We recently returned from a holiday in Croatia, staying at the Villa Vidac (www.villavidak.com). We booked directly through the owner’s website (maravidak@gmail.com or sales@villavidak.com) and sent a number of follow-up emails. All correspondence was dealt with very efficiently by Mara. Perhaps because we were late in booking, no deposit was required. We simply paid as soon as we were settled into our room. Mara provided transport both to and from the airport, you will need to ask when first booking.
The room we had, looked directly onto the sea and had a shared balcony. The balcony, however, ran the full length of the front of the house and at no time did we find the occasional presence of others intrusive. The views were very special, particularly as the sun was setting and early in the morning. The room was modern and exceptionally clean, with ample room for two.
We chose to have breakfast provided and paid 5 euros each. We found this value for money, as the quality and selection of food was good. Breakfast is at 9.00am but with warning it can be at your convenience. There is a fully functioning kitchen, so you can always cater for yourself if you prefer. If you book during a relatively quiet time it’s worth asking Mara if she is able to provide you with the occasional evening meal, as an alternative to eating in Cavtat, by all accounts you won’t be disappointed! We found Mara and her sister, Mira, to be perfect hosts. They were generous with their time and attention.
If you don’t want to go far to swim or sunbathe, there are pebbled beaches with very clear water in front of the villa. If you follow the path until it ends there is a quiet little cove, which more often than not you will have to yourself.
The walk into Cavtat is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. It sounds quite some distance but there’s plenty to view and the time goes quickly. There are plenty of rocky places where you can sunbathe (buy a mat to lie on, 80 Kuna each) or if you prefer you can hire a sun bed in one of a number of designated areas for 20 Kuna per day.
A light lunch during the day will cost approximately 25 Kuna (toasted sandwich), glass of wine 20Kuna and a large draft beer 18 Kuna - try the Figurin. There is a bakery next to the Hotel Villa Patteria from which you can buy pastries or sandwiches. If you need an ice cream during the day to cool you down or to fortify you for your walk home at night, try the ice cream parlour opposite the Patteria. For 7 Kuna, again, you won’t be disappointed.
At night, for an evening meal, I would recommend that you try the Dalmacija, which is the restaurant attached to the Hotel Villa Patteria. Although not on the water front, the food and service are excellent. We ate here a number of times as we couldn’t find better. There is good choice on the menu and the wine is competitively priced (100-110 Kuna for a carafe of House white/red). The fact that the owners regularly engage with their diners and by far the majority are repeat customers, speaks volumes. One restaurant I would not recommend is the Dolium. We ate here during the early part of our stay and the service from the kitchen was terribly slow, and the quality of the food poor. Both our meals should have been served hot but were barely warm, very disappointing. A comment to that effect produced no effective response from the staff!
It’s worth remembering that it pays you to bring pound sterling with you, with a view to changing your money in Croatia. The Post Office in Cavtat will give you a much better rate than at home (9.099 at the time of writing).

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing with a balcony

We stayed one week in Villa Vidak in august and it was just perfect. Villa Vidak has most beautiful view to the sea and sunset. You have two minute walk to swim and 10 minute walk to center. In the apartment they have all necessary equipment for cooking , the kitchen is very big with big living room and all the five bedrooms are very cozy. One of the bedrooms has also jacuzzi.

Room Tip: The five bedroom apartment is just perfect for bigger company.

I can not recommend Villa Vidak enough. We are so happy we decided to stay in Cavtat rather than Dubrovnik. Cavtat is a quaint little village just 10 min walk from Villa Vidak. It is quiet and quaint with no cruise ships unlike Dubrovnik. There are ferries (45 min) or bus (10 min) that will take you to Dubrovnik for very cheap. You can also catch ferries to islands. The rooms are clean, fresh, modern with air conditioning. The bathroom was also clean and modern and quite spacious for European standards. Each room has a large balcony overlooking a beautiful view of the sea and landscape. There is a communal kitchen and washing machine and even a laundry drying rack. There is a quiet beach right below the Villa and a walking path that will take you to even more secluded beaches. Mara, the owner, was so kind and helpful and will pick you up from the Cilipi airport for free. She was also an amazing cook. She made us a seafood dinner that she caught that day and served it on the balcony as the sun set. It was so delicious, we asked her to make the next night's meal as well. Both meals were better than the 100Euro meal we had at Cavtat's best restaurant, and she only charged us 30Euro for dinner for two including salad, soup, bread and wine. Mara was a wonderful hostess and has created a beautiful and peaceful place to stay on the Adriatic. Also, ask her about the sunset sea kayak adventure offered by her sons (who were also wonderfully nice and helpful). It was breathtaking and absolute favorite thing I did on my trip to Croatia and Montenegro. We loved the stay at Villa Vidak so much that we decided not to go to Bosnia and stayed at the Villa 2 extra days.

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea with a balcony.
