previous reviewers we were ready to be less than impressed with the hotel but actually were pleasantly suprised our room first floor was clean and functional. I think with this place it depends on getting a good deal, if I paid the rate shown in the room I would expect much more but for the price I paid I think it was value. That aside the island is heaven and we spent 5 full days here, swimming, kayaking and chillin and it did rain once but we were treated to the most spectacular lightning show so it didnt matter one little bit.

This hotel is lucky its the only one in the national park, otherwise I don't think it would attract as many customers. Ground floor rooms smell of sewerage and overall the rooms are dated with a dark poorly lit bathroom. The safety and security of the hotel also needs a review as the hotel is very open as it leads onto the street via a back, poorly lit entrance. Also, if your looking for an extremely quiet hotel then this is the one, as by 10pm its "dead as a door nail" with hardly anyone about. This actually applies to the whole Island, by 10pm the town is dead, with the only noise being some very far distant music off a yacht.
Actually to be honest, I would not recommend this hotel or this Island. A day trip from Cavtat or Dubrovnik would be enough. There is very little to do, except spend your morning in the forest looking for a rocky ledge to lie on by a lake that you need to be a strong swimmer to get into. Also, the transport network is extremely bad. To get there from Dubrovnik you would need to get the early morning or late evening ferry (if you miss this you pay 50e to go up the coast to catch another), the ferry drops you at one end of the island where you have to make your way to the other side of the island where the 2 island resorts are located. Your options here are to rent a car or get the one taxi that is there... costing another 50e. In my opinion you're better off visiting this island on one of the daily excursions that goes from Cavtat or Dubrovnik. If you have already booked to go to MIjet then my advice is to not do what we done and forget to bring your driving licence! ;-)

I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and from the first day I can honestly say both my girlfriend and myself were seriously disappointed.

Day 1: we got a ground floor room and as soon as we entered the stench of sewage was overwhelming. The toilets was blocking up or something. The hotel manager couldn't explain the situation either to me so I changed room for us. The reception staff seems disinterested in our plight and simply gave us another room key like we were an inconvenience.

Day 2: There was a minor leak with our toilet and the room below us reported this to reception. We were out touring for the day and so returned later that evening to be handed back the key to our room. Somebody was in our room without our knowledge that evening / night. I asked the receptionist to explain the situation and she clearly seemed worried, the security guard walked away not caring and so I had no idea what just happened in our room. I demanded a meeting with the manager in the morning.

Day 3: Prior to my meeting I scoped out the security in the hotel. There is free access for anybody on the street to walk into the hotel at any time at night. The security guard present isn't worth talking about. I also picked out 5 blind spots at the back entrance to both sections of the hotel that are not monitored by security cameras. Anybody could be attacked and there is no safety.
I met the manager that morning who explained the situation. I then asked her if she heard about the poor Irish girl who was strangled in Mauritius. She said nothing like that would happen in Mijet as it was 'idyllic' to which I replied so was Mauritius. My concern was if my girlfriend had gone back to our room when there was people in our room unbeknownst of us then, she may have paniced, screamed and who knows what may have occurred. The manager didn't seem to understand who proceeded to tell me the hotel was safe.

The hotel is not safe. Anybody can walk up to anybodies room at any time and break in. There are very few cameras, there is 1 security man, the receptionist's have no clue what is going on, the manager is oblivious to what happens in the real world. All in all I would not stay here and quite frankly it is only a matter of time before a serious incident happens here at this hotel.

Dear Guest,

We thank you for the review, even if we think that is written not in good faith, with untrue facts and assumptions.

Let us comment it point by point:

Day 1 - it is true that your room was having issues with bad smell. At that same moment we could not give you an answer about the cause of the bad smell because, simply, we did not know the reason. we changed your room, immediately.

Day 2 - hotel maintanance staff entered in your room to avoid major damage to hotel property. iIt is our duty to maintain and perserve hotel property the best we can. We cannot see how this could be an issue.

Day 3 - We are proud that we work and in live in a country that is extremely safe (whose crime rates are one of the lowest in Europe). We are happy that each year more and more tourist recognize this fact and return as guests. Mljet island is not an exception! Hotel covers most of common areas with cameras, we have a security guard on duty from 10,00 pm till 06,00 am, and from june till september, policemen and coast guard are frequently in the hotel.

However, once again thank you for the comments, we will constantly try to keep our customers as much satisfyed as we can.

Best regards,

Having read all the bad reviews I was a bit worried, but we have really enjoyed our stay in Mljet and Pomena is a lovely little town with plenty of good restaurants.
The bathrooms are small and could use an update, but nothing offensive.
I think the problem is that it is quite expensive for a 3 star hotel, so people expect more for their money. But I guess that's due to being the only hotel in a National Park.

Room Tip: Although the views are spectacular, and probably worth paying extra for - party yachts dock in front...

read all the reviews and was a little concerned if i'm honest but on arrival was very pleasantly surprised! definitely don't go half or full board as there are about a dozen restaurants in the same bay, 2 mini markets and a cafe that does very cheap lunches and takeaway.

the entrance to the the national park are just a few hundred metres away so it's a great location, you could stay in polace but you have to get a minibus to the park every day and really if you are staying at mljet you'll want to go swim in the lakes every day.

room was clean and the air conditioning worked a treat. we paid for the cheapest room but chuffed to see we had a balcony, i suspect if we'd gone with sea view it would have been too noisy anyway

if you come in on the ferry don't get a taxi! call the hotel and they'll send their minibus for much less money. enjoy!

Room Tip: i stayed on 4 floor facing inland with a balcony and it was very quiet
