“Excellent Aviation Museum!”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

I visited the Southern Museum of Flight upon the recommendation of a Police Officer at the Birmingham Airport! It was a very good "hot tip!" I was very impressed with this facility. The displays were very well done and the museum staff were friendly, knowledgeable and very professional.

Beyond the wonderful history of the Tuskegee Airmen and the work of NASA in Huntsville, I was unaware of the fact that there was so much more aviation history associated with Alabama. I was quite surprised!

The museum is very well laid out. One half is devoted to military aviation, while the other half is focused on general/commercial aviation and early flight. The aircraft displays, dioramas and audio/visual presentations are all very well done. There are also a number of interactive displays, films and flight simulators to entertain visitors of all ages. The museum also contains an archive and library for the aviation historian and student. I also understand that the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame is located here but I did not have a chance to visit it.

The only minor problem worth mentioning is that the museum is not that easy to find. Although located near the Birmingham International Airport, street directions to the museum are not all that clear in places. That said, if you are careful and watch for the signs closely, you should not have any trouble finding the place. (Its about 10-15 minutes from the airport terminal.)

The Southern Museum of Flight is well worth a couple hours to visit! Have fun!

“Good air museum for aviation enthusiasts.”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

A good air museum to take the kids. There are two wings to the museum, one wing contains small civilian aircraft, and the other military aircraft, such as those used to train the Tuskegee Airmen. There are exhibits on various aircraft engines, as well as a Russian Hind helicopter, a MIG 15 Fagot, and US aircraft such as a F-4, F-8. Finally, there are several flight simulators. There is an annex display area that was not open, but one could drive by and see a F-14, and A-12 spyplane.

“Worth seeing”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

Couple weekends ago I visited Southern Museum of Flight and was very impressed. Something that didn't look like much from the outside turned out to be very interesting and worth seeing. Decent amount of airplanes - mainly smaller models. In the military area they had some bigger jets and helicopters. Great staff and they have a AAA discount. The only thing I didn't like is that the Outdoor airplane collection is connected to the local airport and only accessible to view from the street through the fence. You can't walk close to the exhibits - a lot of which are very interesting and impressive. Also, some flight simulators are only available for people with pilot licenses.

“Something for everyone.”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

The museum contains both civilian and military exhibits. I didn't realize there was so much aviation history coming out of Alabama until I went here. The staff were friendly and helpful. There are interactive exhibits to engage the young ones, and military exhibits taking a thoughtful slice of history and presenting it in easily consumable bites. If you have any interest in flight, this is a great introduction.
