The booming bass from the neighbouring nightclub vibrating through our poolview room between midnight and 4am really spoiled this as a claimed 'tranquil' destination. Reception staff shrugged shoulders, "there's nothing we can do to help." So with two more nights to go we've been out to buy ear plugs. Be sure to pack yours too.

Dear guest,

First of all, we would like to thank you for staying at Amfora hvar grand beach resort, and for taking the time to provide genuinely useful observations about your stay with us.

Hotel Amfora is located in the quiet, residential area, 10 minutes walk from the centre of the town by the sea. Hotel itself fully respects noise restrictions and music regulations. Music from the downtown club, which is opened the whole night, usually does not spread towards the objects located by the sea. If the noise level is higher than town's laws and regulations, our night staff are instructed to contact local authorities.

Once again, thank you for taking your time and providing us with your most helpful insight.

For any further inquiries, please feel free to contact us at any time.

With best regards,
Hotel Amfora management

We stayed for 5 nights and had a great time at the hotel. Its a family friendly hotel (and positioned as one) so don't be surprised to see and hear children everywhere. Its also a big hotel so if you are expecting boutique hotel qualities then you will be disappointed. We wanted a good quality, well located hotel in a reasonable price bracket. We paid for an executive room with a sea view - very worthwhile - the sea view is amazing. The rooms aren't big but are well designed and perfectly good for a holiday where you are going to spend more time out of the room than in anyway.

The staff were very weloming and friendly, we packed a lot into our few days there and they were great with helping us plan. Location wise you couldn't do better - a 10 minute waterside walk into the town meant everything was accessible yet you were far enough away to not be affected by any noise from the clubs and partying. Sunbeds are at a premium - but there were always plenty at the beach at the front of the hotel. Definitely recommend hiring a moped and exploring the island and finding some more secluded beaches. Another great way of doing that was to hire a speed boat for the day too - very easy and well worth it if the budget allows.

Day time and/or dinner at Bonj le Bain is a must - and conveniently close to the hotel for a quieter night. Itsthe best spot for sundowners while reclining on the hammocks or bed-sofas there - and their silent disco is unusual and very amusing.

For dinners in town definitely get off the main drag - the streets running parrallel to the main square (and on the left if looking at the main church) offer excellent food, interesting and attractive al fresco venues with great ambiance.

Hvar is not a cheap destination - some bars were London prices and dinner for two with a bottle of wine was frequently £75+, but the food was fresh, beautifully cooked and charmingly provided - so if you are looking for a great destination but not worried about spending a little then its an amazing place to go!

Ok , so you arrive on the Ferry and get to the hotel around lunchtime , check into the hotel and look forward to an afternoon relax around the pool , bad luck , no chance of a sunbed until after 4pm . So the next day you get up early ,have a nice breakfast and stroll down to the pool at 9.00am , bad luck again , all of the sunbeds are already taken . This is the pool timetable , if you want a particular spot or heaven forbid all your family to sit together then get your belongings on your sunbeds by 7.00am, at 8.00 the towel hut opens with a long queue forming , by 9.00am the beds have long gone . And the punchline is that the hotel still allows people from outside the hotel to pay £25 to join the 'hunt a sunbed' competition . Pure greed on the hotels part , call me old fashioned but if you are paying £250+ a night i expect a sunbed !! that said It was fun watching new guests wander round the pol looking for sunbeds every day . The hotel has two main advantages (hench my rating) , the great pool (and slide) + the location which provides great views and is a easy walk into splendid Hvar town . Rooms are very small but modern and well designed , however the very odd square toilet is a trendy step too far ,and the shower does flood the bathroom . Staff are ok . So overall a good resort hotel but they HAVE to make more sunbeds available during peak months . Oh and I forgot when you get back to your room and find 2 bottles of water don't think its free , they charge them to your room bill whether you drink them or not , As I said pure greed

Dear guest,

Thank you for staying at Amfora, hvar grand beach resort and for taking the time to reflect on your stay.

In reference to hotel pool usage, please note that our cascading pool is the only large-size pool with water slides for children on the island of Hvar. The pool capacities were designed to fit the maximum number of sunchairs on both pool levels, keeping the necessary free space between the loungers. The guests are asked not to reserve the sunchairs by leaving the towels on them, without staying at the pool at the same time, as this lowers down the number of available sunchairs. This is the reason why we do not allow usage of the pool to external guests in high season. Such incidents were an exception to the rule and are not in line with the hotel policies.
The hotel does not have the policy of charging the costs which the guests have not incurred. While staying at the hotel, you were free to check the costs charged to your room at any time at our front desk. With regards to the bottles of water in rooms, they have labels with price stated on them.

In the end, we are truly grateful for your constructive and objective observations and hope you will be back to Hvar again in the future.

For any further inquiries, please feel free to contact us at any time.

With best regards,
Hotel Amfora management

We had reservations at a different hotel (the Palace) but when we went to check in at the Palace, we found that there was no air conditioning & the so called "sea view suite" consisted of 1 medium size room with a sofa sleeper & if you peeked through the window you might see some sea. The lady at the front desk (Maria, I believe) was terrific when we explained that the room would not work for us & she called around & found a room at the Amfora.....thank goodness! The rooms at the Amfora were decorated in a "mod" decor & we were fortunate that there was a cancellation so we could get 2 rooms. The people working there were very nice, the hotel was extremely clean & the pools were great! It was less than 10 minute walk to the center of town & breakfast was good. There was free parking a couple of blocks away.

We stayed at the Amfora for 9 days and here are my tips/advices:-
1. Amfora may state that it is a 4* hotel but in reality, it should be a 2* at best.
2. The receptionists are downright unhelpful and sometimes rude but it is understable as some of the guests were so incredibly obnoxious and horrible.
3. Breakfast is average but there is always fresh fruits around.
4. If possible (financially speaking), get an ocean-facing room because most of the 'park view' rooms are facing the main road/other people's houses.
5. The bathroom is small and it is flooded quite easily after a shower because of the glass shower door.
6. Room is small but then you are not meant to stay inside the whole day...well, unless you are honeymooners.
7. The water bottles in the room (separate from the minibar) are not free. It costs 22kuna each and you can get that bottle for 4kuna from any supermarkets.
8. Try to get a scooter so you can explore 'Stari Grad' and other nearby areas. It is quite easy to hire a scooter but don't hire it via the hotel as you may not get a decent scooter. Go directly to the main town and hire one there.
9. Get some swimming shoes. Trust me, it is a must
10. For nice places to eat, there are quite a number of places just behind the church in the main square, which are less crowded and beautiful croatian food.
11. Ask for table wine (red / white). It comes in a carafe of 0.5l or 1l and during my 9 days on the island, I've not had one bad red table wine. Didn't try the white as it doesn't look cold enough.
