“Hvar is great - this hotel is not”
Reviewed August 16, 2008

If you're planning to go to Hvar - don't hesitate, go now! It's a really beautiful town and the Croatian archipelago is great. We will definitely go back there someday. However, next time around we will not stay at Hotel Croatia. The hotel is ok, but not good value. Both the staff and the hotel itself feels old and tired.

The pros
The location is good, just a short walk into town and close to the water.
The rooms are quiet and clean

The cons
The rooms are really dark and has not been renovated in a very, very long time
The breakfast was awful
Bad value for money.

Once we found the hotel, through the narrow streets, we parked under the trees, and strolled into the reception, which was luke warm. It's actually quite dark inside, the rooms are simple, but they've certainly seen better days, but the aircon does work. It's not as bright, clean modern as other hotels, but it's a great location. Just walk down through the garden and you're on the beach. Again, pebbles and concrete, but overlooking the bay, as the sun goes down was special. It takes about 15minutes to walk to Hvar town, where all the action takes place. The hotel restaurant was actually surprisingly good- try the 'black quid risotto' amazing, and see if you can get the stern myopic waiter to smile, I dare you.

The hotel is in a super location with great views. The gardens in part were pretty but in others were unkempt. The staff were an unhappy bunch, initially we thought language was a problem but then were told that the owners had problems, it was no excuse for rudeness, bad temper & poor service. The evening meals were not good, fortunately we had not anticipated eating in every night.
According to the literature there is a private beach, there is not it is shared with everyone who wants to use it and hotel geusts along with other users are required to pay for the use of sunbeds, there are no brollies.
The Island is beautiful and well worth a visit.

I stayed in hotel Croatia last summer, had a really good time, I found the hotel quite charming , it is an old hotel , looks rather like a big mansion converted into a hotel. OK it is not 5star but you can sit in the garden , have your breakfast on the terrace overlooking the garden/sea. Staff were very helpful/nice and their rates are cheap. I rather stay here than in those factorystyle hotels that i have seen in croatia with 800rooms or more. This hotel is ideal if you are travelling around and visit Hvar for a few days, would stay here again next time

We arrived in Hvar in the afternoon after enjoying a beautiful ferry-ride from Split. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the town, so is free from noise from the harbour, and offers some amazing views. Our room was very basic - the bed comfortable but the bathroom was appalling. Our shower actually fell out of the wall when I was using it!
We had to leave early in the morning to catch another ferry, so we checked out around 7am. The hotel information stated that breakfast etc was open from 6.30 onwards, however when we arrived downstairs the staff were just setting up the buffet so we had to leave before our breakfast was ready. When trying to check out, no-one was available on reception. A cleaner had to call the receptionist who rushed in 10 minutes later - it was clear she had just rushed from home out of bed!
When we return to Hvar (which we definitely will - it's a beautiful town) we wouldn't stay here again. It's a peaceful spot, but the rooms and the service just aren't up to it!

I recently spent two nights with a friend at the Hotel Croatia on Hvar. The location is great. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the main harbour in Hvar. The old building has great potential, but it was a little run-down. That would have fine if it wasn't for the exceptionally poor customer service at the resort. Everywhere else in Croatia, we had great service. The hotel is also very diffcult to find by car. There is an initial sign directing you towards a few hotels, but they are missing a sign to determine which way to turn off this road.

I must be getting very spoilt as, despite the hotel's recent cheap and cheerful refurbishment, I found the rooms still rather basic, with no air conditioning. However, the beds were comfortable and the fact that the hotel has a terrace for outdoor dining and a garden with swing chairs and table tennis were much valued. The cost was also reasonable.
It should be noted that Hvar does not really have any beaches (other than a small and crowded one by the Hotel Amfora) and no-one bothered to mention that you have to be careful not to tread on the ubiquitous sea urchins as you make your way from the rocks down a ladder into the sea. The island also suffers from a lack of sunbathing space.
The nightlife and outdoor cafés/restaurants seem to be the island's main attraction and it is teeming with young people from all around the world. Hotel Croatia would be fine for a short stay, but the Suncanihvar website might also be worth checking out.
