This is a wonderful little gem of an island. Small but has it all, lovely streets, great people watching, lovely harbor, charming alleys with charing shops. It's a bit expensive by Croatian standards. There is one person here you need to know. Vinkica, the director of Fontana on the waterfront. She sells clothes and arranges any experience you might want to have in this area. She's like the mayor. She knows every one and is dedicated to making you have a good experience in Hvar. She arranges for us to have a wonderful private boat ride around the island and got to see beaches we would not have been able to see on our own.

Everything was excellent, the food, the service and, of course, the ambient. The fantastic view on Hvar sets a romantic atmosphere that a few can rival.

We took the "Port of Hvar" boat over to the island in the evening for dinner. It's free of charge if you eat at the restaurant. Just ask the guys in the port of hvar office for them to radio the boat to come pick you up. They are located next door to the Cape Diem bar. At this time of year it isn't necessary to make a reservation as its quiet. We sat outside looking at Hvar all lit up at night. It was quite romantic! The food was very good too. We ordered scampi and the veal cutlet. They both came with yummy grilled vegetables of capsicums, mushrooms, zucchini, and roast potatoes. We were both licking our fingers by the end of it. If you aren't a wine drinker like myself try the lemonade for something different. It's just squeezed lemon and water and they give you a spoon and a bowl of sugar. Lovely and refreshing with seafood.

Galesnik Island is directly across from the Harbour of Hvar, and is a lovely retreat from the hustle of Hvar. The day we were there, we were the only ones on the island with the exception of the caretakers, and enjoyed a relaxing swim, sun tanning and the resting in the hammocks supplied on the island. The island has great views of the harbour and all the hustle of the boats going by, yet it is a tranquil spot. We went there late afternoon for a swim, and then headed over to the restaurant to watch the sunset. Food is delicious and respects the traditional Croatian diet. All wines/beer are Croatian.

There is a free boat to and from the island supplied by the Port of Hvar Office.
