My husband and I visited Hvar whilst on a trip around Croatia in Sept 09 and it was one of our favourite places. The island is absolutely beautiful and our stay at Jagoda's guest house made the trip even more memorable!

Jagoda is a fantastic host and, as other people have said, is incredibly helpful. After climbing the stairs up to the guest house, a cold on arrival was much appreciated. These small touches really make you feel welcome. It's great to have someone on hand to advise you about places to go etc, as there are a few companies on the harbour trying to sell boat trips.

Our room was spacious with a large terrace that had beautiful views. We had a kitchen that we didn't really use but it was useful to have a fridge to store bottled water etc. The bathroom was quite basic but everything was very clean and all in working order.

The restaurants on the harbour all looked lovely, but we particularly liked the one which was projecting Breakfast at Tiffany's on to the outside wall whilst the football was being shown for the men! Unfortunately we can't remember the name of it (not very helpful!) but it's one of the large ones on the front near to where the ferries dock.

We'd definitely go back to Hvar, and would love to stay for longer next time.

We stayed two nights in the J&A Bracanovic House. Jagoda picked us up from the ferry and gave us the run down on the island on the way back to the house. We stayed in the apartment, which was great value for money, quite spacious and with a little terrace that has seaviews. There are a few stairs to get the waterfront, however I think that is typical of Hvar.

Excellent!!! I’ve stayed in numerous guesthouses/ hostels in the past but this is definitely one of the best!
I have just returned from holiday in Hvar and can’t rave about Jagoda’s Guesthouse enough. The guesthouse has excellent sea views and a pretty terrace. The rooms were clean and we were lucky enough to have a private balcony. The communal kitchen had everything we needed. Our friends rented the larger apartment downstairs which had a self- contained kitchen and a garden terrace which was great for having drinks before venturing out for dinner. It was extremely hot when we visited so it was great to have air con in our rooms!
The guesthouse is situated on the hillside. When we first arrived, I was concerned about the walk down the hill to the main square. However, it’s a lovely and very scenic walk and it only takes just over 5 minutes.
Jagoda was lovely. She was very friendly, met us from the catamaran and gave us a lift to the guesthouse. She always on hand to advice about activities etc... She suggested a couple of restaurants to try- we did and they were excellent.
I had no expectations of Hvar as I do not know anyone that has ever visited the island. I was really impressed! The weather was great- apparently the guide books are right about it being the sunniest island on the Adriatic- the sea’s clear and great for water sports and swimming/ snorkelling. There are no sandy beaches so it’s best to hire a sun- lounger for sunbathing. The fortress is well worth a visit (but not in the midday heat) and has great views of the harbour.
Carpe Diem wasn’t so great- may be go there for a cocktail or two but there are much better bars in the town. Saying that though, we went to Carpe Diem’s Full Moon party on a neighbouring island which was brilliant!!!

We were looking for a cheap and cheerful place to spend a quiet fortnight in the sun after a series of increasingly expensive trips to the Eurozone, and Jagoda and Ante's guesthouse turned out to be the answer to everything we were looking for.

The guesthouse is positioned up the hill five minutes from the harbour (there are a lot of steps, which is something to bear in mind for the unfit or for those with limited mobility) in a quiet residential area, and our room had amazing views out to sea over the Pakleni islands. We had a private bathroom and air conditioning (I believe there is air con in every room), which was essential given the July heat combined with the daily walk up the stairs!

The best thing about this accommodation, however, is the service and generosity of Jagoda and her husband. We were greeted with ice cold beers after lugging our suitcases up the hill (Jagoda will pick you up if you ring her - we stupidly didn't!) and in the course of the two weeks were treated to ripe melons from their own field, which we ate on our private balcony looking out to sea.

In short, this is somewhere we would recommend wholeheartedly for those looking for an excellent value base in the Mediterranean - Hvar is a stunning island, and this is a great place to experience it from.

Jagoda and Ante's home is truly a hidden gem. Both picked us up at the bus station to make sure we found their house okay. Jagoda took us on a tour and made us feel right at home. The room was great for the price and location. There was a common kitchen to use, lines to dry clothing, air conditioning, a small fridge in the room, and a nice sized balcony (ours had a partial sea view). Though there are stairs (and there are ways around them), the location is very central. It does not take long to walk to the town, water, grocery store, or the great beaches. Jagoda is very kind and has a lot of great advice. She was wonderful to talk to and we learned a lot about her and Hvar by taking every opportunity we could to chat. We really enjoyed our stay and will be going back sometime in the future!

We stayed at the Jagoda and Ante Bracanovic House for 3 nights in August. Since it was peak season we booked in advance and our room was ready when we arrived despite it being very early in the morning (7.30am). It is only a 5 minute walk from the port and not too hard to find though we did have to ask for directions as we walked too far along the waterfront. The stairs are not too bad but probably not suitable to anyone who has trouble climbing stairs. The neighbourhood is quiet and residential so you won't be woken by drunk people wandering around in the early hours of the morning (we saw quite a few of these while waiting for a 6am boat to Split).

We went for one of the cheaper rooms which was on the bottom level sharing a bathroom and kitchen with one other room. There was also a patio for drying stuff outside the room. The room was good and the bathroom clean. Jagoda (the woman who runs it) was friendly and helpful and full of advice about Hvar.

Overall it's a very good deal for Hvar which seemed rather expensive and is good for people who like to book in advance.

  • Liked — Price, friendlyness
  • Disliked — Climbing the steps when tired (this wouldn't put me off staying again though)
