Jim's Tibetan Hotel
Ranked #5 of 518 Hotels in Dali
Reviewed June 26, 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Jim's Tibetan Hotel. His mum let us in early in the morning as we arrived from the overnight train from Kunming. Jim had also been kind enough to advice us on taxi cost from Dali and facilitate our early arrival.
With excellent english he was also able to advise us on things to do in the area and organise a driver for us to tour the area in one of his cars.
Rooms were nice and clean and bathroom was decent.
His mum also cooked the meals and although her english is non existent she makes up for it with a warm smile!
It's located 5-10 mins walk from the Dali old town which is just about right I think. There are great views from the rooftop bar of the mountains in the distance- stunning in the evening after a long day walking.. especially with a cold beer!
Would definitely recommend it to friends.

This is a wonderful place to stay in Dali. It is a just a short walk into town - not too far and not too close. It has a beautiful garden which was wonderful for the children who were travelling with us. The hotel is built along Tibetan architecture lines and is spacious, private and very comfortable. If this is not enough it is owned and run by the legendary Jim whose welcome, hospitality and generosity makes it all superb. Jim has a very extensive knowledge of Northern Yunnan and it's minority peoples. He speaks English fluently and shares his knowledge generously. Nothing is too much trouble and he looks after his guests grandly. The hotel has a good kitchen and we found it a really good place to get fresh and interesting food. We highly recommend it for anyone lucky enough to be travelling in this area. It is a truly wonderful place if travelling with children.

Very pleasant courtyard hotel, shared balconies outside rooms, lovely freshly prepared food, couple of minutes walk to south gate, food shops at bottom of street, Jim is very helpful, English is fluent, beware of his tibetan hooch, not to my taste, only problem we had was waiting for breakfast on our last day when we had pick up arranged, all sorted when jim arrived

This hotel is recommended for backpackers, couples or singles. The design of the place is nice, looks like a Tibetan hotel. This place is better than other hotels nearby with a nice yard with chairs surrounding tables. Outside, you can try the nightlife of BBQ, dancing and local food.

The hotel is very pretty with verandas surrounded by flowers and a lovely garden. The location is great-near to town but not too near -and up a quiet street. The rooms had some lovely furniture and there were various heating appliances which were very welcome at this time of year.Jim was a friendly guy and his staff were the same. The food in the restaurant was quite good, the breakfasts were very filling. The main drawback for us was the cleanliness of the bathrooms- they just needed a bit more of a scrub.

Okay, what can you not say good about Jim and his wonderful Hotel ! He greeted us with such enthusiasm , and that cold beer...his favourite and ours...Beerlao !He gave us a top floor double room ... with the misty mountains just above us almost embracing us !Of course we hit there at the start of winter ...so a heater was at the ready , the shower just the ticket at the end of a long day ...HOT !and plentiful !!!!
Just loved everything about this place and Jim is the reason, not to mention the beautiful food and the lovely staff and accommodation...nothing was too much for any of them ! If you are into ornate Chinese furniture , our room had stacks !...and you will love it ! Dali can get a bit "the same " after a few days but most people do the hikes etc...Jim can arrange most things , but we were happy to relax and do the local delights.... the lake villages , the cormorant fishermen ( bit touristy but great ) but loved all the flowers in the walking streets ,yes walked around like most of the girls with flowers all around my hat for days ..!. the color ,the costumes and those " brightly flower patterned cushioned" covering all the seats in foreigner street restaurants with the never flowing stream took my eye ...but without being too boring mostly headed back to Jim's for dinner just for the home away from home feel !.. Yes the Hotel is one to be enjoyed with all the ornate balconies etc ..the roof top bar with beautiful views over the mountains and the lake would be a must in the warmer months ...!
so if you do venture to Dali ....I am sure you will enjoy the wonderful hospitality that Jim offers ! WE loved it !!!!

Room Tip: If you can get a double room on the top floor over looking the rose garden ..... no noise we had b...
