My partner Lee & myself stayed at the Bruce Chalet in December 2012 & it was one of the best experiences of our lives. Bruce and his family were really friendly & helpful, and made us feel at home immediately. Bruce gave us some great tips on where to go & what to do so we could get the best from our stay. It was quite cold in December but Bruce & his lovely wife were always there with a cup of tea to warm us up. Our room at the Bruce Chalet was decorated lovely, although a little cold, and had beautiful views. Bruce even invited us to his family BBQ which was a lovely gesture. We would definitely go back to the Bruce Chalet, it was a great experience!

As soon as we arrived, Bruce helped us out in every way. He arranged a driver for us to visit Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the Lashi Wetland, and everything worked out better than we hoped and for a very fair price. The hotel is an easy 15-20 minutes drive from Lijiang, but the Shuhe old town is just as nice and easy to walk to from the hotel. I wish that we could have kept our driver for our whole trip to China, he was so pleasant. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to Lijiang.

The Bruce Chalet is tucked away at the edge of a real neighborhood, about ten minutes walk from Shu He Old Town. The lightings in the area was low and most parts of the roads were unlit, allowing us a good view of the stars at night. The rooms surrounded the central garden and the breakfast was served in the ground floor kitchen. We had a Snow Mountain View Room which is situated at a corner of the second floor and it had a cosy private balcony. The room was very spacious and the large comfy bed was equipped with an electric heating system.

As reported, it can be cold but...
We arrived in Li Jiang airport at about 7:30pm and Bruce arranged for Xiao Pang to drive us over. Throughout the hour long drive, Xiao Pang enthusiastically entertained us with an introduction of the history, sights and culture of Lijiang and Shangri-La. Our arrival was warmly received and we were served with apples and yuzu drink in our room. Throughout our stay, the nights were pretty cold at about 5 Celsius and the room felt like 15 Celsius. The heater wasn’t enough to warm this big room to what we were used to but it wasn’t a much of a problem, in fact, quite an enjoyable experience for us tropic dwellers. We had our thermals on walking around in the room and we preheat our cloths for next day in under the heated blanket as well. The electric heated bed was really comfortable and we were “out cold” before we know it. Shiok!

In “Cold” waters...
Of our four nights stay, we were left without hot water supply to our room for 2 nights. It was off-peak season and they were carrying out the yearly maintenance of the hot water tank, unfortunately for us, the technician didn’t get it right this time round. The Bruce chalet were very apologetic and provided us with a flask of hot water every night. Another thing about water, the water mixer in the bathroom is slightly tricky to adjust because the cold weather outside chilled the water supply. We found that each slight adjustment, letting the water run for a while stabilizes the water temp and we could achieve the desired temp consistently. We also found that the pair of ceiling heating lamps at the bath area was a nice touch as it prevented us from turning into ice popsicles after our showers.:)

The experience...
Breakfast was a homemake style fanfare of fresh local produce like corn, apples, & sweet potatoes, there were also local bread (ba-ba), fried vermicelli, eggs, toast, etc., freshly prepared by Xiao Zhao and Qiu Ju. The dishes were simple and very satisfying. As testified by previous reviews, the hosts at Bruce Chalet were very friendly and enjoyed their company. We chatted with them over breakfast and, sometimes, in the evenings as well. They shared with us many interesting tales and experiences they had operating the inn, the local culture and of course, countless jokes. We also enjoyed our time spent at the balcony relaxing to the beautiful slights offered with some fresh fruits bought at Shu He Old town and a cup of hot tea. At sunrise, the snow mountain appeared golden orange, in the day was the tranquil view of the country side, and at night, the sky was littered with countless stars. Simply beautiful.

Is Bruce Chalet the best accommodation in Lijiang?
During our stay we experienced some inconveniences and glitches, but we also felt the passion in this team of dedicated, friendly and sincere hosts. This is something that, I think, many establishments would find it hard to offer and we found it here. So, despite the issues we experienced, we find that the stay took our mind off the stress back home and we long to return to soon for another holiday. Although I do not know if Bruce Chalet is the best in Lijiang, but I know its good enough for me to forget about trying the rest.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had enjoyed the big family room- spacious, clean & on 1st floor. Actually the King size bed is big enough to accommodate 3 adult Asian, but we added 1 single bed. The small heater in the room is not warm enough but the electric blankets are ok. Good breakfast and served hot tea when we returned sight-seeing. Takes about 15-20mins walk to Shu He Old town but a bit too cold to walk in winter. Stay here if you want to go to Shu He old town and day trips out of Lijiang ie. snowy mountain.....they can make car arrangement for you. This chalet is quite far away from Lijiang old town - about 30mins by car so if you want to stay late in Lijiang old town better stay there for 1 or 2 nights. Shu He old town is dead at night where else Lijiang old town is so alive with music, lights..........

As other reviews attest, Bruce and Bella make you feel very welcome and provide great advice and assistance in exploring a wonderful area of China. We (as an older couple) preferred Shu He Old Town and the chalet is close by but far enough way to provide a respite from the many tourists in the area. Breakfast is highly recommended with a chance to chat and eat some local produce. Bruce and Bella can sort out problems that you can encounter and make it their responsibility that you will enjoy your stay - we saw this first hand. My only recommendation would be heating in the rooms for the cold winter nights but not really a problem.

We stayed here for 4 nights during September and had a brilliant time. We were given a warm welcome from Bruce and Bella with free tea and biscuits, which were lovely after having been travelling for the past 8 hours. The guesthouse itself is beautiful, the rooms were spacious and very clean, and the garden was just an oasis. We often spent a few hours reading our books with a beer or two looking out at the little fish ponds, plants and meandering pathway. Shuhe village is much much quieter than Lijiang, and in my opinion is a nicer town to explore (though much smaller). It is only 5 minutes walk away from the guesthouse and definitely worth a few visits.

We also spent 2 days doing a hike along Tiger Leap Gorge, Bruce sorted the transport out for us there and it was probably the highlight of our trip to China. If you're fit enough to do some walking then go for it, you won't regret it.

Our only negative comment would be that the dogs in the village woke us up around 5am every morning which isn't the guesthouses fault but best be prepared and bring some earplugs :)

First need to thanks to Bruce, Bella and their team.

We enjoyed like home. Since my baby had a good friend of Pherlon (the dog), her Bella aunty and the Shompang (the driver). It's a really a nice relaxing guesthouse.

Specially Bruce is very helpful in regards of planning a trip and other matter. He save me some time of doing some money transaction for the cost of train ticket and topping money to SIM. He also helped us to drive us for the public bus and ensure his guesthouse driver with us for the total trip. We, especially my baby, liked the driver and he is really very trustful.

Common area is nice to gossip with other guest at breakfast time like a home. Enough arrangement for breakfast with a small money. Rooms are clean enough with yulong view. Even Bruce managed a small dinner while we came back at night. Everything we really enjoyed.

The only matter which we faced problem is bathroom mixer. It always changing to very hot or cold not fixed any mixed flow regularly. I'm sure it will be fixed soon as I saw Bruce is very caring for the guests.

I suggest to choose this guesthouse to everyone.
