“Excellent B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2012

Stayed for one night.Very clean. Beautiful house and outdoors. Stayed in the Bird of Paradise room (beautiful). Good private parking lot (though it's on a serious hill). Hosts very friendly. Tasty breakfast (although they could have offered more food). The Internet didn't work at all, which is why this is a four-star review.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights. We were very nicely accomodated with an early check in.
Upon our arrival we asked for a clean bathroom mat. Later, a noted on our bed informed us that it had fallen apart in the wash and a new one would be purchased. That is how shabby it was. This is the sort of thing that should be spotlessly clean for each new guest. The towels were NOT new, maybe new to the inn if they had been purchased at Goodwill. Bathroom fixtures were clean but the bathroom walls were dirty, as were the windowsills and any other horizontal surface in the entire bathroom - door panels, etc. Other surfaces, dressers, etc. in the room had been dusted.
It would be a nice upgrade for this B & B to mount the TV on the wall. It is 2012, not 1912. We all like modern amenities and most travellers expect a television in the room that one can watch from a comfortable position - not lying at the foot of the bed, looking around a bed post. We need to know the weather forecast and like to watch some news occasionally.
A choice or a range of times for breakfast would be an improvement for guests not wishing to breakfast at 7:00 a.m. on a weekday.
A choice of breakfast menu would be an improvement also. Yogurt, fruit, cereal, instead of sausages and eggs 2 days in a row would make for some healthier choices.

See photos below of the finial on top of bed, and windowsills.

On the good side, the inn is clean and the innkeepers very nice. We had the magnolia room, which had an attached parlor. The location is great within walking distance of lots of restaurants.

On the bad side, the comforts of a hotel are not here. The furniture is Victorian style and pretty uncomfortable. Breakfast is at 7 am weekdays. There is kitsch on every table and in every corner. The tv in our room was in the closet, and not viewable from the bed. There was only 1 chair to watch from.

If you.re into Victorian era stuff and an old house, this may be the place. If you are looking for the comforts of a hotel, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Avoid the magnolia room if you want to watch tv.

Thank you for complimenting the cleanliness and the Innkeepers. We appreciate you also! Yes, it is true this is a Victorian Mansion from 1898 with period antiques from that time period. The décor appeals to historic minded guests who seek out National Historic Registered properties like ours. We are the only Bed and Breakfasts in Birmingham City and the 7 County area surrounding the City center. There are about 50 chain hotels in our market area guests can choose. THANK YOU for coming and trying something different during your travels!

My husband and I stayed here for two nights so that I could attend a training class before continuing on for a visit with family. We really enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately, we did not get to meet Sheila but Ira was a more than a gracious host on his own. Our room was lovely (the rose room) as were the breakfasts and morning conversations with our fellow guests. The building is located in a very nice, regentrified part of the city that has some very nice dining options. The only thing that I would have changed about our room is the amount of ambient light entering the room through the door and windows as I am a light sleeper. But, the even bigger disappointment we had with our stay was that it couldn't be longer. We would definately stay here again if in the area.

Room Tip: The Rose Room is beautiful and the old fashioned bath tub great but know that the room looks into th...

That's great that you could come for a work related training class and then onto vacation. Both of our Inns are 2 blocks from edge of University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama's largest employer when the Hospitals are included in the count. Each week there are guests attending workshops, symposiums, or taking degree courses at the campus or hospitals. Since your visit in 2012, the rejuvenation and upgrading of our surrounding community has advanced even more. Now there are 41 restaurants and evening entertainment venues within a 3 block walkable area, a renewed interest in historic preservation, and new community parades and festivals. Five Points Historic District is alive and doing well. Please come again to see what we mean. Also please consider staying at our newly restored 2nd Victorian Mansion from 1898, 2 blocks away, at the HASSINGER DANIELS MANSION BED AND BREAKFAST. Thank you for being our guests!

We stayed 2 nights. On our arrival one of the first things I noticed was the dirty bathroom mat. We asked for a replacement and the owner obliged, but had I said nothing we would have had to step out of the tub onto that dirty mat or else use one of the two really shabby towels allowed per person. The tub, sink and toilet were clean enough but certainly not the walls, door, window sills(dead bugs, dirt), and the finials on the top of the bed posts were white with dust. The sunroom attatched to our room (Magnolia Room) was almost filled with dusty old dolls, costumes, and a plethora of mismatched uncomfortable furniture. Draperies were of many colours and sizes and covered in dust. The television is housed on a very high shelf in the closet in order to maintain the integrity of the period of the home, supposedly, but could have been mounted on a wall with little difficulty, providing a much better viewing experience than what we had which was to lie on the bed, heads at the bottom, peering around a bedpost. The was less than one foot of space between the bed and the wall on one side of the bed. Awkward in the middle of the night when one tried to find the bathroom.
There was also a great deal of light pollution from the light fixtures left on in the halls all night, through the transoms over the doors.
Breakfast was fine if you do not mind a variation on scrambled eggs and sausages 2 days in a row. Breakfast was served at 7:00 a.m. On a Monday which might be fine for a business person but is really too early for a vacationer. The meal was served at a large table, forcing familiarity when perhaps one wanted to eat quietly. I think a number of smaller tables would have been better for me.
I looks into some of the unoccupied, open rooms and thought they would have been perfect for a bordello.
I am beginning to think I am not the B & B kind of person. I have stayed in dozens but this one did not meet my standards.

We appreciate our guests who enjoy staying at a National Historic Registered property with antiques. This guest wrote , "I am beginning to think I am not the B&B kind of person". From their comments, this appears true. Wood antiques, which we have in the Inn, sometimes have lighter areas due to their use and age which the experts on the PBS "Roadside Antique Show" explain make the piece more valuable, rather than dirty. We bought a new bath floor map of same cream color to please this guest, which wasn't necessary since the other one was in good condition, intending to merit praise. The towels were brand new, purchased last week, and are not shabby. This room does have an overhead light in the hall near its historic clerestory door window, but guests for the past 8 years staying in this room have understood they are welcome at any time to turn that light off since there is enough light at night for others to see their way around. Our Bed and Breakfast offers a full hot cooked delicious breakfast, served in our beautiful dining room with crystal chandelier over head, fine china, silverware, fresh flowers, and guests enjoy their meals together. Other guests consider this a major highlight and one of the reasons they choose to come to a Bed and Breakfast where their presence and conversations are appreciated. Magazines commonly wish to photograph our common areas and the Inn has appeared in some movies. We wish this guest well in their future. Perhaps they would feel more comfortable in a modern chain hotel.

After spending a bit of time on the road the Cobb lane b&b was a welcomed luxury. The owner made us feel at home and comfortable as a guest in the inn. He directed us to points of interest and dining establishments as one would address a friend staying over.
Our room was spacious, warm and tastefully decorated.
Don't miss this gem if your traveling in the area and say hey to Ira for me.

My husband and I recently stayed here while travelling for the holidays. The house was a delight, the owners clearly put effort into their decorating. The staff was great, especially Kathleen. She greeted us warmly, patiently and knowledgeably answered all of our questions, and gave us delicious, fresh baked cookies from scratch! It felt much more like a "home away from home" than hotels do. Breakfast with Ira was very enjoyable, although a tad early at 7am each weekday. Parking was convenient and there was plenty to explore within walking distance. Ira and Sheila have a great bed and breakfast and they have decorated and staffed it well! We'll definitely be back.

We so enjoyed reading this review and their appreciative comments about our Assistant Innkeeper, Kathleen. We screen our staff carefully and she is a wonderful addition to our Inn. We are 3 blocks from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and hire graduate students who are serious students preparing for their careers and appreciate learning about the world from our world traveler guests. Thank you for coming!
