“An oasis of calm within the old town - Highly recommended”
Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

This is our second visit to zen garden 1 (Wuyi) the first being 8 years ago. Whilst Linjiang has got louder & brasher, zen garden remains unchanged & as tranquil as ever.

Zen garden is an old courtyard house within the original old town but far enough away to avoid most of the noise of Lijiang (ground floor rooms 2-9 are quieter). The welcome is very genuine.

The hotel is hard to find so if arriving by plane make sure to arrange your arrival through the hotel who will send someone to pick yourself & baggage up at the edge of the pedestrian precinct & direct you to your hotel via winding lanes and alleys. If arriving any other way, liaison with the hotel on arrival is essential.

Very Nice hotel in the old Town of lijiang, away from the crowd.
The reception is very friendly and warm. The lady is super kind as well as the staff.
The rooms are a little bit small, but nevertheless very ok.
The breakfast is great.
This is a hotel where you get pampered. Very happy being in this hotel and with our choice.

Room Tip: Ask a room on the second floor.

I have to say that this was most probably the best hotel I have ever stayed. It is not perfect (from material point of view), but we felt there like at home. All staff was so friendly, ready and able to help. Located close to centre of old town. Price 500.- incl breakfast (peak season, during golden week).
Stayed here 1 night only (unfortunately, because of problem with booking via eLong).
So, guys, don't wait and book it when in LiJiang.

At the recommendation of a friend, I booked the Zen Garden Hotel and was met at the entrance to the old town (no cars allowed). The hotel, as its name suggests, is built around a small zen garden with pond, fish and calm music playing.

They have two and the one on the hill is the more expensive one. They made a mistake with my booking and therefore I was upgraded to the 'better' Zen Garden. Upon my return to Lijiang from the north, i stayed in the this one, the "cheaper" one. My stay in Lijiang was partly great because of this hotel but also due to the hotel manageress named Mu Li who not only speaks English but helps in every possible way she can. She helped me to get the right busses to Baisha and to Qaituo. She helped me get the right medicine for my flu and showed me where the pharmacy is. She booked and rebooked accommodation for me in the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Really one those people who can make a difference for you.

The mornings start here with Chinese Harp music played live. Breakfast is complementary and is good. I didn't find significant difference between this hotel and the more expensive version. In fact, if anything this is less noisy despite being in the old town whereas the other one is on e hill but somehow the noise at night from kareoke bars reaches the hotel.

Highly recommended. Fr more recommendations see my blog: http://chinainmyhands2013.blogspot.hk/

Excellent service at this hotel. We were welcomed with tea and sunflower biscuits. We even had them in our room. I was using the internet and someone popped over to give me tea. Really nice atmosphere and really friendly staff.

The grounds are beautiful and the hotel is in an excellent location to explore the cobbled streets of Lijiang. There were people playing music in the courtyard.

The rooms are small. No airconditioning. The bathroom was basic (and no paper in loo). The towels in my bathroom were damp (and looked a bit dirty). The sheets felt a bit damp too (may have been cold) but they were clean. I used my travel towel. In terms of the room I would rate 3* but there is a tv and wi-fi.

The thing that worried me were the mozis. The window was open (to keep it cool as no air-con) with the light on and quite a few had come in. Judging by the patterns on the ceiling I think this is a frequent problem. I suggest the hotel gets mozis nets or somewhere to hang your own nets and that would solve the issue.

Breakfast was okay - there was a decent, but not wide selection available.

I liked the hotel because the location and the friendly staff and because it was traditional.

Room Tip: Not on ground floor.

We enjoyed this hotel very much. The design of the interior and courtyard is very pleasing and the hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. It feels like warm bath when you enter the hotel. Breakfast is excellent. The small ensuite room we had contained the basic facilities we needed, was cleaned well en looked good.

Exceedingly friendly and welcoming staff. Peaceful and quiet courtyard, despite being right in the centre of the extremely busy old town of Lijiang. Comfortable. Steady stream of good tea and snacks and a lovely breakfast. Highly recommended.
