“Picturesque tea house style accommodation but with better than expected service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The Zen Garden is a pretty place with a wet courtyard, fish ponds and a number of open salas for quiet contemplation, calligraphy, tea drinking etc. The rooms are prettily furnished and well equipped with a greater range of amenities (toiletries, hairdryer, fruit baskets, wifi) than I might have expected in such an out of the way town.

The location is a five minute walk uphill from the old town, which means there are lovely views from the courtyard and terraces, though not from the rooms, which are quite closed in and cosy. They are a little removed from the noisy bars downtown, which theoretically is an advantage since noise pollution in Lijiang after dark is quite extreme - but since noise travels up, if you want to sleep before 11:30pm, when the bars are compulsorily gagged by local ordinance, you will need earplugs.

Breakfast was limited but the eggs were good.

Though most of the staff had limited English they were all very helpful and quick to bring in linguistic reinforcement if we were unable to guess what was happening through mime and context.

Since the place can be difficult to find (most shop assistants and bar staff are not local so couldn't help direct us even in Mandarin, either get written directions in Chinese and english or ask the hotel to arrange a car for you. The price was little different from the cost of hailing a cab at the airport.

Room Tip: Our room was on the upstairs terrace and was very nice. Our friends on the courtyard level found th...

Spent two nights here. Very nice views over Lijiang from the hotel, which is uphill from the old town. The main building is charming although the bedroom and bathroom were quite ordinary. Breakfast was a disappointment with a very small buffet of unappetizing choices plus eggs that are made to order. We found the hotel acceptable but certainly not memorable in any way.

Convenient location close to the town - although it is up a hill, so not good if you have difficulty walking up hill. Lovely chinese-style decor, and reasonable space in the room. The staff were very friendly, however their english was limited. A tip if you are staying here: it takes at least 5 minutes before you get hot water from the shower.

3rd trip to Lijiang and the first time stay at Zen Garden Hotel (Lion Mountain Yard). They have a sister hotel with the same name, located inside the Old Town.
The property is small but everything is very well appointed. The staff were amazing, very helpful in everyway they can. The hotel is located on the top of the hill overlooking the Old Town. Try the tea service in the afternoon. Local snacks are offer with tea for the guest to taste for free. The enviroment of the tea room and the view helps me and my friends unwind after a day of walking.
The only downside of this property is that there are a few very noisy bars located at the foot of the hill and the sound just travel up. The noise will stop at 11pm, but if you planning to tug in early you better have a pair of ear plugs ready. I had my in-ear headphones.
At the moment the road leading up to the hotel by car is closed due to the construction of the Aman Hotel behind Zen Garden. Make sure you ring up the upon arriving so the can arrange for your bags to be transported up.

The hotel is perched on a hill and the view from the second foor was nice. Roomwise, the premium room was ok (bed was old). However, the noise from the bars at the foot of the hill can still be heard every night. It didn't bother us as much. What did was the shower - one of the nights we came back from a day of hiking only to find the shower not hot at all. Waited an hour as manager suggested, still no luck. Turned out we were the only guests that night and somehow they shut down the boiler during the day. After a few back and forth with the management, including a writeup to the senior manager/owner, we gave up and managed to take showers in lukewarm water.

Given the top rate this hotel demands, you'd expect a notch above hostel quality, which includes the availability of hot shower every day. Not the case when we visited. Besides, breakfast was basic, and the room was freezing cold.

The real deal Chinese ancient Hotel with an incredible ambience of yesteryear and a location in the Old Town which is a marvel in itself. Bordering on ramshackle the structure is sound throughout a rabbit warren of Chinese decorated rooms. Getting your luggage from the car is a real challenge as you cannot park within 5 minutes walk of the Hotel. The Porter will meet you at the car and return them for a small tip. There are several sets of steps on the path and inside the Hotel. The standard rooms are small, you need to unpack your luggage on the bed. The comfortable beds are a double and a single jammed together but made up separately. The breakfast and the WiFi are very good. Some noise from the bands of an evening until around 11pm, but that is a small price to pay for being so close to the action. Old Town markets, bars, entertainment and local food outlets start 20 metres from the Hotel entry. The view from the verandas of an evening is a jewel box of coloured lights with a backing sound of a pop music beat. Western food is available in the Town Square such as Pizza Hut, where you can order a steak and a beer in China. Washing at the Hotel is cheap and efficient. Go there yu gunna luv it.

We stayed 4 days in April 2012.
The location is nice at the top of the hill with great views to Lijiang old town. When arriving to the hotel with luggage, bear in mind that the acces road to the hotel is closed to vehicles during the day so you will have to carry your luggage up many steps. That's what happened to us when we left the hotel to go to the airport. We asked to book a taxi in reception and they said that the taxi was going to pick us up at the hotel, but in fact we had to walk our way down the hill with heavy bags without any help from the hotel. This was quite annoying and is the reason why we don't give it 4 stars. Also the taxi was more expensive than a normal one that you could get on the street.

Room was very clean but a bit small for the price that we paid. The special rooms have great decoration and plenty of character. If you can afford it and are travelling as a couple I would strongly recommend staying in one of the special rooms with views to the mountains.
Wifi was fast and free.

We stayed in two different rooms during our holiday. The room on the bottom floor (beside the kitchen and breakfast area) was quiet during the night although a bit noisy in the early morning as you could hear the staff preparing the breakfast.
On our last night we had a room on the top floor. This was much quieter during the morning but at night you could hear the music from the disco-bars down in the old town. This was going on only until 11pm so it was no problem for us.

Breakfast was nice and tasty. One day there was a lady playing a lovely kind of instrument like a chinese harp. But that was only one day!
There are also free snacks and tea every afternoon with tasty sesame biscuits and fruit.

Staff were professional and very helpful, except for the taxi issue!

Room Tip: You can hear music until 11pm in the rooms on the top floor. You can hear the kitchen staff cooking...
