While there are many good things about Palmizana, visitors should be aware that there are some strong negatives as well. The "tropical gardens" consist of lots of cacti, the coastline is very rocky and there are very few bays; the rocks at sea level are also covered with sea urchins so it is hard to find a safe place to swim. Being quite remote, the water supply to the rooms and the electricity is temperamental, and check that the room you have booked does indeed have air-con - its only installed in some of the rooms. Again, some rooms also have only a small strip of flagstones outside, rather grandly described as a terrace... and did we mention the swarms of wasps?
In spite of all that, the family running the hotel are charming, friendly and incredibly helpful, and the food is fresh and well cooked. Not suitable for children and only go if you are happy to rough it.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Palmizana at the beginning of May for 2 nights. We were picked up by the speed boat from Hvar town. The island was gorgeous!!! The scenary and the clear water. We were greeted by Mario in his old Landrover. He had to hotwire it to get it started!

We stayed in the blue bungalow which was beautiful with a/c. All the windows had mosquito nets. We had dinner at the Restaurant near the bungalow which was wonderful and I would recommend the buzara. We also tried Toto's, they mainly do grilled fish and pizzas. We tried the grilled fish and calamari and couldn't fault it. The salads for 40kn are huge.

We also hired a boat for the day (350kn) and found a lovely secluded beach with clear blue water. Have to watch out for sea urchins on the rocks though.

The family running the resort are lovely. When we moored the boat at the wrong dock, one of the family came and helped us moved it. They are very relaxed and we just had to leave the boat moored at the harbour when we finished with it.

Really romantic setting. Would recommend it for anyone who wants a relaxed break with good food.

A small tip, if you are coming to Hvar from Split, make sure you get your ticket for the 1400 catamaran the day before as it can be sold out by 0830 on the day of travel. If you are a foot passenger on the car ferry to Stari Grad, make sure you organise transport before or check bus times as when we arrived, there were no bus awaiting and had to get a taxi.

Stayed at Palmizana Resort located on small (3.5 x .5km) island just off town of Hvar for 4 nights in June '06. The whole experience of being in such a beautiful location was wonderful. Would recommend particularly for romantic getaways....

Found resort through Times online guide. On arrival in Hvar town you are picked up from the dock next to the bars by the resort's little speed boat. 15 minute ride over to the island, then a short ride in an impossibly old Landrover from the Island marina to the resort itself. Family run, with Romina in charge but healthy input from mother Dagmar and assistance from rest of family and other staff. Hard to describe in detail but basically resort built on slope above beach/ bay amongst pine trees/ cactus/ carpet of wild rosemary. The smell is incredible! Accommodation mixture of villas/ appartments - I stayed in appartment without a/c (didin't need anyway) and was perfectly comfortable but don't expect 5*. The island only got electricity last year!

Life in resort revolves around the restaurant. Family holds court in the morning at table next to kitchen - very handy if you need to ask/ organise anything. Food is great and service is incredibly fast considering the number of people they serve. This is due to popularity of bay and restaurant by yachties on charter. Even in June it was pretty busy - I bet in August it must be crazy, probably like the rest of Croatia. Answer is to eat early (before 8.30) to beat the rush up the hill. There is also a restaurant down at the beach called Toto's - did not try but great location. The other restaurant on the beach (name?) is nothing to do with the resort.

Walk across island through the pine woods along a small footpath to great beaches and coves. Not alone as Hvar ferries deposit tourists on island from 10 onwards, but it's possible to find almost deserted spots. 45 mins walk to small fishing village with couple of small restaurants. Rent a small boat with 5hp outboard on the back from the resort and potter round the island - can also take it to Hvar for dinner but keep an eye on the time - be back before dark as it is very hard to find your way around after sundown.

There is also an interesting gallery and shop selling paintings/ jewellery/ local products.

Can get ride to town in morning with resort boat - also managed to hitch ride on yacht leaving island marina to Hvar town. Water taxis available but cost approx euro 25 each way.

Hvar - see fort (great view) and drive round island. Lavander flowering in June was stunning. Abandoned village of Humac very interesting.

Hvar would be great for mountain biking, if a little energetic.
