“Not as bad as the reviews say”
Reviewed September 15, 2010

We stayed here for 2 nights, and overall our experience was good.
The Pros:
*Location - right on the harbour. The ferries literally stop right outside the hotel.
*The rooms were decorated in a very modern/funky way
*Nice big and open bathroom (the openess/lack of privacy didnt worry us as much as other guests).
*Use of the pool at the Adriana - fabulous view from the terrace!
The Cons:
*Breakfast is very basic, and lacking decent food.
*The open shower meant that water goes all over the bathroom floor
*Some outside noise disturbed as at night
*On our first day we were only given one bath towel, and the second, we had no bath towels at all - took awhile before staff came with replacements.

We chose this hotel in january after reading the reviews and soon realised we had made a big mistake. We were told by the travel agents as well as reading in the holiday brochure that we could use the facilities of the sister hotels if desired. We chose the Riva for it's location and mainly adult clientele thinking we could use the swimming pool at the Amphora as promised. Unfortunately when we enquired at the Amphora we were told it was too busy and therefore not allowed to enter. On our last day September 3rd I returned to see if the hotel was less busy, to be told I could use the amenaties at a cost of 200 kunas per person per day.
The cleanliness was fair. Finding a beige tablet on the marble top in the bathroom obviously left by the previous guests made me wonder what else had been missed. I used one of the glasses to drink water through night which was never cleaned. I used the spare pillow and after a week my husband decided he needed another pillow so used the cushions on the bed. It would have been appreciated if seeing this in the room staff provided us with spare pillows.
Unfortunately when you did ask the staff for small requests such as coffee at breakfast you are looked at with disdain from the male members of staff. I must say we thought the lady at breakfast was wonderful, she looked after us well unlike her male collegues. Breakfast was a big dissapointment. The hot food was only hot on one occasion. There was no fresh fruit juices just fruit flavoured drinks and a choice of two at that. The breakfast menu was limited and whilst staying there for two weeks you began to dred the monotony of breakfast.
I agree with other reviews that the layout of the rooms are poor. I can only assume the toilets enclosed in glass panels/doors on two sides were an after thought to provide a small amount of privacy when accessing the toilet as due to the concave shape of the bathroom walls it would have been impossible to put door on the bathroom full stop. The position of the glass screen made it very difficult to use the towel rail unless you're 6 ft tall so towels tended to be left in a heap. Linen was changed regularly and always clean.
One evening we had heavy rain and like most other guests decided to eat in the bar. The Bar manager worked very hard in exeptional circumstances to make everyones evening as agreeable as possible. Seats were limited. It was amazing to see how selfish some people were taking up tables for an hour and a half with one drink, then moving on as they were not resident at the hotel. The food here was good and surprisingly good value for money.
After staying at the three star hotel Lapad in Dubrovnick last year where we were treated very well the hotel Riva has left us with a bitter taste.

Dear Madam/Sir,
Thank you for staying at Riva, hvar yacht harbour hotel, Croatia’s first member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World organization, and for taking the time to reflect on your stay.
In reference to pool usage, we have made it possible for our guests to use the outdoor pool at hotel Amfora out of the high season (which additionally depends on hotel occupancy) and indoor pool with rooftop terrace overlooking the yacht harbour at hotel Adriana. Hotel Adriana is conveniently located in the centre of the town close to hotel Riva and it grants free access to pool facilities for guests staying at hotel Riva at all times. Our breakfast is served every morning with a choice of healthy products, seasonal fruits, yogurts and muesli, and we also offer cold and hot buffet, all in line with 4-star properties' categorization standards.
Hotel Riva offers 46 rooms and 8 suites, ranging in size from 16 sqm to 35 sqm, with diverse room layouts that allow for desired privacy. All the rooms and suites have undergone Small Luxury Hotels of the World inspection and have fulfilled their criteria.
In the end, we believe that absolutely no compromise should be made in attending to our guests’ needs and we apologize for any inconvenience the lack of service has caused to you during your stay. It is very important to us that our guests leave the hotel with good impressions and a desire to return. We hope to welcome you to hotel Riva again in the future!

With best regards,
Riva, hvar yacht harbour hotel team

This hotel has been recently remodeled and is new and modern. Sadly, the rooms layouts are odd such as a toilet behind see through glass - not pleasant even for the closest couples!

The service was not poor - we were told housekeeping was too busy to do our room one day, they ran out of clean towels and we had to wait 2 hours for laundry (a regular problem according to front desk), and our "city view" was a big brick wall.

I had a great time in Hvar, but wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone!!

During our stay, we stayed in 2 different rooms, one with a harbour view and one with a terrace at the back. I would definitely recommend the room with a terrace. The sea view room was very noisy and I had to sleep with the TV on to drown out the noise so I would not recommend a room facing the front of the hotel. Friendly staff and perfect location, we got off the ferry and the hotel was right in front of us. Also enjoyed spending our evenings having cocktails at the hotel’s restaurant on the terrace and the food was pretty decent and reasonably priced. We had little issues with both rooms we stayed in, sea view room was noisy, Wifi didn’t really work and it was tiny– there wasn’t even room for both our small suitcases. On the other hand the second room (superior room with terrace) was larger, however, there was no door to the shower or toilet, in fact we had no door to the bathroom so there was absolutely no privacy and the bathroom got soaked every time we showered. Apart from that I was happy with my stay at the hotel. I did love the fact that we could use the pool at the Adriana Hotel which had an amazing pool deck overlooking the harbour.

Let me start by saying this- we'd read a lot of the Riva's reviews on this site, and dismissed the negative ones as people who simply had had a bad experience in a perfectly nice hotel. Don't make the same mistake. The Riva is a perfectly nice hotel. It's cool, it's clean, it's boutique-y, and It's right in the middle of the action. But if you stay there, chances are, you will have a bad experience. The staff is so incredibly ineffective and incompetent that that's virtually a given.

We chose the Riva since it was smaller than Amfora, had gotten slightly better reviews, and the website said that guests at Riva had access to Amfora's pool. This turned out not to be the case once we arrived. (Since it was "high season".) We had could use the pool at the Adriana (another sister hotel which was much more expensive). This was a very nice pool, but still, truth in advertising.

We requested a room in the back of the hotel and one with as enclosed a bathroom as was possible. (We knew that, inexplicably, the designer of the hotel had gone for an open floor plan in many of the rooms. We're not a particularly Puritanical couple, but we figured there were certain things that we didn't want to see each other do. This was why we'd requested a room with a door around the toilet.) We received a confirmation email with our requests printed on top. We knew we were getting in off the last ferry and didn't want to be given the last room in the hotel, so we emailed them that day reminding them that we would be arriving late. They emailed back very nicely that it wasn't a problem and not to worry.

The Riva is right in the middle of the old town of Hvar. Which means that cars can drive by it. Which is great. That's part of what makes the place so cool to visit. However, this also means that we had to park 15 minutes away (at the Amfora, which, incidentally, looked totally gorgeous) and at 12:30 am on a Saturday, we had to drag our luggage 15 minutes over cobblestones and through crowds of partying people. There was a vague reference to golf cart service between the hotels, but we discovered the next day that A: it didn't run at night and, B: it was between Riva and a different hotel.

We arrived at the hotel and checked in. The desk clerk was perfectly nice. No one helped with the bags, but no biggie, it was the middle of the night. We arrived at the room, which not only had no wall around the bathroom, it had no solid walls at all. The shower was open to the toilet. The toilet was open to the bed, save for a transparent piece of glass. There was literally a view of the store across the way from the toilet. We called down and asked to change rooms. We were told it was fully booked, but to try again in the morning. Not a problem. We had a drink and went to bed.

The next morning, we went down to breakfast (which I must admit was very tasty, and is served on their very pretty terrace right by the water). I spoke to the new man behind the desk, showed him the reservation and explained our situation. Switching rooms wouldn't be a problem, he assured us. Check back in 15 minutes. 15 minutes later, another new clerk was on duty. He had no idea what we were talking about, but he said if we came back in half an hour the manager would be there and she would switch us, no problem. We came back in half an hour. Yet another new person was behind the front desk. We again explained our problem. He said that he couldn't do anything without the manager, but she would be there any minute. He also said that all the rooms were identical, so switching wouldn't help. We'd seen pictures, we knew this wasn't the case. While we were waiting for the manager, several other guests came up to the front desk with problems, all of which were dismissed as unsolvable until the manager arrived. We waited for about 2 hours, until noon, at which point we decided to get on with our vacation and enjoy the afternoon. I showered and got water all over the room since there were no walls and no curtain. We left, and the clerk said that he would let the manager know our situation when she got in.
We got back to the hotel around 5- no manager. The same desk clerk who we'd talked to for an hour earlier that morning had no idea who we were. (This is small hotel, by the way.) He said that the manager had been there in the morning and we'd missed her. There was nothing he could do, he said. He absolutely didn't have the authority to switch our room. We reminded him not-so-politely that we'd waited all morning, and pretty much demanded that he do something at which point he...clicked a button or two on the computer and switched the room.

If it sounds like we were being unreasonable, let me stress that Riva bills itself as a 5 star hotel and charges something like 260 Euros per night.

This room they switched us to had a door to both the toilet and the shower, which was a nice improvement, but it was in the front of the hotel and right by the elevator so it was extremely noisy.

They forgot to place the wake up call which we'd requested for the next morning. We asked about it when we came downstairs, and the man at the desk insisted he had placed it and no one had answered. We looked in the book, however, and the wrong room number had been written down.

The manager did eventually put in an appearance. She was extremely nice. (As was, I must say, every other person we had dealt with thus far. Extremely nice. Extremely ineffective.) We brought up the room/wake up call situation and she apologized. My husband suggested that she do something to compensate for some of the hassle. We ended up with a free drink, but only because he asked for it directly.

I stress again that throughout our 3 day stay, more than one incident like this occurred to other guests at the hotel. People we met along the way also had similar stories to share. Unless you're a party animal, don't waste your money. If you want boutique, try the Park Hvar, or even one of the Sobe. You'll get the same amount of space, and can use the Riva's terrace/restaurants just the same as if you were staying there. It's clean, and the design concept is cool, but unless you can't live without a giant poster of Audrey Hepburn over your head as you sleep, stay somewhere else.

Dear Madam,
Before dealing with the delicate matters that you have brought up in your review, we would like to thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We also thank you for giving us the opportunity to publicly clear any misunderstanding to those who read about Riva and its hospitality.

Riva, hvar yacht harbour hotel is a 4-star property and it offers 46 rooms and 8 suites, ranging in size from 16 sqm to 35 sqm, all of which feature cable/satellite/pay TV, mini-bar, electronic in-room safe, smart card access key, room and bathroom amenities and daily housekeeping service. All our rooms and suites have undergone Small Luxury Hotels of the World inspection and have fulfilled their criteria.
With regards to room distribution, we are doing our best to accommodate all our guests to the rooms which are available at the time of check-in. In cases when the guests wish to change rooms, we make all efforts to assign new accommodation when hotel occupancy allows for it, which is not possible to do quite often in times of high season. Due to increased volume of the guests checking-in and checking-out on daily basis, rooms can not be changed without authorization from the front desk manager. In reference to detected shortcomings in your room, please be informed that all technical issues are handled daily with high priority and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. With regards to service quality, we believe this is one of the points where no compromise should be made. Rest assured that this kind of matter is dealt with highest priority.

For the guests of hotel Riva who arrive to Hvar by car, we have ensured free parking at hotel Bodul, located 5 minutes of pleasant walk by the sea. Our staff collects the luggage at the parking place and takes it to the hotel, while the guests walk to the hotel, as driving is not allowed in the centre of the town.
As hotel Riva does not have pool facilities, we have made it possible for our guests to use the outdoor pool at hotel Amfora out of the main season and indoor pool with rooftop terrace overlooking the yacht harbour at hotel Adriana. Hotel Amfora is the largest hotel on the island, with over 300 rooms and it is fully booked in peak season, so the pool facilites are available to hotel guests only. On the other hand, hotel Adriana is located in the centre of the town close to hotel Riva and it grants free access to pool facilities for guests staying at hotel Riva at all times.

Once again, we appreciate your feedback and hope to see you back in Riva again in the future!

For any further inquiries, please feel free to contact us at any time.

With best regards,
Hotel Riva Management

We stayed for 2 nights as part of a honeymoon trip around Croatia.

The location is very central and the decor is modern and clean. Our room had a balcony and a great seaview. However, as most people have highlighted the rooms are small with nowhere to put large suitcases. Also having a glass door for the toilet is weird and needs rethinking.
Breakfast was average and I was expecting better. Also it was the only place in Croatia that we stayed at where English breakfast tea wasnt available.
In the evening the hotel is noisy so if you are a light sleeper then I wouldnt stay here. It wasnt a big issue for us as we were out at night, but there are a lot of party boats moored up outside, with music playing until sunrise.

Small changes could improve this hotel with more attention to detail. The evening music in the bar downstairs was consistently bad, which for a stylish hotel was surprising. One morning over breakfast a Christmas carol CD was playing - none of the staff noticed or cared until it was pointed out that it was August. Also we needed a iron one night but there isnt one available, and were told that you have to pay for someone to iron your clothes for you.

Overall standards could be raised in this hotel given the prices that are charged. However, it is sleek, stylish and the the location is great if you want a lively night out.

I've been to Hvar serveral time and also have staid at serveral of the Sunciany Hvar hotels. The Amfora, Adriana and this time we went back to the Riva.

Yes, the rooms are a joke. They look really cool in pictures, but you have about the same about of space there as you did on your flight getting there. The showers funky design has more water going out under the door than into the drainage, but I guess that is how "art" hotels do it.

The old Roots restaurant has been replaced with a decent Sushi bar. And there food there is good, but I did miss the best of Hvar selection that Roots used to have.

I do not mind the small room, but the lack of sound insulation will drive you nuts!
The party boats anchor up just in-front of the hotel and there will be up to 6 of them with their own sound system and loads partying people.

The Carpe Diem crew has moved their party onto Stipanska at 01:30 so get the full roar of the crowd waiting for the taxi bats for about an hour. Very good quality drunken ramblings must be expected and there is best off around 06 AM as the crowd comes back from the island. If you have been sleeping since then, it will end at 6.30 no matter what, as the foghorns of the ferry blast 3 times for no reason other than to wake up the drunken past out party people sleeping in the Riva Yatch Harbor hotels lounge area.

The breakfast is fair, noting special about, never was able to try any of the warm items, as there was never anything in them.

As for feeling welcome as a guest to the Riva, I had my worst experience EVER with the management at this hotel. I am not going write in here what happened and even when I was there I asked to speak to the manager and he/she did not even bother replying to me. I've been a guest with Suncani Hvar 5 times and I have never been more brushed off or felt more unwanted as a guest in any hotel. If any management reads this. You can contact me directly.

Also please do not disturb the front Desk or the concierge to much, they have other more important things to do on Facebook.

Hvar is a beautiful place, but its turning into a bad copy of late 90's Ibiza or Aya Napa.
So if you want to drink around the clock, its probably good.

As a romantic getaway, its not.

Dear Sir,
First of all, please allow us to express our gratitude for staying at Sunčani Hvar Hotels properties when visiting Hvar. We would like also to thank you for staying at Riva, hvar yacht harbour hotel, Croatia's first member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. We are most grateful that you have found time to provide us with your observations.
Hotel Riva is located in the centre of Hvar town, in the harbour, which is a very busy area in high season in summer months. As the hotel is located right next to Carpe Diem, which is famous for its summer parties, noise from the outside may disturb the rooms with view of the harbour during the night. Riva's location and design are mostly tailored to the guests who enjoy Hvar's dynamic nightlife, but we strongly believe that Hvar town and Riva offer diverse range of cultural experiences which guests can explore while staying on the island.
Our rooms range from 16sqm to 35sqm in size and they are all equipped with modern room and bathroom amenities. In reference to detected shortcomings in your room, please be informed that all technical issues are handled daily with high priority and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
With regards to service attitude from our staff, we believe that absolutely no compromise should be made in attending to our guests’ needs. It is very important to us that our guests leave the hotel with good impressions and a desire to come back again in the future. As we do not have access to your direct contact details, please send us your further comments to complaints@suncanihvar.com as we would really appreciate to hear more about your experiences of Riva, hvar yacht harbour hotel.

With best regards,
