“A special place in beautiful Cavtat”
Reviewed July 14, 2010

From the moment Geoff collected us at the airport we realised our holiday at Villa Ivy would be a special experience. On arrival, there was a selection of goodies in the fridge, to eat and drink, which we greatly appreciated.

The apartments are beautifully furnished and equipped and the views along the coast to Dubrovnik and the surrounding mountains are absolutely stunning.

Cavtat is a delightful place, in a beautiful location, and has a wide selection of excellent restaurants. The Croatian people are determined to provide quality provision for holiday-makers and the standard of food, service and facilities is extremely high.. We particularly enjoyed the restaurants "Ivan" and "Toranj" for lunch or an evening meal. There is also a well-stocked supermarket within a few minutes walk of the villa, with lovely fresh bread every day.

It is easy to visit Dubrovnik, either by boat or by bus, and the island of Lokrum provides welcome shade when the sun shines.

However, it's the gracious hospitality of Geoff and Helen which makes Villa Ivy such a special place to stay. They provide hospitality of the very highest quality and we are already looking at the diary for a return visit..

In summary, Villa Ivy provides holiday memories to treasure.

My husband Alan and I spent an idyllic week at Villa Ivy in May and having taken time to reflect on our holiday I am convinced we experienced a standard of accommodation at Villa Ivy which we feel is unsurpassed and which is situated in such a beautiful understated part of this wonderful country.

This was our third visit to Croatia in 5 years, however our first time in Cavtat. It is a picture postcard beautiful resort with wooded headlands framing stunning natural bays with the clearest water found anywhere. Safe walkways are everywhere as are the numerous open air bars serving cooling drinks and tasty food. The Croatian people are very courteous and welcoming, they clearly take great pride and delight in showing off their country to the visitor and are even more delighted when the visitors in turn show demonstrate their appreciation of the country.

On the subject of people – what can I say about Geoff and Helen that’s not been said already? From meeting us on arrival at the airport to waving us goodbye at the airport they are totally unlike any hosts we have ever met on our many holidays – they are simply unique. In creating Villa Ivy on what was an empty gorse covered hillside to the splendidly comfortable and superbly appointed Villa that it now is was not luck. It was been built with a vision and a desire to offer their guests everything that could be required and desired and then more. A welcome pack comprising tea, coffee, wine, bread, butter, milk, beer, cheese, ham, cereal and fresh salad together with a homemade dressing all provided free of charge, even a powerful pair of binoculars to obtain a closer view of the magnificent mountains and the large cruise ships anchored off Dubrovnik across the bay.

They were more than happy to walk with us through an initial visit to town, pointing out places of local interest, good bars and also the restaurants in which we would be offered a 10% discount as guests of Villa Ivy. Our best evening meal was at Toranj where we had the Croatian delicacy ‘Lamb under the bell’. Although at a lunch Kate and I had with Geoff and Helen in Konoba, a restaurant in the mountains above Cavtat, we enjoyed delicious peasant soup followed by the best grilled lamb’s liver I have ever tasted.

We cannot speak highly enough of Villa Ivy and in particularly Geoff and Helen. They are, as I said earlier, quite unique and obviously so love meeting new guests and ensuring their Villa Ivy experience is as unique as they clearly are!

Kate and I have made two new friends who we will meet again.

No doubt you will have read all the reviews and seen the photo's but in order to truly appreciate this place, from its spotlessly clean and exceptionally well equiped apartments, to the truly stunning balcony views, to Geoff and Helens commitment to ensuring you want or need for nothing during your stay, you simply have to visit Villa Ivy.

As first time visitors to Croatia with its beautiful coastline, simple but exceptional food and friendly, welcoming people, we pretty much fell in love with it immediately and in particular with Cavtat's seriously laid back charm. If its chilled out you're after then this is the place!

We would recommend walking the walls of Dubrovnic followed if you are so inclined by a pint of Guiness in "The Gaffe" Irish bar (surprisingly excellent), or a beer in "Bill Gates" bar - probably the most chilled out bar in the world! And the trip to Mostar in Bosnia is well worth the 2.5 hour drive. Geoff will arrange car hire (even white cars) at the most competetive rates and for the car to be conveniently dropped off and collected at the villa.
Of course there is also no better way to spend the day than lounging by the Villa's pool doing very little at all with a good book and a few cold Ozujsko's.

In Cavtat itself you will no doubt find a favourite restaurant or bar but ours was without doubt the Restaurant Dalmacija with special thanks to the owners and the head waiter Tomo for their excellent food and for looking after us so well. We can also highly recommend restaurants "Ivan", "Kolona", the lamb under the bell at "Toranj" and not forgetting without doubt one of the best sunset spots in the world at Cafe Bar Posejdon. Just a word of warning regarding one restaurant in particluar - if you would rather not have to re-morgage your house when you get home steer clear of Restaurant Pacific!!

Without doubt Villa Ivy is 5* across the board and while we did not wish to come home at the end of our two weeks, we very much look forward to going back and to meeting up with all those who we now think of as friends.

We stayed here for 7 nights; we were attending a conference in Cavtat. the vila is beautiful and the view is great. The owners are very nice and helpful. They provided a welcome pack including food, wine and beers which was perfect since we arrived late and very tired after a long trip. we would stay again here but hopefully next time our purpose of trip is pure holiday.

Firstly, Geoff and Helen cannot do enough for you, from picking up and dropping at the airport, a welcome pack of food and much more, covered in the earlier reviews.
The location is stunning - unbroken views of mountains on two sides and sea and mountains on the other. There is a fairly steep walk back from the town but you soon get used to it. If not, there is a regular bus. However, the reward is the views, across a valley to the hills and tumbling down to one of Cavtat's bays.
The apartment (Mountain apartment) was just great - new, clean, modern - up to the standards of an excellent boutique hotel in the UK but much bigger than most, plus a double wrap-around balcony which took in both of the above views, as well as overlooking the pool.
Cavtat is lovely, with two pine covered peninsulas with footpaths, jutting out into two serene bays and plenty of bars to relax and enjoy the scene. We went to Dubrovnik once by boat, which was a great way to arrive, and once by bus. The buses are very regular, though the one we got was very busy, though okay and got there in less than half an hour.
Overall, if you want a relaxing holiday, this is it!

The Owners, Helen and Geoff have spent a lot of time and energy into making everyone's stay enjoyable. The rooms are immaculate and very clean. Helen and Geoff are on hand at anytime to advise you on what to see, and where to eat. They will collect you from the airport in a clean jag, and drive you to your apartment. I have booked again for next year!
