Our first and only visit to Leonardo's Italian Restaurant started a lot better than it ended with a decent bottle of pinot noir. After being seated things took a turn for the worse.
Our waiter was nice enough, but after ordering our appetizer, entree, and salad; 15 minutes later we had to ask for the house rolls, which seem to be a signature item. Then, after 20-30 minutes we still did not have our lone appetizer; which was understandable, given that it was a busy Friday night. At around the 40 minute mark, our salads finally arrived, which were nothing special given the price of their entrees. Within a minute of receiving our salads, our entrees arrived at the same time as our appetizer. Apparently, the manager sensed something was amiss; as she accompanied the serving crew to our table. We stated that we no longer wanted our appetizer because we had just gotten our salads and entrees; she then offered to hold our entrees for us until we were ready for them. The only problem with that was that they would be COLD by that time, so we kept them. I had the sausage, peppers, and onions, which were decent, although overpriced. The others entrees were tasty, but that did little to brighten this darkened meal. When we finished, the manager sensed our displeasure and did comp a couple of items.
Needless to say our first and last visit to Leonardo's will live in infamy. So, when craving Italian in Birmingham; do yourself a favor and make a reservation at a certain little place in Homewood or stay home and cook it yourself. You'll be glad you did.
