I stayed here in May 2011, when it had been open just one month. Run by young Chinese people, who made me feel so welcome, I cant wait to go back one of these days. They organised a great excursion around the huge lake and several themed dinner evenings. Great place for comfort, feel and price.

Great place located just on the outside of the old town. Their staff is quite awesome, some of the friendliest staff I've ever come across. Their English is good and they seem to go the extra mile to make your stay more comfortable. They have a large common area with guitar, piano, bongos, pool-table and a projector and a cute dog that runs around chasing the cat or crashing into stuff :) On the outside they grow their own vegetables and there is a nice relaxing common area there as well.

The room we had was spotless and done in a very nice and simplistic way. They also come with a telly, but be aware that channels in China don`t show much English stuff.

The food is great and its cheaper than most western places in the old town. I would recommend this place to anyone who goes to Dali. This place is one of the most professional places i have ever stayed.

We stayed for 2 nights.

We stayed at Five Elements for three nights in a room for three and it was spacious and comfortable. They serve great breakfasts and the staff are friendly and helpful, especially Venessa. They have movie nights, dumpling-making nights etc and the common area is comfortable, spacious and conducive to meeting other travellers. Location great being just opposite the road from one of the gates into the old town of Dali. I would stay there again.

This is a lovely guesthouse across the main highway from Dali old town. Good instructions and easy to find coming from train station via bus. My room was huge twin with private bathroom. Very clean and comfortable. Reasonable price. About a 10 min walk to the main action in Dali old Town. The staff here are so lovely and make you feel at home. The girls at reception helped me book train tickets free of charge. Breakfast was nice. Really good common area for a few beers and to play pool. They also have a projector with DVDs can watch at night. They have a dog and cat which also hang out in the common area. The dog is absolutely beautiful and loves pats. My only gripe is that the wifi was pretty useless but I used Internet in cafes in old town so it was okay.

Dear Jessica, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. And happy that we can help with train tickets booking. Sorry about the wifi. It's a bit slow and does not work well in all the rooms though it's fine in the common area. We asked the supplier to lift the bandwidth, but they just couldn't because of our location.

This comfortable friendly hostel is a great deal. It is a large complex with a pleasant open garden where they grow their own vegetables, having hanging seats, and bubbling water in a man made stream, and in a large fountain. There is a rooftop terrace where you can clean and dry clothes. They have a pool table, shelves of book (take one, leave two), a big screen, and a wooden bar where they allowed my 22 yr old daughter to mix a drink they didnt know. The rooms are clean with the standard hard Chinese beds, screens in the windows (and also electric mosquito zappers but you need to bring your own repellent tabs to put in them). The cute golden retriever still acts like a puppy even though he is big. He followed us into town one evening, and even came into the restaurant and wouldnt leave. We had to call the hostel to come get him, and the next day they had put a leash on him. The only downside of the hotel is that you have to cross the eight lane divided highway to get into the old town (but then you are right there). Crossing the unbusy highway demands the same confidence and patience as crossing any Chinese street, so this is not much of a problem.

Thanks so much for your positive review and mention of details. We are sorry that we hadn't told you that we offer repellent tabs. The puppy still likes following guests into the town so that she is being chained. Truly, the highway is kinda busy. Thanks again for your stay.

We arrived at almost midnight at Five Elements Hostel Dali, and the restaurant was closed. But the staffs are so helpful so that we can get something to eat. During our 2 nights stay, our group are quite troublesome, but the staffs maintain their friendliness. English speaking staffs, helpful and friendly. The staffs also went extra mile in giving extra services to it guests.
The dorm bed exceed our expectation, the mattrees are soft and comfy. It has hanger and light for every bed. And we also got 2 thick and very comfy blanket. It's comfy to sleep around chilly weather, very very best price, it's all more than you can expect from a hostel !

The Five Elements common area is really well designed and funky looking. Lots of comfy places to hang out. They also have a cute golden retriever puppy and two black and white cats. So cute! It does get a little chilly at night in the winter because there's no insulation, but I found that the bedroom was warm enough for me.

I stayed in a double room and it looked like it was straight out of Ikea. Comfy cozy and clean.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, but I thought the way they reserved bus tickets for us was a bit weird. They didn't give us a receipt or give us the tickets beforehand, just walked us to the bus stop the next day and got us on the bus while they picked up the tickets they had reserved the previous day. In the end it worked out, but we were a little nervous about handing money over and not getting anything in return until we were actually on the bus.

The food was yummy and they have events to participate in during certain days of the week, We were there for the movie night (Ice Age 4 woohoo!) and it was nice to relax on the bean bag chairs and watch it projected on the wall. After Ice Age we also requested they play Spirited Away and they did. So cool. The also had a dumpling making class that we didn't attend, but that was probably cool too.

Overall, I highly recommend this hostel, just be aware of the informal ticket booking system they have.

Thanks for your review. You must be a cool person. No flattering. Yeah, the ticket booking system need to be improved. While we promise all the guests will get on the bus we book for them before the system getting better.
