We eat there, either in the dining room or cafe, on a regular basis. Once a week at the cafe and at east once a month in the dining room. We love the food, services, and atmosphere. We know most of the staff: hosts, wait staff, and cooks. They know us by name. They remember what we order for drinks and have them ready as we sit down. The food is fresh, regional, and well presented. Last month, my favorite was grilled jumbo asparagus served with boiled egg and shaved parmigiana. Superb.

We enjoyed our dinner. Food is excellent, service is pretty good. The restaurant is very loud - combined with the closeness of the tables it is difficult to have a conversation. It is also most difficult to ignore happenings at the tables around you - especially when they're receiving free drinks from the bar.

I ate at this property for lunch today. I had the roasted pork loin (a signature dish), chardonnay (Stags Leap) and tiramisu. The food was still outstanding, and service was attentive. I will eat there again. The cliente is the affluent business person, as the tab was $60.00.

Frank Stitt has been rated by many publications as one of the best chefs in America and many times the top chef in the South. His 2 cookbooks should be staples for any serious cook. His 2 cornerstone restaurants in Birmingham - Highlands bar and grill, and Bottega - are a showplace and will not disappoint. I get to Birmingham around 3 times a year and always at least try to eat here.

This trip we had the Parmesean souffle and the carpaccio as appetizers and then the flounder and scallops for our main courses. They were tremendous as always. Everything is fresh and made with high standards. Service is good and the wine list is large. Its not inexpensive as you might suspect, but for a special meal it's a must stop.

From the excellent valet service on the driveway to being escorted to our table by the maître d, all references to the wait staff were excellent. Our waiter appeared like magic every time we needed him. The staff tuned their response to our expectations, and executed it perfectly. Some customers might wish to linger for 2-3 hours, and others like us, planned a relaxed meal but were out the door in 90 minutes. The appetizers we split were the shellfish. The quantity was perfect, the flavor extraordinary. Our main course, accompanied with wine, was the Appalachicola Flounder. It was attractively placed upon fresh seasonable vegetables. I gave the flounder an 8/10 score, it was slightly overcooked. The dessert we chose were the Italian doughnuts which were to die for. Our server had suggested them, and steered us in the right direction. Our table was on the edge of the balcony, from which we had a great view of the downstairs and patio dining areas. The weather was mild so the doors were open which contributed to a delightful dining experience.
