“After 5 weeks in China, Sam's is the best value so far”

My wife and I are traveling with two teenage boys and Sam's family rooms were perfect. Large clean rooms at a great price. Getting to know Sam, the manager, was a pleasure. He speaks great English and really went out of his way to be helpful. I would disregard the negative review above - that person obviously needs to leave China..... For us, Sam's was a great find. Sam and his family are local Bai people and eager to please and open to constructive criticism. We helped them improve their apple pie recipe - try it!!

Sam's Hotel has a lot going for it. Staying in old town can be noisy especially when the bars close around 1a.m. and tourists of all stripes come staggering out loudly into the streets. Sam's is nestled between Old Town and the mountains, very near the South Gate in a quiet area with no bars and few restaurants. But the area where you can find all this is about a 5 or 10 minute walk away.
I found this hotel after spending the first two nights in Old Town itself. It has better beds and cleaner rooms than what I saw as I looked about for a replacement hotel. There are also good views of the lake from the upper floors. The owner speaks good English. The young girls who operate the front desk speak less but seem very willing to try. There is wifi in the common room downstairs. The girls will do laundry if you need them to. Sam's ran me 80 yuan for a single with a comfortable bed and that's a bargain in Dali. I saw hotels with lesser facilities charging twice that.

when we arrived in dali we wanted to save some money and decided to stay in sam's hotel in dali (next door to jim's tibetan hotel). the room was not very clean but it was cheap so we didn't complain. we went for a drink in the bar which is decorated in this strange blockwood kind of style attracting chinese tourists as they seem to love this style. the worst however was the coming back of the other (chinese) guests: this hotel mainly has chinese tourists. they started to play mahjong and were very noisy slamming doors, put on their tvs maximum level and got drunk till late night. early next morning many were leaving turning on the motors of their cars and have it run for a long time and with loud voices they said goodbye. and so did we: we moved to the neighbour hotel and finally had a good night and quiet. if you like renao (chinese for noisy and many people) we suggest try this hotel, if you want a clean quiet room: don't go.

China is nothing like we've been told. I stayed in Old Dali in Yunnan in two hotels/hostels and they were both beautiful and great value. Sam's Hotel was the perfect spot to rest in a big bedroom (with ensuite Western bathroom). Later I headed further up the mountain to stay at the Lily Pad - which was another traditional looking Bai house. Both hosts, Sam and later Erin very kind, helpful and generous and I felt at home from the second I arrived till the moment I left.

In our two months traveling in China, this hotel stood out as one of the best values and most enjoyable stays. It's not luxurious, but it is a solid 3-star hotel with good, clean rooms in a courtyard setting just outside the old Dali city wall. A very congenial Bai family runs it, and they will cook up some great meals for you anytime as well as help with bus and other travel arrangements. They also did all our laundry and let us leave our luggage for a couple days when we went off hiking. Our kids ended up playing with their kids. They also have a nice happy hour spot on the top floor deck overlooking the city, lake and mountains.

The hotel is an 8-minute walk to the center of things. I can't say it's right in the middle of the tourist shops, but that made it quieter and a bit outside the fray (Dali can have quite a few tourists).

We found this hotel since it was right next door to Jim's Tibetan Guest House (in most guide books). Jim's wanted over twice the room rate as Sam's and Sam's looked just as good or better to me.

Sam's is a wonderful Hotel! First, Sam speaks English. That always helps get things right. Second, the place is lovely: nicely if simply decorated and very clean. Third, we got a very spacious family room, which is actually two adjunct rooms with a giant (bigger then King size!) bed for us, two full size beds for the kids, and two sets (one in each room) of tables and chairs from heavy Chinese wood and stone, very comfortable for our stuff and the kids writing and drawing. Fourth, it is very well located just outside the South Gate, which saves us the hassle of the old city, but close enough to every place we want to go to. Fifth, and foremost, they are all SOOOOOO welcoming and nice, you just can't beat that service!

It started with our call to see if we can make a reservation there. Sam asked for our bus details and suggested he'll come to pick us up. It continued when we told him we have a reservation at another hotel, which we found out does not have western toilets, and need to cancel it. Sam told us he'll take care of it. A few minutes later we got a text message from him that it's done. Then, when we found out we arrived at the wrong station, the car for us arrived in minutes. When we arrived at the hotel, a half a dozen staff members came out to greet us. During our entire stay, whenever we needed something, we got it in minutes and with nothing but smiles: extra towels, purified water, more chop-sticks, more water for the tea, advise where to go to eat, where to go hiking, how to get to... whatever.

Sams Hotel, the place that aspires to be your 'home away from home” and what a great decision has this been for us to stay there!
