The location is spectacular with sweeping views of the fields and mountains all around. The rooms are magnificent and are a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the big cities nearby. The staff were amazing and were at our service whenever needed. Be sure to order the fish and desert a day in advance. If you are planning to go to the altitudes, be sure to have their Ginger Tea. Their Ginger alcoholic beverage is not so bad either. Guides are more than just guides...they are personal conceierges. You will want to stay longer than you plan to...2 nights are not enough. Awesome. Can't wait to go back some day soon.

Room Tip: It seems as though all of the rooms are great. You just need to specify whether or not you want kin...

We were a family group of 16 traveling in China. We ranged from 8 years old to 73 years old. We all loved our stay there. The staff was exceptional and made it very unique and special. The staff were often found playing games with the children or talking about the Chinese history and culture with the adults. There were even staff who came in on their time off. The personal service was exceptional. The food was delicious. We took advantage of the many unique opportunities they offered such as bicycling, a tour of the market and shopping for food for dinner, cormorant fishing, tea plantation tour and learning to batik. It was obvious that all who worked there felt a great sense of pride for the center. Our favorite spot was the upper level terrace. There you had a wonderful view of the mountains and the rice paddies. It was a favorite stay for our family and one we will always remember. Needless to say there were tears shed when we left!

Great place to experience the relaxing pace of Dali. Good food, helpful staff and nice views from the terrace. Take advantage of the bikes and the uncrowded road along the lake or visit the market and shop for food for the kitchen.

The Linden Centre is one of the nicest places you will stay. It is more like a home. You are made welcome from the moment you set foot in the place.
The hotel is a lovingly restored merchant house built in 1948, and boasts the equivalent heritage rating as the Great Wall.
Brian Linden is always on hand, and ready to tell his tales of the origins of the hotel.
You can have calligraphy lessons, go to the market with the chef, in fact take part in all parts of local life.
We hired bikes one day (foc) and went for a ride round lake Erhai
The rooms are very comfortable, but beware - there are no TVs! Guests are encouraged to socialise.

Thank you for your comments. We’re glad you were able to experience the Linden Centre with Brian and the rest of our team, and we always appreciate comments on both the heritage of our hotel and the extra experiences we provide to guests. Yes, you are correct, we intentionally do not put TVs in guest rooms to encourage guests to socialize and learn more about this beautiful village. But we do have a common-use TV room where you may watch movies, sports events and other programming.

In April, my husband and I took part in a photo retreat at the Linden Centre. We stayed there for eight days and nights. Each day was a wonderful adventure that began with a great breakfast and ended with a delicious dinner. During the day we visited interesting villages and experienced the culture of the Yunnan province. The accommodations and attention to detail were wonderful and the staff was fantastic. Our day trips were always accompanied by attentive staff members who acted as our guide and interpreter, helping us to negotiate a new country!

Sorry for taking so long to review the Linden centre.
Stayed for 4 nights in Sept 2012 with my 86 year old father and also my Chinese friend.

From entering to leaving, the centre employees were polite and extremely helpful. Admittedly they took a liking to my father and his age and excellent health.

The location of the 3 courtyards is literally on the edge of a very large farming field and on the perimeter of a beautiful mountain range. Also within an old town that has so much charm - no mod cons here.
From one of the courtyard roofs you can simply watch the world go by, also witnessing the scenery. We were fortunate to also see both the primitive and modern techniques of harvesting being employed at the same time.
The centre has much history - you don't need to search for it - its everywhere and the centre has been well preserved.
Yes you do hear noises at night, however the only things you do hear are voices - not cars, lorries and people drinking in bars.If you require a disco - wrong place to visit. They do have a bar managed all day and yes you do hear the odd discussions of people talking - get used to it as you cannot stop people
The food served is good.
In the evening if you want to walk or I presume for when it rains they have a games room with table tennis, snooker etc.
The staff were most helpful- very knowledgable about the centre heritage and Dali in general.

Yes you don't get the luxuries of a 4 star hotel that the nightly price suggests, neither do you get a room phone nor TV.
We arranged transfer from the airport. Fairly long drive (50 mins) but scenic around the lake. Well worth not having to haggle with local taxis.
This is one area that has maintained traditional cultures of China. Small price to pay in a world changing so fast
If i'm in the area again I will stay there.

Thank you very much for your kind words, and we are thrilled to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay. Many guests comment on our unique location, which is a far cry from the busy city life many travelers experience in China. Because part of our mission is to encourage guests to explore this special village and learn more from our staff, we do not put televisions in each individual guest room. Also, after receiving many guest comments regarding voices or noise at night from the bar, we have recently finished remodeling a new bar area for guests to enjoy at night, away from guest rooms to ensure others have a more peaceful evening. Thank you again.

Stayed here for two nights with two small children. The hotel itself is stunning and the staff are great. The surrounding village of Xizhou is extremely attractive. Went on some excellent bike rides in the nearby countryside, including alongside the beautiful lake Erhai. Really enjoyed the market tour organised by the hotel. Hope to return soon.
