Owner description: Carved out of a hill, the largest Buddha in the world dates back to the 8th century.

The Leshan Giant buddha is one of the most breathtaking places in the Sichuan province. Not only for the buddha, all the enclosure and the temple area is amazing, starting with the main temple and the mountain, with the different ways that crosses through caves and stiff stairways.

My suggestion is that make the whole visit: go further from the lesshan buddha and get into the inner part of the park crossing the jungle area, the oriental one (the dongfang fodu gongyuan). You'll have to pay an extra cost but is really worthy. After a while you will enter a big cave and you will get out to see a giant buddha carved in rock, and next to it, an enormous and stiff stairs that goes down. The landscape is amazing.

The picture will never tell you how small you are. You will only know how small you are when you happen to be there. I never have the chance to hike up at the side path beside the Leshan Giant Buddha. I only managed to take the cruise (there's a wide river in front of the giant Buddha). But I can only describe what I noticed.....the height of any person is just lower than the giant Buddha's toe. I am not sure if you can imagine how big this Buddha statue is now. This should be just another wonder of the world.

This was featured in the movie 风云.. Nice view from the boat. However, there are plans by the local government to build a shelter to prevent it from being erroded by the weatrher as it craved on rocks. If that happens, then you wont be able to see the whole buddha.

Our tour package included a drive from Chengdu to Leshan (almost 2-hours) to see the Giant Buddha, Lunch in Leshan and then a drive to Emeishan (45-minutes) for an overnight stay to see the beautiful Mount Emeishan. From Leshan, we boarded a ferry boat from the pier and cruised the river to the Giant Buddha that is located almost directly across the city of Leshan. Our tour boat arrived at the Giant Buddha around 10:00 AM and there was only one other tour boat at the same location. The ferry boat operator stopped directly in front of the Giant Buddha for photos, and then the boat was moved just around the rock cliff to get a view of a narrow pathway that had been carved out of the side of the mountain just above the river (see photo attached). After seeing the Buddha from the water, the ferry boat then made a stop at a pier below the Buddha so you can get off and walk a pathway to the Giant Buddha park at the top of the hill. Note: wear comfortable walking shoes because you will be walking uphill all the way to the top of this trail. From the top, you can get a glimpse of the head of the Giant Buddha and look down a cliff to see the body. For the adventurous, you can take an optional trek down along a narrow path down the side of the cliff to see the Buddha from a platform at the foot of the Buddha.

We found that visiting the Giant Buddha and the Park a was definitely a worthwhile trip from Chengdu - the area is very picturesque. However, I would recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds of tourists.

It is overpriced with the 90 yuan entrance fee. Very busy with a lot of chinese groups with guides with microphones. If you want to see it try to find a way to go and see it fro the island. No pay and no crowds. The temples are so commercialised i cant imagine it has anything to do with buddism.
