We stayed a total of almost three weeks, and found this to be one of the loveliest places we have ever stayed in China. Its far more like a homestay than a guesthouse/hotel, with plenty of amenities to enable you to really kick back, a friendly atmosphere and a quiet courtyard. The rooms are actually suites, with a living and a sleeping area as well as bathroom, and are very clean, as is the whole property. I don't want to say much more as I'd like to return next year and hopefully there'll be some space.....I come to Dali every year so I know that this place for this price is really outstanding.

Rainbows Nest was a great place to stay. Not your usual guesthouse, but more like having your own place while going about your business.
The apartments are basic but well appointed, comfortable, clean and quiet. Spacious and light. You can enjoy the occasional company of other guests/ semi-residents in the communal courtyard. Shops, restaurants and bars are a stone-throw away. The location is really convenient, near the town centre, but very quiet! Good night sleep!
Rainbow and Marc are doing a great job, brilliant hosts! They are accessible and easy-going, genuine, reliable, helpful, friendly, relaxed and good company.

I liked Rainbow’s Nest so much in 2011 that I returned again in Oct. 2012, this time for 23 days. I traveled with two friends (three retired seniors) so we rented a two-bedroom apartment on the first floor facing the peaceful garden, fishpond and the sunny courtyard. The courtyard was a place to sit in the sun and also a place where met and talked with other guests. We went out for dinner with Rainbow and other guests as a group on several occasions.
The apartment had everything we needed including an equipped kitchen and a fridge. I particularly liked the Chinese poem painted on one of the walls in the living room.
The location of Rainbow’s Nest is within a few minutes walking distance of everything we needed or wanted to see in Dali.
Rainbow was so helpful with our touring needs by arranging a car and driver for us on four occasions. The driver did not speak English, however, Rainbow creatively arranged for him to phone her on his cell phone if we needed to communicate with him. We did some wonderful tours around the lake, to several other towns and markets, to hot springs, and to a Taoist mountain. She also arranged for our bus trips to Lijiang and back to Kunming.
Rainbow was always available to answer questions, make recommendations, or just to chat over a cup of tea. Her warm and hospitable personality brought life and laughter to an already cheery guesthouse.

Room Tip: Some of the bedrooms on the street can be noisy at times. Inner rooms are just fine.

While small with only a handful of units, Rainbow's Nest is quite unlike any other guesthouses you'll find in Dali. Aside from being very clean, tranquil and located near the center of the old town on a quiet street, the typical atmosphere is more like a small community than a guesthouse.

Rainbow is the sincere, honest and very helpful owner who along with her partner have created a wonderfully peaceful and welcoming home away from home, which I hesitate to trumpet too loudly, lest I give away this secret little gem to the masses....but hey, she deserves more business!
I myself have been at Rainbow's Nest for quite some time now – and Rainbow has become a very good friend, so I figured I should at long last input the review it genuininely deserves. I'm not alone, as you can see, in loving this little place.
Long term is what many guests often choose to do here, whether it be weeks, months, or in a couple of cases, years!...though the rooms are available for a night or few as well.

While the rooms may seem a bit on the expensive side for some people when compared to other Dali guest houses and hostels listed here, one must realize all the added amenities to understand the real value of this place! For example, all the units have at least a bedroom, bathroom & sitting room, but most also include small kitchens as well - with a sink, electric cookers, and a small fridge. They are basically simple, but complete apartments - so if you tire of eating out every night or just prefer to hit the markets and make your own advernturous meals, no problem. If this isn't important to you, the cheaper units are just as nice but without the kitchen, and have the added benefit of large windows that overlook the lush courtyard garden with it's little fountain. All units have use of the washing machine, wifi and courtyard.

On occasion, if folks are inclined, Rainbow and other residents will hold little casual dinner parties which are always nice and a great way to interact with your neighbors, which often enough tun out ot be rather interesting, cool folks.
Rainbow also helps set you up with excursions, drivers and info if you need it....and she never has, as far as I know been known for aggressively pushing packages & tours on you that you don't want.

Truth be told, if you are looking for a thumping backpacker scene, this really isn't your place... but if you need some peace & quiet to do your thing, or as a refuge, then Rainbow's Nest really is ideal.

Really, the only negatives I can think of (so that you know I'm not a paid adverisment) are the occasional loudmouths that walk down an otherwise silent street from time to time in the middle of the night or someone banging on the door of the adjecent guesthouse...but that's no fault of Rainbow's. On the rare occasions when the sky remains completely overcast for days on end, the huge solar heated water tanks may run cool after a few days... but you can always use the electric shower downstairs.

Yeah, Rainbow's Nest is great!

We spent 2 and half month's here. We really enjoyed the traditional Chinese courtyard, the comfortable environment and the other friendly guests staying there. It has a very homely and relaxed feel in a prime location just far enough away from the bustle of the busy tourist streets. The apartments we stayed in were clean and equipped with a basic kitchen that included a refrigerator. The owners, Rainbow and Marc have managed to create a pleasing sense of community, while the apartments provide space for private relaxation.

Rainbow´s nest is the best place we have ever stayed at. The location is perfect, everything you need is near, and situated in a quiet part of Dali old town. The apartments are all very clean, neat, beautifully decorated and soo comfortable. The courtyard is a nice place to hang out, with a relaxing fountain. The owners are very helpful and made us welcome upon arrival and through our whole stay.

We love this place and will definetly come back.

Rainbow's nest is a very cosy nest, a prefect place to stay. This is a traditional Chinese house with a beautiful courtyard. My 9 years old daughter loves to water the flowers, feed the goldfish, and draw her pictures on the big wooden table in the courtyard. The owners, Rainbow and Mark, are so helpful and friendly.
