Embassy Suites by Hilton Birmingham-Hoover
Ranked #9 of 80 Hotels in Birmingham
Reviewed February 1, 2014

Just up from south Ala for an appointment at UAB....only a three hr drive but decided to stay the night for sort of mini vacation.....checked this embassy out on line and they said plenty of rooms available.....got checked in but realized quite soon we had been givien a smoking room (9th floor has
Smoking rooms). Ended up in 802.......very very nice....reception was pleasant...our bad tender (Danny Tcatch) was extremely amiable...not many people there on this particular Fri night...so we had a nice visit...
And of course the breakfast was just right....a nice greeting ..and great omelet...fresh eggs were not available...then even extra service ....coming around with refills and picking up used plates....we would highly recommend location too...we did both wake up and the tobacco smell had actually drifted down a floor during the night.....but then that's the nature of smoke...its invasive....we would stay again...

Stayed: January 2014

Everything was great as usual. Nice location for a conference. The room was big and comfortable. The staff was all over putting out good food and beverages and the minute you put a plate down it was gone. Lunch was provided one day and it was outstanding.

I was there for a seminar and could have easily remained at the hotel the entire time since it was very cold that weekend. Did leave a couple of times and its location is very convenient to restaurants and shopping. Would certainly stay there again.

Very nice hotel! Suites are spacious and comfy. Pool/hot tub was nice, but strong chlorine. Enjoyed Manager's reception and breakfast was great (good cooked-to-order omelets)! Hotel is near several restaurants & mall.

This past weekend was my book club’s bonding meeting and we chose to come to Birmingham for an overnight retreat. Since one of our book club members works for the chain we were able to get discounted rooms. One of the suites was at the employee rate and the other was at the Family and Friends rate. So price wise this was an economical for our group of 10 females.

We booked the rooms online, unfortunately the member wasn’t able to book them at the same time and when we arrived for check-in we realized why. The hotel was booked. We noticed after our arrival they had two conventions at the hotel.

I wished the check in was easy and smooth because of our confirmations and the fact we arrived early. However, that was not the case. Upon our arrival, they told us one of our suites was ready and the other wasn’t. Fine, we would just hang out in the suite until the other room was ready. The desk clerk, Chris, told us the room was a smoking room. I looked at the member who booked the room and was questioning why we were getting a smoking room, however, we didn’t request it, but online booking sometimes is a bit funny. We immediately asked for a non-smoking room because a couple of the book club members suffer from asthma and I am actually allergic to cigarette smoke. We were informed because the hotel was book there were no other rooms available. We were just praying the room wasn’t smoky. Also, we were told our other room was either going to be on the fourth or fifth floor, the current room was on the ninth floor. We sucked it up, but I did ask why they had a smoking hotel when most hotels are going to nonsmoking and our Embassy in Montgomery, which is older, is nonsmoking. This hotel is only 3 years old.

The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous with granite desk clerk pods and water fountains in the foyers. The pictures online of the hotel do give you a good vision of how lovely the foyer is.
The hotel room actually didn’t smell too bad of smoke but we lit candles and Lysol and Febreeze the room. We booked two room suites with double beds. Each of the suites comes with a bedroom with double beds, living area with sofa sectional with chaise on one end, dining area with chairs as well as refrigerator and microwave. The open floor plan was great for our book discussion. Each room came with an Ipod speaker system. The bathrooms open into the bedroom as well as the living/dining area, which was quite convenient. The bathrooms were nicely done only issue I had was the shower head was too high for me to adjust, and I haven’t had that happen before. Our room looked out onto the woody area around the hotel.

The hotel is close to a lot of restaurants and shopping and if you aren’t afraid of the traffic not too far from the Summit.

The hotel provides and evening reception of wine, beer and mixed drinks and light appetizers mostly chips and dips. They also offer a full breakfast buffet with had an omelet station and the fixings for a southern style breakfast. I was just happy to have a nice Chocolate Pecan Caramel Cappuccino.

Although the hotel is newer and very well furnished, I noticed the wear and tear it is already experiencing. For example, in the smoking suite we had there were burn marks on the sofa sectional. The rooms are not soundproof we learned the hard way they weren’t. We also had a problem during the process with the second suite we checked into. Basically, we got the impression the rooms were already assigned and the clerk didn’t want to deal with the hassle of reassigning the room. The second suite they were trying to put us into had a king size bed instead of the double beds we had confirmation for. It was a hassle where the manager had to come and rectify. What should have taken a few minutes turned into an hour hassle requiring the room we eventually got to be cleaned and the member waiting so that we didn’t get ignored or worse made to take a king room. We were inconvenience by several things upon our check in and at some point you have to say enough, let someone else be inconvenience and this was long after check in time. Things worked out in the end, but not without some hassle.

It is a beautiful hotel although we didn’t get a chance to check out the pool and gym; we enjoyed the amenities we did partake in. I would definitely stay here again, but hopefully, not making reservations when they are booked.

Room Tip: Be clear on choosing nonsmoking rooms.

We were in town for the recent bowl game at Legion Field. It's about 15 minutes from downtown and cab rides are affordable. The included breakfast was fabulous, hot buffet and even made to order omelettes. Our room was spectacular, and the noise from other rooms with minimal (a huge pet peeve of mine). This hotel met my expectations for an Embassy Suites in every way but one, hence the deduction.

On rising to get ready for our bowl game... no hot water. Not a drop. My friend took a cold shower. I went without. Hours before we were to head into 40 degree weather, I was not about to lower my core temperature with a cold shower. And it was off for hours. I kept checking and it wasn't on when we left. It doesn't matter how nice the room is if basic services aren't functional. The front desk was stoic about the situation, so I took to corporate. It was over a week ago and I have yet to hear from Hilton on the matter.

FYI, this room was on a reward certificate.

Room Tip: I got an executive suite on the top floor that was fabulous.
