“OK, but only if you have nothing better to do”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

We took a full day tour around the lake. THe hotel in Dali had arranged a car and driver. This was a very good arrangement because the hotel manager spoke excellent English, and whenever we had a question, the driver phoned the hotel manager on his mobile, so we could use him as an interpreter. The lake is not spectacular at all, the scenery has nothing really special to offer. The cormorant fishing is interesting, but the magic of the experience is destroyed by the multitude of tourists in their yellow safety vests. There are several villages on the west and east shore with some nice Bai houses, but the novelty soon wears off. In fact, the most interesting thing I saw on this whole trip (my personal opinion) was the esplanade along the lake shore in Shuanglang: it really had the same atmosphere as a mediterrenean port village, with cafés (excellent espresso, by the way) and restaurants and galleries and a very striking modern architecture that blends in well with the more traditional houses.

“Just a Lake....”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Though the Chinese seem to consider the lake a big deal, we found it rather unimpressive. Beware of venues where they charge 60 RMB--or even more--just to get near the lakeshore.

“Beautiful lake shore”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

You can go cormorant fishing on the lake which is fun, but obviously touristy. Another great option is to hire bikes and explore the lake sure and the surrounding villages, especially on the west side of the lake near Xi Zhou where there are many fascinating villages and a brand new and beautifully paved road along the lake.
