The family had a great time here at the museum. the grossology exhibit was interactive and educational. The fish of Alabama was also very good. The location was fantastic and easy parking makes this a must stop while in Birmingham.

The best times to visit is on a weekday afternoon. The school crowds can get rowdy and kind of pushy to younger kids. Unfortunately, common courtesy is not a requirement to buy a ticket anywhere.
The staff wasn't very helpful. They seemed bored and would constantly be on their cell phones. Only answered when asked but didn't know anything other than what was printed on the info graphics on the exhibits. They only seemed capable of knowing where things were (ie. the elevators) A map brochure would be seriously handy.
The food was terrible and expensive. There was an exhibit featuring the recent myplate change on nutrition recommendations but it was a shame that they either offered candy bars, and Coca Cola products in the lower level cafeteria. On the main lobby cafeteria, things weren't any better. It included a Pizza Hut, Build-a-Bowl, Hot off the Grill, Subway, and Red Mango. If there is such an emphasis on health what with the myplate exhibit, the science center aught to follow suit. As for expense, a cheeseburger cost $5.25, and according to my boyfriend was just a wad of tasteless calories.
I've been to the science center five or so years ago and the exhibits have changed very little. Since I brought along my 18 month old, there were a lot of new things I didn't really pay attention to that were pointed out to me. It would take perhaps 3 more visits for us to become bored maybe. A membership would pay itself off since parking is $5, adult tickets are $12 and you would also have access to participating Association of Science-Technology Centers.
All in all, I would go again on a full stomach on a weekday afternoon.

This science center may be the best hands on museum I have experienced. It has exhibits that will pique the interest of any child. The staff is friendly and helpful.

I used to take the kids and had excuses to be there. Now that they are getting older it's harder to get them to venture back. It's always a great excitement. New exibits. Love it.

I visited the McWayne when I was a kid and it was awesome back then too. I took my daughter recently and they have really updated the place. It has a little bit of everything. My daughter loved the aquarium where you can pet sharks and rays.
