Owner description: This historic museum traces the journey of the civil rights advocates of the 1950s and 60s, who changed the course of American history. The struggle for equality for Black Americans is chronicled here, from the Jim Crow laws in the 1800s to the freedom rides, sit-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s.

“Fascinating, and very moving”
Reviewed December 23, 2011

A well organised, friendly and well-run museum. Take some time to look at the sculptures in the park opposite and then put aside a couple of hours for the museum itself. Excellent introductory film, and very well-presented exhibits. Make the detour!

“Excellent”
Reviewed December 19, 2011

The facility is very clean and attractive. The personnel are very informative and courteous. There is free admission on Sundays making this a value, however, you will want to make a donation because it is really good. Excellent for families, first dates, history buffs, and anyone interested in a better society.

“The Civil Rights Institute is a Must-See”
Reviewed December 7, 2011

Anyone traveling through the Deep South and wanting an in-depth history and view of what life was like during the days of segregation, and the fight to end it, MUST visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The tour is excellent, and you can go as deep into each segment of history as you choose. There are many special programs and focused tours to choose from, but they are not offered every day, so you need to plan ahead. Rare footage of life in the "Jim Crowe" South, photos and first-hand accounts of "Separate But Equal" and the often upsetting and occasionally scary battle for equality in the 1960s, 70s and 80s make this a truly special museum.
