Found this place off the main drag by recommendation from our hotel. Not disappointed with great food, atmosphere and service. Would return again.

We ate at four different restaurants in Hvar. Macondo would be rated three out of four. The staff is pleasant enough, and some dishes (boiled prawns and fried calamari) were good. But others were curiously mediocre. Think risotto with the shellfish still in the shells or very oily pasta. The prices were *very* high, up to $40/entree. We had better meals and better value at other, even more upscale, restaurants in Hvar. We travel regularly and try to eat well and locally when possible. Macondono failed.

After a long morning of shopping and checking out the sites of Hvar (of which there are many) my wife and I were looking for a good place to have lunch. On the recommendation of one the shop owners (always a potential conflict of interest in small towns ) we made our way up the steps to Macondo which is on a narrow fairly well shaded side street. Service was prompt, polite, entertaining, and food was very good (nothing fancy, but fish was very very fresh). We ate outside and heat was not too bad with all the shade and a continual breeze passing through the narrow street (sidewalk really). While there was no view, the back channel traffic of people who live in the town (mostly full time from what I gathered) and frequent tourists was very entertaining. I can't say this is the best that Hvar has to offer as we were just here for the day, but it was very acceptable and where I would head first on a return trip.

We wandered over to Macondo on our last night on Hvar with no reservation shortly before 10 PM. We only had to wait a few minutes before being efficiently seated and given menus. This restaurant felt like a well oiled machine. The service was impeccable--no fake cloying friendliness, just well timed delivery of food, drink, utensils. A limited, expensive set of choices are on the menu, but we were thrilled with the gregada fish ragout. It was simple, wholesome, filling, expertly prepared and true to the island's bounty and traditions. The jug wine was tastier here than at other restaurants we'd tried in the area.

The back lane location is away from the thronging tourist crowd. Everything about Macondo seemed infused with authenticity. Even the diners near us added to the positive experience--a sophisticated Italian family to one side and an adorable young Croatian couple to the other. They all ordered different food than we had, and it looked scrumptious, and they seemed to enjoy their meals as much as we did ours.

Macondo felt like the essence of Hvar. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go there.

It seems that macondo has a very talented chef de cuisine!
The musssels were perfect, the fritted shrimps seemed to have jumped directly from the sea to the platter.
We had alunch there with tempertures of 34+, but a fine wind cooled us down in the shadow of the narrow street, where the tables are positiones
