Owner description: This historic museum traces the journey of the civil rights advocates of the 1950s and 60s, who changed the course of American history. The struggle for equality for Black Americans is chronicled here, from the Jim Crow laws in the 1800s to the freedom rides, sit-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s.

“What a wonderful learning experience”
Reviewed October 10, 2011

Who says America don't have culture?? The Civil Rights Institute is a wonderful place to take your children and show them that America is home of the brave and we can come together for common good! Nicely set up and easy to follow along with the children. It is truly a history book that comes to life.

“Outstanding - I highly recommend!”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

What a well done museum it is self paced after the movie but it may be a little boring for small children as there is a ton of reading. An incredible bargain! Be sure to walk to Mrs. B's for some real soul food - it is only 1 block away and so good!

“Must see!”
Reviewed September 7, 2011

Don't miss this one! You must come the the BCRI if you are in the area, what a sad history lesson. It is sad but moving and your children should see it too. It is not in a great area of town but there is parking on the premises so just go during daylight hours and you'll be fine.

“Great for entire family”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

Very informative and moving. Staff was excellent. My young kids 8, 6, 5 were focused and could follow along well because of the way the museum flowed. It isn't really meant for kids that young but with parents' guidance it can be a memorable experience for everyone.
