Full marks to the owner Luka!! Me and my gf arrived on Hvar island and he picked us up in his car (for free) and checked us in. he gave us a detailed overview of the island and what to do and see. we stayed in a private double room (2 single beds joined together) with a mini kitchen (fridge, cutlery, crockery and hot plates to cook on), a private bathroom, shared balcony and AC!!! everything worked perfectly NO complaints.great value for money!!! plus decent security.
if we needed any help Luka or his colleagues were more than willing to help.

On another day Luka took us on a tour of hvar seeing the castle, lavender fields and great sites of Hvar - for a price much better than any tourist agency were offering.
We stayed 5 nights and we highly recommend this hostel/lodge!!!

we thank Luka for making our stay in Hvar unforgettable!!! hvala

Room Tip: get the private rooms - more expensive but worth it!!!

My fiancee and I stayed with Luka for 4 nights at the end of May 2012 and at this price, I don't know how a stay on Hvar can be bettered.
The room was basic (it's a hostel not a hotel) but we had all the facilities we could need - kitchen area (personal & communal), private en-suite bathroom, balcony, free wi-fi, etc.
Luka and his team are what make this place so good though. He attracts a really great crowd, all willing to mix and share travelling experiences. He cooked a massive BBQ one night for all the guests (at v. reasonable cost) that included as many sardines as we could eat, and his home-made bread, olive oil and wine. Nights out were also organized including free shots at Kiva Bar. Luka even personally organised transport to Jelsa so that we could get the early catamaran to Bol.
I cannot recommend (both Hvar, and) Luka's Lodge highly enough!

My boyfriend and I took the ferry out to Hvar Island from Split just for one night. We took the ferry that arrived in Stari Grad, so the directions that Luka's Lodge got a little confusing - if you try to find it from where the Hvar city ferry arrives, it's pretty straight forward. So we got lost. I called Luka on his cell and he sent someone to meet us - she was there in 10 minutes and walked us back to Luka's Lodge. The room was comfortable with a view of the water and a short walk from downtown Hvar. Luka was a gem and invited us to have coffee and cookies with him for breakfast before we left on Sunday. He told us about his town and gave us lavender oil to take home as a souvenir. We had a great time visiting before we had to take off to catch the ferry back to Split. Although our time at Luka's Lodge was brief, I would definitely recommend staying here!

There is nothing exceptional about the lodging, but Luka makes this place worth visiting. There are nice little things - access to a fridge, kitchen, etc. the location is great - easy walking distance to the town center.

The room was quiet and we had an ocean view.

We had a fab time at Luca's, its a little tricky to find so we were pleased to have very precise walking directions from Luca before we arrived. Great welcome, lots of advice and help.
Other guests really welcoming and friendly.
Great location, not far from everything in terms of centre of town, but it was VERY hilly and steep! The whole island is very hilly.. but it also means you get a great view for your entire stay.
Unfortunatley we never made it into a room with a balcony as promised, but it was due to everyone deciding to stay longer. I would suggest that as we had paid for the best room it would have been better to give us that room and ask the people who had extended their stay to move to a different room, but no harm done. The room we had was excellent, and Luca made sure we had no next door neighbours on the landing to make up for not having a balcony! We will be back.. and hope we get the balcony next time : )
Many of the 'younger' travellers made friends and hung out together, but we usually bumped into them on the way back from diving or kayaking each day. We were always welcome to join in.
A lively night out is the VIDA bar.. if you mention are staying at Luca's you get a free shot and discount! Its hilarious for people watching!!! or joining in if you want to try the tequila bomb!!
If you want to go diving, there are 2 dives companies on the island, Viking is the bored tourist company who are 2 hour walk away and reluctant to commit to dive sites and pick ups (and expensive £90 for 1 or 2 dives depending on who you talk to). We used MARINESSA.. local chap, hilarious stories and we toasted a fantastic day with his homemade tipple when we got back to land! not much sealife, but cave diving was great and hubbie saw a huge octopus building his home out of glass... amazing pics!
Overall would recomend the island, Luca's and the Marinessa dive school

This was our second stay with Luka as we were impressed when we visited two years previously. This time was even more impressive and far exceeded our high expectations for the following reasons:

1. We got off the boat at Stari Grad and by coincidence, Luka was waiting on the pier to collect other people who were staying at the lodge that night. Even though he was totally unprepared for this meeting, without any hesitation he offered us a free ride from Stari Grad to the hostel (20km away in Hvar Town) and took it all in his stride despite our arrival making the car quite full. Highly unlikely that every hostel would do such a thing and saved us a lot of trouble and money trying to look for local buses/taxi to connect to Hvar Town!

2. As we were staying at the lodge for three nights, we were treated to a new apartment that had air con, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, table and a balcony. Incredible value for money. (P.S. Luka had no recollection of meeting us 2 years previous and so please note this was not a kind gesture due to a previous friendship). Also, I can confirm following the scandalous review I've seen on tripadvisor previously that the rooms were VERY CLEAN and the bed bugs concern was obviously an isolated incident totally against what I've seen over two seperate stays with Luka.

3. What makes this Lodge such an excellent place to stay is the fact it is so much more than a room. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by Dylan (a fellow traveller who is working at the lodge to assist) and Dylan gave us a 10 min talk explaining the best of Hvar based on local knowledge and his own experiences after 2 and a half months stay on the island. Through this we were able to pick up local tips such as Hula Hula (the best sunset bar in Croatia), Lungo Mare (a croatian restaurant the locals go to which did the best sea bass I've ever tasted) and the various nightlife available to travellers. All of this was doubled up with a strong spirit within the lodge, where guests were encouraged to stay for dinner, integrate and have drinks before going out to enjoy an evening in the town.

4. Most impressive for us was Luka helping with our onward journey from Hvar. We had to move on to Bol and ferry information was sketchy. With one phone call Luka was able to advise we could get a local excursion boat at a reduced price the following morning, and the 7am bus would get us to the departure point. All went seamlessly and for only 70kn which was a massive relief stress-wise and financially as we had resigned ourselves to the 6:45am local catamaran and a 300kn taxi across the island to make the connection. Little things like this make all the difference when on a holiday!

So overall, a terrific stay. To me what makes this place 'the best of the best' is the fact it's a beautiful balance between a lodge and a hostel tastefully appealing to both types of traveller (I'm 28 and far from the hedonistic student type of old). This is brilliantly combined with the personality of Luka/Dylan who take the role of local 'fixers' and subsequently add significant value and enjoyment to your stay on Hvar. One final point, is that contrary to a few reviews, Luka and the team are NOT financially opportuntistic, and that I actually saved a lot of money thanks to their help. Brilliant place to stay and highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but lodge maybe unsuitable for people just wanting a room as the total experience...
