Owner description: This historic museum traces the journey of the civil rights advocates of the 1950s and 60s, who changed the course of American history. The struggle for equality for Black Americans is chronicled here, from the Jim Crow laws in the 1800s to the freedom rides, sit-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s.

If you know anything about the civil rights era (or not), you should not miss this on your visit to Birmingham. The museum is located in the Civil Rights District- across the street from the infamous 16th Street Baptist Church. It is very insightful and informative.

“Excellent informative attraction”

A must see museum. Very well presented and we learned a lot. Definitely interesting for international visitors too. The exhibits were visually interesting enough to keep our one and three year old slightly interested so we could read some of the information but definitely would have been better without them!

The Civil Rights Institute is an eye opener and a learning experience even for those of us who were alive at the time. From the powerful to the poignant, memories and emotions are touched by the well presented exhibits and photographs. Highly recommended for all ages. Don't miss it!

Very informative not only for the younger generation but also the older generation. It evokes memories and feelings for those of us who lived through that era. The exhibit is well done.

Very inspiring and appropriately signed for maximum inspiration. Also, very well located just across the street from the beautifully preserved 16th Street Baptist Church.
