Got the taxi over to pakleni Islands. Palmizana beach. Not sandy like uk but rocky. Very very busy probably heavenly out of season but just too busy. Nice ride over but there is a good 10 to 15 min walk on other side to be aware of. Lots of sea urchins too so wear water shoes. Enjoyed it but probably wouldn't go again.

We asked around and 500 kuna for a 5hp (fuel included) tub seems to be the going price, perhaps you can negotiate but we didn't try. Ended up getting a 20hp for 900 with the idea of circumnavigating the islands. There are lots of coves to put the boat and eat or swim - find one you like and relax. There are hardly any people on the more western beaches.

Apparently the day we went was a bad choice cause the wind was in the worst direction. Coming round the north western tip was hairy in a small and underpowered boat due to the rough sea, so maybe something to check if you want to go that far. The south side of the island (where most of the recommended swimming spots are) was fine.

You can take a water taxi to a different beach/island each day. They are cheap and you find the taxis at the Hvar harbour. Just check to see where you want to go. You can also rent a boat and explore the islands in a day. On each island there are different beaches, restaurants and bars. If you take a bean bag or lounge chair you need to pay a small fee but you can also just bring a towel and put it on one of the rocks or beach. If you need some chilled out music head to Carpe Diem or if you want to get away from it all you can find an empty rock in one of the coves to just kick back.

This is by far the best activity in Hvar (if you're not into clubbing!).

You can visit these tiny islands in a water taxi, but unless you are of a really nervous disposition you ought to just rent your own boat and drive yourself.

The process of renting a small boat with an outboard motor is really quite simple. I was expecting to have to fill out forms, leave a big deposit and show a boating license. However on Hvar, you can just turn up - there are loads of rental stands. They give you some rudimentary instructions and send you on your merry way.

I nearly mowed down some swimmers when I first pulled away. I soon realised my 15 year old son was far more competent at the helm and handed over to him. But seriously, it really is dead easy after a few minutes, although your first attempt at docking can be a bit hairy.

The boat gives you the freedom to explore the various beaches and swim where you like. Absolutely sublime experience! Make sure you bring masks and snorkels for the full effect.

I'd suggest getting up early, take a picnic , lots of drinks, and make a day of it to get full value for your money. I paid 500 Kn - I suspect I was fleeced, so try shopping around the day before you go. Don't forget your driver's license as they will want some security.

Have fun!

Milna Beach on the nearest island to Hvar was great. Lovely little beach with a great bar/konobo right on it. We sunbathed on large outdoor beanbags (the ultimate sunbathing experience). The water was lovely and it only cost £4 per head for the taxi boat.
