“Exceptional comfort and service”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

We stayed at the Banyan Tree in Lijiang a few years ago in October. It's not far from Shangri-La, and Banyan Tree feels like a paradise. We had our own villa with private plunge pool spa in the back. The room was so nice that we hated to leave it or the hotel, although the traveling we did in the area was very special.
The service at the hotel was over-the-top superlative in every regard, from the rose petals strewn on our bed, to all the implementation of exceptional Banyan Tree personal service that you are showered with from the moment you arrive at the resort.
The food service was excellent in every regard, and we had both in-room dining as well as dining in the restaurant.
We look forward to trying other Banyan Tree properties around the world as Lijiang was a delightful introduction to the superior quality of the brand. We highly recommend it.

The place!
When you see the snowtop of the mountain when you have your breakfast;
When you spa;
When you enter the room full of traditional beauty;
When you take a bath at the tub where you can see the sky;
It's the place!
Price's high,Distance‘s long,but still you know it's worth it.

Room Tip: all rooms are good.

This is a long overdue review. We went in Mid March last year. Booked a 3 nights stay in a Pool Villa. Im glad I was able to check "staying in Lijiang Banyan Tree" off my bucket list. This has been a long awaited holiday for us.

Pros: Excellent view. Super romantic cos of the view of the mountain and exotic cos of the style of deco of the place. Love the full glass sliding door, you can enjoy the full view of the mountain in the comfort of your warm bed. Love that the bed comes with heating that you can adjust. Coming from a tropical country, we couldnt stand the cold weather very well. Our villa was still too cold for us even after hours of putting the heater on full blast. But after a call, the hotel offered to send an extra portable heater to us. Afterwards, our room was toasty and warm. Excellent!
Another nice touch is the different types of tea with a traditional chinese tea set available in the villa for use. Also, love the music from the CD in the room.
We tried hailing a taxi from town back to the hotel, the driver couldn't understand us even though we spoke mandarin (he had to asked a policeman to help translate) and the taxi had a strong smell of smoke, yuck.
Although the location of the hotel is further away from the main town which requires you to take a taxi to town, the taxi drivers booked by the hotel can speak mandarin that we can understand and there is no smell of smoke or worse a smoking taxi driver while you're in the car. We were told by one taxi driver that the hotel forbids them to smoke in the car while ferrying the hotel guests. Plus point! If you're fussy like me, find a taxi driver you like from the hotel and book the driver for the whole period of your stay.
Lastly, the grounds around Banyan Tree are beautiful and made really dramatic by the backdrop of the Mountain. The hotel itself is so beautiful that its an actual tourist attraction for locals.

Cons: The standard of the food at breakfast was average. We tried a wanton noodles soup from room service, not good. The chinese restaurant didn't meet our expectation too, food was way too salty and I actually love salty food more than most people i know.

Regretted my decision on spending the extra SGD$200 per night in choosing the pool villa over garden spa villa. As the weather was too cold during march in Lijiang for a Singaporean like me to appreciate soaking in the pool in cold weather as another reviewer had advised. On hindsight, I should have asked the hotel to adjust the temp of the pool water for us. Anyways, the pool is really too small for swimming so I would advise saving your dough and just book the spa villa if you like to soak while enjoying the mountain view.

Spa experience: It was just ok. First of all, the deco of the spa was a let down compared to other hotels we have been to. Bright white lights in the massage room?!? Huh for what? How is that soothing and relaxing? It makes the place look cheap.

Lastly, would I recommend anyone else to stay in Banyan Tree Lijiang? Of course I would! As far as I know, its the only hotel in Lijiang so far that offer such awesome view of the mountain from your own room.

Room Tip: Request for a spa villa with a view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

My rule is to always rate a hotel objectively (not on my subjective experience there) because otherwise the rating becomes misleading as everyone's expectations and experience is different. I had been misled to hotels that are rated number 1, five star on tripadvisor, but turn out to be very disappointing 3/4 star hotels.

Anyways, very reluctantly i gave it 5 star, when i really want to give it a 3 star. Overall take-away: 1) do NOT stay in this hotel in the winter months. you WILL be COLD. 2) Consider crown plaza which is more convenient and as nice.

OK, first the good points and why it is a 5 star. the view of the glacier is great. the architecture is nice. the rooms are spacious. you get your own private courtyard with a jacuzzi. rooms are modern, great design, clean and comfortable. the staff are helpful and friendly. so everything you expect of a 5 star, it has. (except i found some disgusting coffee stain on the CD player, this is not acceptable in a 5 star hotel)

Now why i had a 3 star experience. it is COLD! we stayed there in early December. the door is not sealed (old chinese style, which looks nice but leaves a big crack)....cold wind slips through. even though I keep turning the thermostat up, till 28 degrees, the only thing i want to do is to hide under the duvet in the bed. but i imagine if you go during spring, summer, and fall, you would have a much better time enjoying some great time in your own private and lush courtyard.

then the location is not convenient. yes you can walk to suhe old town, but to get to the main dayan old town and to get back, you won't find any taxi that will take you with the meter, you will get charged more than round trip price for a one way trip.

3rd, we gave our postcards (stamped, ready to be mailed) to the hotel driver who took us to the airport because we forgot to post them. well, they never arrived to our friends'......

4th, we paid almost double the price than the crown plaza (where we stayed our first 3 nights), and i feel even at the same price, crown plaza is a better deal: better location, as nice but warm room.

oh yea, last point, breakfast has limited selection. on the disappointing side considering it is a 5 star hotel.

Superior experience. After a very long journey we were greeted with serene but efficient and professional service and accommodations. The reception staff were able to explain directions, secure drivers for excursions, and very efficiently check us in and check us out. The setting within the walls of the property are lovely. The rooms were splendid. We have travelled many places in the world and this hotel ranks in the top of those we have patronized.

Everything we exprienced there was almost perfect, stunning and stylish facilities in the rooms and great service, and of course the beautiful snow mountain view every corner. Love the lake! The only thing I would hope to improve is the food menu for a Chinese stomach, there are not many choices for somebody who don't like western style foods.
