“Great hotel - shame about the food”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Stayed here in September. Made very welcome on arrival and rooms processed quickly. We were on the 9th floor so lifts necessary - no problems at all, AND wonderful views ! Very spacious, well kept reception rooms with plenty if seating. Terrace also offered plenty of seating - good for evening entertainment which was produced here during our stay. We travelled with Saga and NO we are not aged - early 60's ! As such we were staying on an all inclusive basis so had a designated bar. This was fine except the majority of guests were NOT all inclusive so the staff attended to the paying guests in deference to us ! Gave an impression if being second class visitors. We were also offered the cheapest drinks possible - not good !! The swimming pools - both indoor and outdoor were lovely with lots of space to lounge. The sea was directly outside the hotel gates so access into the glistening clear Adriatic was excellent - I swam at least twice in the sea as well as the pools. The main downside of our stay was the good. The restaurant is below the reception so no view from any if the windows. Buffet food is served which appeared to be 80% packeted and frozen. Turkey and pork fillet was fried every eve which was good but with the hotel full, it was a mad scramble to put anything else on the plate ! Good choice of deserts at 7pm but by 7.30pm no choice at all. It really was a canteen not a restaurant. The staff were very helpful in clearing up plates - sometimes before meal finished !!! But were so busy they had no time for care - wine and water thrown into the glass before rushing on ! We enjoyed our stay in Makarska and despite the food, in the hotel. We would definitely return to the resort but maybe look for alternative food options (one couple ate their dinners elsewhere despite having paid for all inclusive !).

Just spent 2 weeks at this very nice hotel. Like most of previous comments the only downside was the food, or at least the lack of variety. One other downside is that the side of the bath is quite high so getting in and out to shower can be a little difficult for some. Totally disagree with the comment made by sunnysearle about it being like " God's waiting room" because of Saga holiday makers as we went with Saga and I have only just turned 60 and my husband 64 and we are by no means over the hill! Yes there were older people there, from all nationalities, but there were also lots of younger people as well. We found most of the staff very friendly but as one comment stated the Germans seem to get priority on everything.
All that aside a nice hotel and Makarska a lovely place.

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor and looked out on the patio and sea, lovely.

Excellent holiday. Great hotel and no problems whatsoever. We travelled with Saga for the first time and were impressed with the service and their Rep in the Hotel, Ana, was exceptional, nothing to much trouble and she certainly made our holiday trouble free. The area is beautiful and as stated by others the sea is clear the beach is so close you can practically touch it from the hotel.
The surrounding mountains give a marvelous backdrop to the whole area. Our trips to Split and Trogir were good although we did have to contend with two cruise ships which were there as well. We also had the same problem and Dubrovnick, I think they must have have followed us down the coast. All in all a great holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms are all good but we were on floor 1 and would have better views if we had been higher.

I have just returned from a two week holiday with my wife at the Meteor Hotel in Makarska.
First the negative point - our Jet 2 flight was well over two hours late and we arrived at the hotel at 11.30 pm.
Reception staff were efficient, pleasant and they quickly dealt with us to allow us to go to our room. Our evening meal had been left in our room and was very welcome and enjoyable.
Our balcony had a good view of the sea, the bay and lighthouse to the right and the mountain range to the left.
The room was a good size and in a clean condition. The bed was comfortable and especially the enormous pillow.
The breakfast was between 7am and 10am and had the usual types of food including cereals, salads and bacon, eggs, sausages etc. You could also get the chef to prepare your chosen omelet with any combination of ham cheese or mushrooms. The drinks were from vending machines and included various juices and hot drinks.
Evening meals started at 7pm and had many and varied choices of starters and main meals with a smaller choice if deserts. All were cooked well and enjoyable. Once seated you were quickly visited by the drinks member of staff asking what you required. If you wanted you could pay for the drinks in cash or put on your room number.
The previous comments about the trolleys at meal times are exaggerated and although they are always clearing up the tables when meals are finished and also delivering freshly cooked food, I found the staff pushing them professional and friendly. In fact, in my opinion, all the hotel staff were very good and helpful.
The hotel is right by the sea with its clear water and as long as you wear something on your feet the beach is fine to walk on and do some swimming.
The hotel lived up to all my expectations and the surrounding areas outside the hotel were pleasant with excellent walks along the promenade in either direction. Turning left takes you to the lovely old town or the other bay were most of the tourist ships are anchored. Or a pleasant walk through the woods heading towards Tucepi. Remember to take water with you even if you are in the shade.
We went on two trips by Thomson one to Split and Trogir and the other was an island trip to Brac. Both were very enjoyable but we especially enjoyed the one Split and Trogir.
The entertainment at the hotel was a little mixed in quality but the singers were good and the evening of fire juggling etc. was unexpected and fun.
Both of us had a good holiday and would recommend the hotel and area as excellent.

I'd like to start by saying what a stunningly picturesque area. The backdrop of the Biokova Mountains, which appear to loom above the resort and the pine trees on the promenade and hillsides are just beautiful.

The hotel is in an excellent position, very convenient to town/harbour 10 min stroll, and on a lovely pedestrian promenade. Pebble beach just across walkway, lined with trees and so plenty of shade. Waters of Adriatic are crystal clear and very inviting however strongly recommend jelly shoes or similar due to pebbles everywhere, and if a beach lover you may consider acquiring one of the many foldup mats to lie on. If going to main beach areas there are beds to hire. Plenty of tourist stalls and restaurant / bars available only short stroll away. For changing currency we found best rate at Bank on main front.

We were a late evening arrival and check-in was quick and well organised. We were welcomed with a drink and advised that as we were too late for dinner that evening a plate had been left in our room, which was very thoughtful.

We were allocated East Tower inward facing over the Terrace area. Room not over large but certainly adequate, plenty of storage, 2 twins placed together. Good curtains to keep out early morning brightness. TV only really had CNN & BBC World - I found an occasional old US series but not often. Signal was not always good. Safe free in room. Bathroom decent size but bath sides VERY high - would be difficult for someone with mobility probs or arthritis etc. Not all rooms the same though, so please check if it might be a problem for you. Towels and gels replaced daily. Room seemed very clean and acceptable. Additional pillows were provided upon request. Floors were carpeted which greatly reduces noise and was a welcome feature.

Towels for the pool area acquired from the Wellness Centre - 50Kn deposit per towel. Excellent indoor pool and bed area, Gym and sauna and treatments if required, although latter is at a cost obviously. Wellness Centre has a shower/change area so if you have late departure you can change easy enough.

Restaurant was the only area I felt hotel let itself down on but it was still ok. Breakfast was usual mix of cold meats, cereal, bacon eggs etc. However the wait for the toaster was a joke. Each slice needed 3 goes to brown it, by which time the queue gets longer and more people jump in. Don't know why they don't get another toaster. The omelette station is always busy and he only has one pan on the go at once. I noticed the chefs had a tendency to undercook the eggs as the queue grew, so watch carefully if you are funny over your eggs. The hotplate for those wanting fresh fried eggs was not a good non stick. The eggs on the buffet counter had as usual all dried out and hardened up after several minutes and the scrambled eggs were very dry. Good selection of breads though. Coffee machine very bitter - but look around as by the side of one machine are jars of nescafe, decaf and some other type. The evening buffet was quite repetitive and sadly for my taste a lot of the stuff - particularly the turkey and pork dishes were too dry and over cooked. Quite limited choice for a buffet given size of hotel. However they did regularly check and replenish where necessary. Unless going with Saga (included) drinks can be paid to waitress or placed on room number. Staff were quick to take away used plates and everywhere was clean and well presented. Provided you don't mind perhaps having to try 3 things before finding one cooked to your liking there was generally always something. Local house wine (red Grabavac) was quite nice and light and not bad at 80Kn bottle. It was not necessary for the gents to dress in long pants, although several did.

You can access all areas except the pool, without having to negotiate steps. There are about 8 steps if going via the restaurant area (sliding door to open) and passing the outside garden tables. We went in September and never had problems getting a sunbed. The sun beds looked to have recently been replaced and were comfy enough and plentiful.

Out and About

Lovely coastal walks in both directions, Tucepi was shorter but more hilly and took about 1.5 hrs strolling. Access path behind last hotel Osejava along harbourside. Bus back was 10Kn and main road easily accessible - especially from far end of resort. Baska Voda was further but not as challenging, through some extremely pretty areas about 9km . We took 3 hrs going and 2 hrs returning as the heavens opened on us. Buses are available from outside Baska Voda marina for 15Kn and timetable posted nearby. Would highly recommend this pleasant walk. Just turn right outside hotel on promenade and keep walking - passes 3 smaller village areas but path always apparent. There is a small headland between the hotel's bay and harbour area called St Peters this is itself a lovely 30 mins stroll - suggest taking the clockwise route from side of harbour as going the otherway can be challenging at the steps on far side.

Mondays main market day at Split. bus station only 5 mins from hotel. Run every 30-45 mins cost 50Kn each way per person. Stops right on the harbour front not far from old town which is well worth visiting. There is a large Park area at the far end of the resort which we started walking up - took over 1 hr, all uphill, but the views were amazing. A welcome bar was situated mid way up, itself offering spectacular views over Split.

Did boat trips to Korcula 300Kn each - long day and took nearly 7 hours altogether on the boat. Also the common trip combining Jelsa on Hvar and Bol on Brac 200 Kn each - this was the better trip for me. Bol's beach Zlatni Rat is the much photographed headland. Lovely stroll from harbour - plenty of space and bars/refreshments. We took the boat called Voga which was fine. If you are a party animal take Makarski Padran ??? looks a bit like a scrap heap , with netting , but it was full every day and played party music. On hindsight I would take the Viganj yacht type boat - looked very smart and appeared to be quickest sailing.

Did Dubrovnik which was excellent, not only did we get to see more of the lovely scenery the Town itself was gorgeous - but far more expensive than Makarska as you would expect. Trips stopover for comfort break in Bosnia - supermarket prices cheaper due to lower taxes.
The trip to Omis and river ride up Cetina river was also a lovely day out which included a traditional Dalmation lunch called Peka - very nice yum yum.
Be aware we had trouble finding anyone to take credit cards to book our trips but luckily I had taken sufficient cash. The Hotel however will let you settle any account by card and there is a cash machine in hotel lobby.

If you are travelling with Jet 2 they had an excellent agent working on their behalf called Derek - he was a mine of unbiased info and very considerate to Jet2's guests and keen to ensure we all had a lovely time. He attended the hotel several days and ensured we all had our return transfer info in ample time.

In summary - I would definitely go back to this hotel and the area for sure. I did not find the area over expensive at all and hope this does not change when they join Europe next year.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed well appointed.

Super hotel, in a great location straight out of the hotel onto the beach. Beautiful clear blue water, great for swimming. Promenade lined with trees to give shade and lots of little stalls selling gifts and icecream etc. Very smart bars and restaurants overlooking the bay. Makarska is a lovely old town, beautiful architecture - very Italian looking, loads to do. Smashing walks along coast to Tucepi (took about an hour 15mins) and well worth the walk. You can also walk the other way along the coastline which is a super walk but only a few bars along the way.
We did a trip to Dubrovnik and another to Mosta, both well worth it.
The hotel is very clean and well kept. The rooms are spacious enough with a big wardrobe and large bathroom and kept really clean, with towels etc changed daily. Food quality is good but not very varied, especially the breakfasts but having said that we enjoyed what we had. Evening entertainment is not very good but we enjoyed an evening walk along the promenade and back for drinks sitting outside so we were very happy. We would be quite happy to go again, we travelled with Saga, and lots of guests were returning having been before. The indoor pool is Olympic sized and is lovely, only down side is the lack of a shallow end, also two hot tubs which were great to use. Had a manicure and several guests had massages, very enjoyable and reasonable price. Weather in September was fantastic, clear blue skies and temperature around 27degrees every day.

just returned from a weeks stay at the hotel Meteor, for our wedding anniversary. our first impression, immaculate hotel and beautiful location. non of our initial Thompson booking requests had been granted by the hotel such as pool view or large balcony. only when we complained to reception manager, we were offered our request, but at an extra cost! so pleased we decided to upgrade as the large balcony and assured double sun lounger made up for lack of space by the poolside. Hotel overrun by very rude German guests (at least 90%) encourage by the hotel staff, half my family are German so i was ashamed people could behave this way. We felt very unfairly treated especially by the waiting staff and the dining room manageress who was very abrupt and rude. We are both in our early 40s and expected a quiet, romantic location away from your typical Blackpool in the sun but this hotel had no atmosphere and was like gods waiting room(Saga 70 years above)! the few English we spoke to agreed with us.A smile or an occasional friendly approach would have made all the difference, such a shame as Makarska is beautiful place.
