“Deservedly one of the top 10 restaurants in Hvar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

Great food, service and lovely setting - a little more upscale than some of the more rustic establishments so opportunity to dress up! Our waiter was excellent and demonstrated great knowledge of the menu and wine pairings. The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is that our main fish dishes were a little overcooked, and it was more expensive than I expected (admittedly, none of the good restaurants in Hvar are cheap). Would highly recommend the starter dish of home made pasta with prawns, cream and truffles, yum!

“Good!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

Many restaurants in town serve the same food and prices are almost identical. We settled for this one because the decor was appealing and the hostess took the effort to sell the restaurant and entice us. Food was not bad either.

“To taste art”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

This restaurant has a nice image with modern art and calm music in a 15th century palace. The food is of good quality and nicely done. The service shows knowledge and interest in the customer and their experience. We had a nice start of our meal, but then some other guests arrived and they were very noisy and disturbing. The servant helped us immediately to move away to another room, which was very much appreciated.

“Artful eating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

Located at a side street, away from the hustle and bustle of the main square of Hvar and away from the touristy restaurants of that area, one finds Giaxa. In the once aristocratic quarter of the historical town, Giaxa is housed in a centuries old building. The inside room with its columns is charming. However, there is an outside courtyard with its imposing palm tree and its geranium pots. There are also tables placed outside its walls, just at the alley.
The service was pleasant and the food presentation artful. My companion and I had the lunch special at 120 kunas, plus a bottle of water and with the tip the total cost for two was 306 kunas, the equivalent to 30 Canadian dollars for each person. For Canadian standards it was not a cheap lunch but...What did we get for it? We got a delightful salad of very tasteful tomatoes with buffalo cheese and basil leaves saturated with local Mediterranean olive oil. This was followed by swordfish with polenta on caper sauce. Unfortunately the swordfish was overcooked and therefore somewhat dry and chewy. The dessert was delicious with white and dark chocolate mousse with a small amount of mascarpone cream and some drops of local berries purée. The ambiance was wonderful and the music subdued and appropriate. Inspite of being disappointed with the swordfish, I would probably go back and give it another try by ordering a different dish. They accept credit cards.

“Dinner with style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

We found this restaurant by accident after leaving a restaurant we had booked without ordering. How lucky were we! This is a hidden gem for a special occasion. From the amuse bouche to dessert we enjoyed delicious course after delicious course. The extensive wine list has something to suit everyone and as I am not overly familiar with Croatian wines I appreciated the advice given by our waiter. I described what we liked and he pointed us in the direction of similar Croatian wines - and not the most expensive either! We were a party of four but this place could make for a nice romantic dinner also. Highly recommended
