This place is very clean and the owner speak english as a native. Ratio price/quality is excellent.
Very good to stay 2-3 days (not that much in the area).
Food etc is ok, but for the price you cannot expect more.

Thanks Bruce !

The garden at Bruce Chalet is the best feature. Rooms have a nice bad (and upstairs bathroom in the room with the mountain view is nice). Need to walk 10 min in a dark road to reach the shuhe old town (actually the new-built part of the old town). Helpful and friendly staff but from the other reviews my expectations were higher. For sure it's a very quiet place in the surrounding, even though the ground floor rooms can be noisy. The garden comes with a lot of insects in the rooms (and mosquitos)

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are better, no doubt, but look for a good deal

We chose the place because of its great rating in Tripadvisor, 3rd of hotels, so where disappointed and surprised by the reviews. We spent 6 nights and were looking for a place to rest and escape the heat of the rest of China.

1. Location - away from the busy part of town so was lovely and peaceful. Had great views of the Jade Mountains. However, we found it was a bit far from town. It is a 10 minute walk to the edge of town but in fact takes 20-25 minutes to get to the centre of town where all the nice restaurants and shops are. There are no restaurants nearby. They say they can pick up or drive to place but they make you feel a bit unconfortable and hesitant. It depends "on if he is free". If you have a busy schedule and have plans to be away for most of the day it seems ok, but if you are expecting to stay at the hotel and travel back and forth to town...it is a bit far. I recommending getting something closer to town, but then you have the problem of being too close to all the tourist.

2. Rooms - We had a double room that was cleaned everyday and nicely furnished with a big comfortable bed. Not much room to stretch. Bathroom clean and good. Can be a bit noisy but that is common in all the traditionally constructed buildings

3. Service - the service was excellent on the first day with tea and fruit served on arrival however it went down hill from there. We could not help feel there was a reluctance in service through gritted teeth. They were hesitant to let us use the kitchen and we were never made to feel comfortable to ask for help.

4. Breakfast - good healthy variety, however a bit expensive at 30rmb per person. For a westerner it is cheap but in reality it is a lot in local terms. I suggest, if you can get to the outskirts of town you can buy a local breakfast for under 10 rmb...but it might just easier to pay the 30 and take it easy.

5. Cost - very expensive at 260rmb per night for a double bed. And add 30rmb per person for two is a total of 320rmb a day. Ouch!

Surprised they got such a great review on tripadvisor as no:3 of all the hotels and would not consider it as good value.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms have a good outlook over the garden and good sitting spaces in front of the rooms.

Bruce was super friendly, helped with everything, including helping us plan our itinerary and arranging transportation for us to and from Shangri-la. We had a great time, although the rooms aren't sound-proofed so well (throughout the night we heard dogs barking and in the morning we heard chickens crow). Overall, it was a charming stay. They had a small kitchen/dining room where they made us breakfast everyday.

Finding the place was a bit of a challenge, but all you need to know is head to the far corner of the town...et voila! A rustic inn with charm. The management was awesome and they were always there to help and to provide tips...all of which were spot on. Rooms are comfortable, but be aware that during rainy season, it might rain inside. Comfortable and reasonably clean with good space to stretch your legs. Be sure to have the BBQ...but invite at least 6 of your closest friends and family. Breakfast was simple but fine and sitting with the other guests was a treat as you could share experiences and learn a little about the world at the same time.

Room Tip: Choose one of the larger rooms at the ends of the buidlings.
