This is one of the best art museums in the South. I have been a few times and think the African art collestion is the jewel of this museum. Birmingham is very fortunate to have this in their downtown.

Have gone many times, for exhibitions as well as the general collection. Great place to take a visiting friend. First class collection for a small city museum.

Great Summer events, excellent seasonal art exhibits and rotating cultural areas. Very educational, but also a wonderful way to spend a day in the city. Plenty of parking, easy to access.

I had a few hours to kill between appointments and stopped by this museum. What a treat. Besides being free of charge (donations welcome), it has a really nice American art collection with a wide range of subjects and artists. The sculpture garden is really lovely, even though part of it was vacant at the time (November). Restaurant also looked nice. Located across the street from a great park close to City Hall, the library, and the Hotel Tutwiler. They also have lockers where you can store your bag between appointments.

If you are in the Birmingham, AL area before then end of the exhibit January 6, 2013, and you want a special treat, don't miss the Norman Rockwell exhibit. It is full of nostalgia for earlier and simpler times, but I was amazed at the extreme talent of Rockwell. You will see many of the paintings that were photographed for the magazine covers and enjoy the incredible detail that made the subjects look lifelike. You will also read the stories behind the paintings. Rockwell was a true student of life. And of course, there are walls filled with Saturday Evening Post covers, many with the original mailing labels which are faded but legible.

I would also recommend lunch in the museum restaurant. Excellent food and unique recipes. My friend and I share the fried grouper BLT on focaccia bread and a beet salad with creamy goat cheese. Excellent!
