“Old, dirty and unconcerned”

What a dump! The rooms were old and I don't know why this is categorized as a B&B. The worst breakfast, a combination of what was left over from the night before, cold coffee served with cold milk. Our totally inefficient local tour guide from Wendy Wu made no effort to make arrangements to have a decent breakfast, all the elements were around all she had had to do was to explain to the staff how to serve things and to have the milk boiled. The most useless guide ever! None of the hotel staff spoke any of the mayor languages I speak, English, Spanish, Italian or French so there was no way to communicate except for our ineficient local guide. There were 3 other foreign tour companies staying in this hotel. The store staff surprise, surprise spoke some English.

I am giving the hotel an average rating since it is not their fault that our expectations per the Wendy Wu Catalog were not met.

According to Wendy Wu Tours

Accommodations in China
Wendy Wu books and confirms all the accommodations for your China vacation. You will stay at some of the most iconic and beautiful hotels China has to offer.

Not one of our hotels in the entire tour were the most iconic or the most beautiful........ certainly not this one.

There are only two hotels budget travellers are allowed to stay in Turpan and this unfortunately is one of them. I have no comment to make about the rooms above ground but budget travellers beware. You will be directed to a dingy basement for the princely sum of 50 yuan (£6) per person, where you will be met with a musty smelling, paint-peeling three bed dorm with a concrete floor. Despite at least twenty of these rooms existing below ground the hotel management refuses to segregate the sexes and piles males and females into the same room despite protestations that you would rather be with your own kind! The only concession the management will make is agreeing to give you the whole room for 150 yuan (a whopping £15) if two of you don't want to share with the opposite sex. The musty, damp smell of rot and crumbling plaster is all pervasive and the only consolation for no air-con is that the dungeonous room hasn't seen a ray of sunshine since the hotel was built. The experience is nothing other than daylight robbery and the Chinese authorities know that they have budget travellers over a barrel because the only other permitted place in town for a back-packer is at least twice the price. I have no other adjectives to describe my disgust and outrage at the local government insisting that foreigners must stay here, when there are many pleasant, friendly and airy hotels in town for a fraction of the price. This is monopoly gone stark raving mad!!
This all is such a great pity because the location of the hotel near the old city, at the end of a beautiful vine trellis with the atmospheric outdoor vine-draped John's Cafe is idyllic.

Room Tip: If you can run to 200 yuan you will be given a fairly 'tired' basic room on the first floor...

This hotel was old and run doen It did have good Air Conditioning and elevator. The room was OK but the shower was poor. John's restaurant was neaby and had great western food at a low price. Hotel was OK as I only was there one night.

Room Tip: Only stayed one night

We had no presumptions about this hotel as we booked it for 360 Yuan per twin room. We stayed for 3 nights and were quite satisfied. The location is excellent; in the centre of the city. The property is on one of the few streets that are covered in grape vines, which give it a very pleasant setting. The rooms are all quiet as they are set well back from the road. They are spacious but they have a tired feel. If you are simply using them to sleep they are adequate. The staff are agreeable and friendly. There are however some other advantages. To the south side of the hotel but still on the property there is Turfan's version of John's Cafe. This is a splendid vine covered outdoor area that is cool and relaxing even on a hot day of the kind we experienced. The staff are friendly. The food is not great in taste or size of servings so I would not recommend it for anything other than sitting out till late drinking cold beer or spirits. Breakfast was included but one should get to the buffet early. The staff try hard but the offerings are not great, though you can order freshly cooked things such as eggs.
For lunch or dinner there are some excellent Uighur restaurants nearby. Another advantage is the location of an superb bread bakery just south of the main gate. They bake the best "non" in Western China perhaps. Go early in the morning. Skip breakfast and have a coffee in the lobby.
While we staying there a young entrepreneur had set up a small coffee stand in the main lobby serving an excellent and wide range of coffees. This is no Starbucks, but much classier strong percolated coffee

This is a jaded hotel, long past its best. This is the end of the season, so that probably doesn't help. The room is ok and the bathroom very dated. The hot water was difficult to regulate. There is wifi in the lobby. The food in the Muslin restaurant is poor and pricy. Breakfast was a strange selection of chips, kebab, braised celery, boiled eggs, peanuts, bread and jam. I would definitely try a different hotel, rather than return.

Spent several nights on a trip with Old Road. Have advised Old Road to avoid the place especially at the inflated price they charge (400+ Y). Rooms are standard size, no lock on the door to speak off ( this is in the front section of the hotel) , passive-aggressive front desk who you have to beg for the wifi code. To be fair the room was sunny (through the grime on the window) and quiet. Walls are crumbling with water infiltration close to the bathroom. Dismal breakfast in quality or quantity.
John's cafe is behind the hotel, charming staff, bikes, real coffee, wifi, a reprieve from the hotel!

Our itinerary was changed at the last moment and we were booked into this hotel by our tour agent, who had assured us proudly that this was a 3-star hotel. After driving through a long, small road with little street lighting, we pulled up in front of a rather shabby-looking building which had clearly seen better days. The sleepy-eyed receptionist on duty greeted us by coughing without attempting to cover her mouth. So much for first impressions.

Our room in the main building was a disappointment. Paint was peeling off the walls, there were dustballs under the table and bed, and only half the lights in the room were working. The bathroom was serviceable with a western-style toilet (thank goodness), but the bathtub was filthy and there were rust spots in places. While the sheets seemed clean, the disposable house slippers looked like they had been worn by the last guests who stayed in our room - there were dirt smudges on the slippers. The hotel's dimly-lit hallways and common areas lent to its bleak and cheerless atmosphere. The hotel is also located some distance from the main tourist area and eateries, making this a very unfriendly option if you don't have a car.

The hotel is crawling with Chinese tour groups, which can be noisy especially early in the morning. Breakfast was a dismal spread of congee and variety of pickled vegetables that looked like they came straight from a can or packet from the supermarket down the street.

I know not to expect much from accommodations in smaller towns like Turpan, but Turpan Hotel is a clear 'miss', especially given its advertised rack rate of 580rmb per night. It was probably worth only half of that.

Room Tip: The hotel staff also told us there was no wifi available initially but then seemed to 'find'...
